Imam Hussein derives his glory from of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad Peace be upon him. In fact, I do not find much trouble in a flow of ideas which follows one idea after the other about the wonderful example in steadfastness on the right. And I am thirsty for the moment when the article will be finished to start reading it again. When I started in my writing, I did not know much about the subject, but when I read the references and resources and studied the details of Imam's life, I was surprised with many meanings that added a lot to my personality. When we talk about this great person we must mention the environment in which he grew up and the family from which he descended. They are a family of the Prophet Muhammad (Ahl Albeit), , who are distinguished by good deeds, redemption and sacrifice, the reason for their preference was their commitment to the method of God and they paid precious cost to become the word of God is the highest. َ ََّ ُ ْ َ ْ ُ ْ َ ْ َ ُ َ ْ )1( )إن َما ُيريد ُالله لُيذه َب عنك ُم َّالر ْج َس أهل ال َبْيت َو ُيط َّه َرك ْم تطه ًيرا( ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ The Holy Prophet Muhammad has recommended all Muslims to love (Ahl Albeit) and keep them in mind.

The origin of my study extends beyond the moment I had to pick a research topic for completion of my doctoral dissertation in the Department of Anthropology, Indiana University. This study grapples with some questions that have occupied my mind since a young age when my parents decided to migrate from Kabul to Los Angeles because of the Soviet-Afghan War of 1980s. I undertook sections of this topic while finishing my Senior Project at UC Santa Barbara and my Master’s thesis at California State University, Fullerton. I can only hope that the questions and analysis offered here reflects my intellectual progress.

    THE MASSACRE OF KARBALA FACT SHEET What is the Massacre of Karbala? It is the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn b. ‘Ali (a.s), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w), along with his family and companions, by the army of Yazid b. Mu’awiyah. The killing took place in Karbala, Iraq on 10th October 680 C.E (Islamic date: 10th Muharram 61 A.H). This is known as the Day of ‘Ashura. The day is commemorated every year by Muslims around the world, particularly Shi’i Muslims. Why is the Massacre of Karbala important? The event represents the battle between justice and injustice and is a timely reminder for every generation to speak out against oppression and safeguard virtue. What happened in Karbala? Al-Husayn refused to give allegiance to Yazid. Yazid’s reign as caliph in Arabia had resulted in civil strife, instability, indignity and corruption. He demanded unquestioning allegiance from the people and accept him as their king. Al-Husayn, his family, relatives, and a few followers (numbering approximately 72) refused because Yazid was a tyrant manipulating the notions of good and evil. Yazid decided to force al-Husayn to accept his allegiance or be killed. In the end, al-Husayn and his small band of men, women and children (including his six month old infant son by the name of ‘Abdallah) were deprived of water for several days. The commander of the Yazid’s army abandoned the convention of one-to-one combat, surrounded al-Husayn, and ordered his vastly larger and superior army (up to 30,000 men) to kill him.

    THE BEKTASHI TARIKAH OF DERVISHES Olsi Jazexhi Algiers, 10/9/2007 The Bektashis in History The Bektashi Tarikah of Dervishes that nowadays is known as a Muslim religious community in Albania (Komuniteti Bektashian), is an Islamic Sufi order (tariqat) that embraces a considerable portion of the Muslim population of Albania. This tariqat is believed to have originated with Haji Bektash Veli (d. ca. 1290), an Islamic saint who lived in Anatolia in the second half of the 13th century. Bektashi legends maintain that Haji Bektash became the “patron saint” of the Janissaries during the reigns of Orhan or Murat I and played a leading role in the Islamization of young Christian recruits from the Balkans who had found place in the Ottoman army. Many scholars believe that Haji Bektash Veli appeared among the dervishes of Anatolia during the 13th century and was most likely a disciple of Baba Ishak, a figure who revolted against the Seljuks in the 1240s. Sami Frashëri, a notable muhib (affiliate) and scholar of Bektashism in Albania, claimed that Haji Bektash Veli was one of the lofty awliya’ (saints), and that he originated from the city of Nishabur in the Persian province of Khorasan. Haji Bektash Veli received his knowledge from Luqman Parandah and later journeyed to Anatolia. During his lifetime the saint is said to have met Sultan Orhan (ruled from 1326-1359 CE) and even blessed the newly-formed Janissary Corps, although such late dates are problematic.
