ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Mission Study Team is pleased to present our analysis and summary report of the 2017 mission study process at First Pres. Team members were selected in November of 2016, and have met weekly to discuss and document assignment results since January 2017. We are grateful for God’s presence, leading, and encouragement throughout the process! This report is more than the product of our prayers, research, interviews, listening, reflection, and discernment. This was a collaborative church effort, involving hundreds of congregants, the Session, staff, and Presbytery as well as the MST. We thank everyone who contributed time, ideas, and expertise. Interim Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Steve Schibsted met with the MST for several weeks as we assessed the spiritual health of our church and opportunities for leadership. The First Pres staff graciously spent hours sharing details about their current programs, goals for ministry, and help with fact checking. The Session and Presbytery provided leadership and guidance as we gathered and organized data about our church life, management p1ractices, and membership. Hundreds of congregants shared their time, personal information, experiences at church, hopes, and suggestions for strengthening First Pres through emails, surveys, conversation groups, stories, and photos. The MST is grateful to each of you for your contributions, prayers, and support in helping us give life to this Mission Study Report! Writing this document has blessed us with the surety of God’s love and leading for First Pres. God’s hand is on us as we go deeper in faith and reliance on him during this interim period. May it culminate in a season of renewal that will unify our church in knowledge of the Word, love for our neighbors, and service to the world, for the glory of our Lord, Jesus Christ. First Pres incorporated on March 31, 1878, one day before incorporation of the city of Berkeley. While there is a vibrant story to be told about our last 100+ years in this city, the focus of this Mission Study Report is concerned with the p1ast 10 2007 years—from 2007 to 2017. 2007 was the inaugural year of our Global Church Conference, with Steve Jobs launches iPhone the theme “Jesus and Evangelical Power: the Gift and the Problem.” 2007 was also the year the iPhone was first introduced to the public. Dr. Mark Labberton raised up a banner for the centrality of Christ. He shared: "Our history enables us to live from the past not in the past . The primary reason for this, in my view, is the simple, living centrality of Jesus Christ. Since our Lord is always our contemporary, we can look to the past and celebrate God's faithfulness, knowing that we are called to discover that afresh today . This allows us to honor and learn from the 2008 past without being captive to it. We serve the risen Christ who is Lord today." President Barack Obama is elected This preaching message for the centrality of Christ continued from 2008–09 with Mark’s teaching, and newly published book, The Dangerous Act of Worship. In the midst of one of the most significant economic recessions in American history, our congregation remained committed to looking outward, seeking God’s will in the world. Sunday attendance 2009 experienced a 10-year high and many sermons reminded us of unexpected grace in the daily Newsweek prints cover story rhythms of our lives. When Mark was called to Fuller Seminary as the new Lloyd John Ogilvie “Decline and Fall of Associate Professor of Preaching, we celebrated him with a sermon series titled: “Jesus Christian America” Christ the Same: Yesterday, Today and Forever.” It affirmed how we saw God at work in the world even in a period of uncertainty, and a reaffirmation that the same God continues to call Natural disasters hit Indonesia, us to good work on this strategic corner.
