9 Public commentary on familiar themes The ‘herd instinct’ versus the individual Throughout this book, contemporary evidence has been the key to unlocking the emotions of the past – both private and public. Although some excerpts have appeared from the numerous books and memoirs generated by the war (and largely written after the event), comparatively little evidence has been cited from the wider contemporary sphere, the exception being the case of the Cambridge Magazine’s vocal support of Bertrand Russell as part of its balanced and humane view of the wider conflict. Now it is perhaps appropriate that some attention is drawn to contemporary newspapers and periodicals – jour- nalistic reactions fully exposed to public scrutiny and in contrast to the en- closed world of intimate diaries and letters. In summing up one of the main themes of humanistic and aesthetic opposi- tion to the Great War – the friction that existed between the structure of the war-state with its resultant ‘herd instinct’ and notions of the sacredness of the individual – there is perhaps no more apposite personal example than that of Gilbert Cannan, an individual who, like Bertrand Russell, specifically projected his concerns into the public sphere. Cannan was a friend of D.H. Lawrence (who, together with his wife, had moved to Buckinghamshire in August 1914 to be near Cannan and his wife Mary), and he saw himself as a defender of that which he described as ‘a man’s most precious possession’ – human dignity. Mencken and Van Wyck Brooks vociferously expounded a deep and profound disenchantment with American art and culture. At a time when American popular entertainments were expanding exponentially, and at a time when European high modernism was in full flower, American culture appeared to these critics to be at best a quagmire of philistinism and at worst an oxymoron. Today there is still general agreement that American arts “came of age” or “arrived” in the 1920s, thanks in part to this flogging criticism, but also because of the powerful influence of European modernism. Yet, this assessment was not, at the time, unanimous, and its conclusions should not, I argue, be taken as foregone. In this dissertation, I present crucial case studies of Constance Rourke (1885-1941) and Gilbert Seldes (1893-1970), two astute but understudied cultural critics who saw the same popular culture denigrated by Brooks or Mencken as vibrant evidence of exactly the modern American culture they were seeking. In their writings of the 1920s and 1930s, Rourke and Seldes argued that our “lively arts” (Seldes’ formulation) of performance—vaudeville, minstrelsy, burlesque, jazz, radio, and film—contained both the roots of our own unique culture as well as the seeds of a burgeoning modernism. -

This pregnant moment in time was the result ofdecades of ferment, indeed more than 100 years of growing agitation to curb the excesses of American capitalism, beginning with Jefferson's warnings about the deleterious effects ofurbanized culture, and proceeding through the painful dislocation ofthe emerging industrial economy, the ex- cesses ofspeculation during the Civil War, the rise ofthe robber barons, the suppression oflabor unions, the exploitation of immigrant labor, through to the exposes ofthe muckrakers. By the decade ofthe ' teens, the evils ofcapitalism were widely acknowledged, even by champions ofthe system. Socialism became capitalism's logical alternative and the rallying point for the disenchanted. It was, of course, merely a vision, largely untested. But that is exactly why the socialist movement was so formidable. The artists and writers of the Masses didn't need to defend socialism when Rockefeller's henchmen were gunning down mine workers and their families in Ludlow, Colorado. Eventually, the American socialist movement would shatter on the rocks ofthe Russian revolution, when it was finally confronted with the reality ofa socialist state, but that story comes later, after the Masses was run from the stage. -

Gilbert Cannan (1884–1955) Mary Cannan (1868–1950) Artists who visited: Mark Gertler, Dora Carrington The Windmill, Rays Hill, Cholesbury HP5 2UJ The artists Cannan was a novelist and dramatist. He married Mary (a former actress) in 1910 after she was divorced from her previous husband, the author J.M. Barrie, because of her affair with Cannan. The Cannans moved in an artistic and intellectual circle and many of their writer and artist friends came to stay at the windmill or rented homes in the nearby villages. These included Mark Gertler, Dora Carrington, Lytton Strachey, D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Compton Mackenzie and John Drinkwater. Gilbert Cannan produced a lot of work during his time at the windmill and some of the other visitors referred to either the countryside or people they had met there in some of their work. Mark Gertler painted several paintings during his many visits, one of which, The Merry-Go- Round, is probably his most famous work while another is his painting of the windmill itself, called Gilbert Cannan and his Mill. The house The Grade II windmill is located down a track off Rays Hill, Cholesbury, a small hilltop village approximately 6 km north-west of Chesham and 5km south of Tring in the Chiltern Hills (AONB). There have been windmills on the site since the 17th century, but the current building was constructed in 1883 and an attached grain store was later added. The miller lived in the adjacent mill house until the mill ceased operation in 1912. The property was occupied by the Cannans from 1913 to 1916. -

Koteliansky, St. John Hutchinson, Monty Shearman and Dr. Andrew Morland of Mundesley Sanatorium in Norfolk. Those considering this list may think it relates to the life of Lawrence; in fact all were known to Mark Gertler as well and what follows demonstrates how they impacted on them in different ways. I am going to start with a short biography of Gertler (for which I am in part indebted to the excellent Camden Arts Centre catalogue), followed by some pictures illustrating the very different styles he adopted. I am then going to look at the similarities between Lawrence and Gertler as well as the differences. I will examine the occasions when their lives crossed. I will conclude with Lawrence’s use of Gertler and his pictures in Lawrence’s own work. Outline biography Mark Gertler was born in 1891 of poor Polish immigrant parents and grew up in a densely populated Jewish area of east London. At the age of 15 he started art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic, paying his fees by working at a nearby stained glass works, a style later reflected in his art. Between 1908 and 1912 the Jewish Educational Aid Society helped finance his training at the Slade School of Fine Art. After initial 2 loneliness he became accepted through his skills both as artist and mimic. Christopher Nevinson became an intimate friend and introduced him to new student, Dora Carrington. -

NEWSLETTER No. 5 2001/2002 Chairman’s Introduction It has been a busy and successful year for the Local History Group. In addition to interesting speakers on local subjects ranging from film and television locations to the navvies who built the London to Birmingham Railway, there were two very enjoyable and sociable members’ evenings. In February we learnt about the history of the Cabinet Office from Caroline Coates and about Railway Time from Chris Brown; and in May Betty Gomm presented historical slides from the Group’s collection in conjunction with a display of material from the Black Box archive. Although our attendances were slightly down on the previous year, averaging some 37, we can but sympathise with those members, past and present, who were unable to attend the season’s meetings. Reports appear elsewhere in the Newsletter about last September’s Millennium Event and this year’s summer outing to the Dacorum Historical Trust’s collection at Berkhamsted. Members will wish me to thank George Cobby and Shirley Blomfield in particular for the efforts they put into arranging all of these events. As the Newsletter reaches its fifth edition it is pleasing to note that more contributions are forthcoming. Nevertheless I am sure that many other members have knowledge of local topics about which the Newsletter’s readers would like to hear and I urge you to commit them to paper for future publication. The programme for 2001/2002 promises to be as enjoyable as last season’s and your committee looks forward to seeing you all again in October. -

4 Writers at war Bertrand Russell was just one man largely thinking and acting alone – and therein rests his reputation. But to what extent – whether in private or public – did similar anti-war concerns to those of Russell and the Bloomsbury circle express themselves among the intelligentsia? The bulk of the evidence derives from the letters that sped back and forth between contemporary writers, artists and thinkers, during a time of unexpected conflict – a conflict that provoked much doubt and debate. In common with Bertrand Russell, E.M. Forster believed the war to be partly due to misdirected destructive energies; forces that could be channelled during times of peace into creative efforts. In a letter to Siegfried Sassoon written as the conflict neared its end, Forster confirmed that ‘all vigour these days is mis- directed’ and that the human race needed time and the opportunity to re-align itself.1 What of further evidence of similarities of response amongst the wider literary intelligentsia who, though they did not take part in the actual fighting (see Chapter 5), could, as with Bloomsbury and Russell, regard the conflict from a particular aesthetic or humanistic standpoint? In his letter to Sassoon, E.M. Forster also explained that his other hope for the future, though ‘very faint’, was for a League of Nations. This was a hope Forster shared both with his frequent correspondent Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson and with other intellectuals such as the writer and ruralist Edward Carpenter, who wrote publicly on the war throughout its duration. Carpenter’s standpoint was derived from his background of mysticism rather than the sta- tistical analysis of Leonard Woolf, for example, who worked slowly on aca- demic reports for the Fabians during 1915 and 1916.2 Carpenter rushed out books, articles, letters and pamphlets on the war and also found time to pro- duce an autobiography. -

1 D. H. Lawrence, Rananim and Gilbert Cannan’s Windmills Abstract: Biographers and critics of D. H. Lawrence have long recognized the significance of his various schemes to establish small utopian communities in locations such as Florida, the Andes, Palestine, Connecticut, and New Mexico. Recent accounts have, however, sought to distinguish the so-called ‘Rananim’ fantasy which Lawrence created with his wife and a select group of friends over Christmas and New Year 1914–1915 from his later schemes for communitarian living. This essay offers a detailed and revisionary reassessment of the contexts of the Rananim fantasy, drawing on little-known evidence and a previously overlooked textual source to suggest that the largely forgotten playwright, author and critic Gilbert Cannan shared Lawrence’s anti-war views in this period and actively participated in the formulation of Rananim and the associated plan to inhabit an island in the South Seas. D. H. Lawrence’s frequently expressed desire to establish a small community of friends and like-minded individuals in a far-off place away from the civilized world has attracted a good deal of attention in studies of the author’s life and writing. Biographers and critics have generally viewed his different plans as part of a single, evolving project which they call ‘Rananim’, using the term which Lawrence coined over Christmas 1914 and New Year 1915 to describe an imaginary ‘Order’ that he declared he would found with a few of his closest friends.1 The ‘Rananim’ project which commentators have sought to discover in his letters and works has been variously described as ‘Lawrence’s utopia’ and ‘the ideal community … which Lawrence hoped to establish’.2 More recently, however, John Turner and John Worthen have argued that Rananim should be treated separately from Lawrence’s later, and more viable, schemes for 2 communitarian living.
