Indigenous elites during this new colonial period faced the disappearance of their ancestral knowledge, along with the imposition of Christianity and Spanish rule. Through appropriations of linear writing and collaborative intellectual projects, the native population, in particular the noble elite sought to understand their past, interpret their present, and shape their future. Nahua traditions emphasized balanced living. Yet how one could live out that balance in unknown times ahead became a topic of ongoing discussion in Nahua intellectual communities, and a question that resounds in the texts they produced. Writing at the intersections of Nahua studies, literary and cultural history, and critical theory, in this dissertation I investigate how indigenous intellectuals in Mexico-Tenochtitlan envisioned their future as part of their re-evaluations of the past.

After an extensive literature search I determined that therewas little or no information concerning the use of the sweatlodgeby women.The goal of the research was an attempt to fillthe gap concerning womens' usage of the sweatlodgeand the reason for the continuation of the sweatlodge traditionwhen so many other traditions had become lost.To fulfill this goal I chose to work with women from the NezPerce reservation at Lapwai, Idaho. The women of the Nez Perceuse the sweatlodge to cleanse the body and to achieve socialharmony in their daily lives. It is aforum for releasing tensions,an opportunity of marriage counseling, anda method of communing with the spiritworid.In spite of the fact that my women consultants denied any religious niotivations,it appears that the sweatlodge is in fact a religious activity. By participating in the sweatlodge the spiritualtraditions are being kept alive. Sullivan TRANSLATOR'S NOTE The Crónica Mexicayotl, written in 1609 by Fernando Alvarado Tezozomoc, a grandson of Moctezuma on his mother's side and a great grandson of Axayacati on his father's, is one of the great documents of Nahuatl lore. His account of the emergence of the Aztecs from Aztlan-Chicomortoc, their peregrinations and the vicissitudes of their fortune while being driven on by their god, Hnizilopochtli, until they finally reached Tenochtitlan is not only a mine of mythico-historical data but also a saga of true literary merit and heroic dimensions. In the translation I am offering here, which as far as I know is the first in English, I have selected and threaded together only those texts which, in my opinion, narrate the events that directly led the Aztecs to the finding of their promised land. I have not, in any way, altered the sequence of events as they appear in the text. A Spanish translation of the Crónica Mexicayotl by Adrián León was published by the UNAM in 1949. In the opinion of A. M. The ten entries on this list are ranked according to the number of deaths. While some of the events spanned just a few years, others occurred over centuries. Since these death toll estimates are always highly disputed, I have made it a rule to use the highest respectable estimate in every case. I have also chosen to focus this list on ‘man-made’ events – natural disasters have not been included. 10 Atlantic Slave Trade DeathD Toll Estimate: 15 Million The Atlantic (or Trans-Atlantic) slave trade began roughly in the 16th century, reaching its peak in the 17th century until finally being all but abolished in the 19th Century. The main driving force behind this trade was the need for European empires to establish themselves in the New World. European and American settlers therefore began to use mainly West African slaves to fill the vast labor needs on plantations. Estimates vary on the amount of slaves who died, but it is said that for every ten slaves taken on a ship, fourf would perish from causes related to mistreatment. 9 Late Yuan Warfare & Transition to Ming Dynasty DeathD Toll Estimate: 30 Million The Yuan dynasty was founded by Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, around 1260.     FRIENDSHIP HOUSE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN INDIANS, INC., OF SAN FRANCISCO RESIDENTIAL SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT – RECOVERY SERVICES SERVING THE COUNTIES OF SAN FRANCISCO, SANTA CLARA AND ALAMEDA INDIAN HEALTH SERVICES QUARTERLY REPORT REPORTING PERIOD: FEBRUARY 1, 2017 – APRIL 30, 2017 Friendship House Highlights A total of 37 IHS clients (21 male, 15 female, 1 transgender MTF) received alcohol and substance abuse treatment services at the Friendship House during this third quarter. This includes 17 clients (10 male and 7 female) who were admitted throughout this reporting period. Cumulatively for FY 2016-2017, a total of 63 have received alcohol and substance abuse treatment services. Of these 63 clients, 13 clients rolled over from the previous fiscal year and 50 new clients have been admitted. A total of the 18 clients were discharged this quarter. Of those clients: ● Six clients completed Primary Residential Treatment (PRT), Level 2, and transitioned to Extended Residential Treatment (ERT), Level 1. ● Three clients graduated from PRT, Level 2, and transitioned out to a Sobel Living Environment or returned to their homes. ● Seven clients walked-out of the program (two clients in PRT, Level 1, and 5 clients in PRT, Level 2) ● Two clients in PRT, Level 1, were terminated due to non-compliance of the program’s policy. It is also a gendered act as well. Thus, ceremony is one avenue to seek both legal and gendered transformations. The transformational processes this thesis contemplates are the protocols (or rules of procedure) involved in Cree sweat lodge (matotisân) and pipe (ospwakân) ceremonies. Some of these protocols are gendered in nature, in that they set out different actions based upon sex or gender. Looking at gender is a necessary part of our continuing work with Indigenous legal orders. Further, engaging in ceremony as legal practice offers one avenue in addressing the potentials for inequality that gendered protocols bring about.
