Perinton Recreation & Parks • 223-5050 • www.perinton.org 4 Follow us on Town News Jim Spencer Retires After Four Decades He started as a high school kid mowing lawns as a seasonal worker and evolved into one of the key cogs of the Town of Perinton’s Department of Public Works. After 39 years of serving residents, Highway Supervisor Jim Spencer celebrated his retirement in June. “He’s been an invaluable part of the DPW for nearly 4 decades and the Town is a better place to live, work and play because of him,” said DPW Commissioner Jason Kennedy. “He’s a man of many talents and interests and he’s likely going to be busier in retirement than he was during his working career caring for his horses, tending his farm, hiking the ADK and AT and spending time with family and friends. He is going to be missed around here.” Jim started working seasonal part-time in the Sewer Department at 16 in 1983. In the summers of 1984 and 1985 he was an intern working as a construction inspector for the Sewer Department. In August of 1985, he was hired as a Construction Inspector, a job he would work for 8 years. In October of 1993, Jim was appointed Sewer Superintendent. Then in October of 1999, he was appointed Director of Operations, which meant he ran the Sewer Department and the Highway Department. In January of 2001, he was named Deputy Commissioner of Public Works for the Highway Department. Jim worked under 6 DPW Commissioners and 3 Town Supervisors. “Replacing his knowledge and experience is impossible,” said Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna. “Jim has been a constant in DPW for 4 decades. He has worked hard to give the residents all the services he could and the Town is indebted to his service.” Congratulations Jim and thanks for all you did! David Van Thof has been named Deputy Commissioner of the Public Works – Highway to replace Jim.

For example, the Fairport Fire Department and Perinton Ambulance have come by with demonstrations on what they do. “I have spoken with community partners, and the support for keeping this going and growing it is very strong,” Hanna said. “I am excited about the participation at all levels.” And the Sheriffs didn’t just get the conversation started and then walk away. Almost every day has featured a few officers stopping by to play dodgeball or soccer with the kids. “They have been very supportive,” Clark said. “It is great for the kids to see them get down on the grass and play with them.” According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office A Zone Captain Scott Alberti, often, when someone has interaction with law enforcement it is during a time of conflict or crisis in their life, when stress levels are high. “The goal for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is to have interactions with the kids and their families in a more positive, casual setting,” Alberti said. “From Day One we observed change. At first some of the kids were timid or shy around the deputies, but after being around them, they quickly became more comfortable.” This program gives law enforcement a chance to leave a positive impression with kids and their families, which will hopefully build trust and communication. “The success of this program will not only impact the youth, but also our deputies,” Alberti said. “I myself found it very rewarding to attend one of these sessions and play a game of dodgeball with the kids. MCSO is proud of this start With an abundance of young kids with a whole summer in front of them, up program and is grateful of the work accomplished by its community partners.” not much to do, and limited means to get to the Summer Camps offered by the Perinton Recreation & Parks Department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Fairport Central School District realized a need at the Pines of Perinton and came to the Town of Perinton to see if it could fill it. The MCSO contacted Recreation Director Jeff Nutting to discuss ways to support these children. Working collaboratively, it was decided the best way to provide was to bring a program to their own backyard. Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, Recreation Supervisor Mike Clark has brought a truckload of gear, a tent, water and several assistants to the Pines to bring recreation to the kids. The first few weeks, about 20 kids ventured up the hill for some fun. Then word caught on and the numbers have crept up to about 40 registered kids. “When we first started discussing this, it wasn’t a matter of ‘can we do it?’ It was a matter of how quickly we could put it together and how much we could do,” Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna said. “Every kid needs things to do. Every kid needs a way to have fun with friends and maybe meet some new kids. Thankfully, we have the means to make that happen for them.”

Our community is known for outstanding recreation opportunities, including an extensive network of trails. One of our most popular is the RS&E Trolley Trail, which spans about 5 miles in total from the northwest to the southeast parts of Town. Over the past few years, the Town has worked to rebuild the RS&E Trail and add parking areas. This summer, Public Works crews added three new benches along the trail. The benches were reconditioned and repurposed from the Village of Fairport, which reduced project costs. These repurposed benches are located at the trailhead parking areas near Pannell Road, Victor Road, and Hogan Road. The RS&E trail is frequently used for running, walking and biking, and offers a variety of activity options, such as skiing and snowshoeing in the Winter. The trail is also accessible to those with wheelchairs and strollers, and is ideal for all skill levels. By also utilizing the Erie Canal Path, RS&E Trail users can go from Eyer Park in East Rochester to the Village of Fairport, through the Hamlet of Egypt to Pannell Road. SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEP OUR WATER CLEAN, PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH, AND AVOID EXPENSIVE PLUMBING REPAIRS.

Pour it into a sealable container and place it in the trash. Never pour oil, pan drippings, bacon grease, lard, shortening, butter, margarine, salad dressings, mayo, creams, or sauces down the sink or toilet. If you have a lot of oil, mix it with cat litter a little bit at a time and pour it into a sealed bag and place it in the trash.

Don't flush any types of wipes down the commode, even flushable wipes. Food can cling to them and build up more quickly in wastewater pipes.

Compost food waste when possible; otherwise, throw scraps in the trash.

Wipe dishes and cookware with a paper towel to remove grease, rather than running water over them. Don't use cloth towels as the grease will end up in the sewer when you wash them.

Place a strainer in the sink drain to catch small pieces of food and eliminate your use of a garbage disposal. Food scraps of any kind can plug your home's wastewater lines.

Use environmentally safe cleaning products, such as those that have the EPA Safer Choice label, instead of harsh detergents or cleaners that can damage sewer lines.
