The first sentence in the Club’s inaugural annual maga- zine reads as follows…“Your Club was organized in the fall of 1936 with about one hundred members and during the winter increased to about one hundred fifty.” View of Sun Valley Lodge from the top of Dollar Mountain. Source: 1936 SVSC Annual Magazine” “The Sun Valley Ski Club” it has remained as we celebrate our 75th anniversary year in 2011. The club has expanded and contracted over time, but throughout it all, it has remained a vibrant, viable, healthy organization, being ever true to the mission statement in the opening paragraph in its constitu- tion which reads: “To encourage proficiency and enjoyment Mrs. W. My thoughts went back to the 2001 Nationals and the 2005 World Criterium with much sweat, toil, and tears. However, like a Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland movie, Bob’s words can be infectious. Before I could yell “Stop the presses!,” the Sun Valley Ski Club was signed, sealed, and delivered for the 2010 Skier’s Edge Masters Nationals. As it turned out, I shouldn’t have feared because the 2010 version of the USSA Masters Nationals turned out to be one of the most well organized and fun projects the Ski Cub has ever put on. With people like Drury Cooper, Frank Ward, Gene Timmons, Gretchen Palmer, Bob and Lynne Nicholson, Nick Maricich and his troop of ski instructors, Michel Rudigoz, Mike Wrobel and the Sun Valley race department, the Sun Valley catering department, and a whole boat load of Ski Club volunteers, the Nationals worked like a well- oiled machine. Monday, the first day of competition, started off with a weather challenge: lots of heavy wet snow. Through a herculean effort, the first leg of the Super Combined, the Slalom was completed. The next day the weather wasn’t much better. Conditions were too dangerous to run the scheduled Super G, so like all good racers, we went powder skiing. On Wednesday, the weather cleared, and we were literally off to the races. Over 200 racers sped down the Super G course on Warm Springs. For the next two days, groups swapped Slalom and GS runs in near perfect conditions. 4 svsc 2010-11 ski annual Let’s Put on A Show Our awards parties were held in the elegant Limelight Room at the Sun Valley Resort. We started our evening festivities on Monday with a lavish welcome party. The competitors were welcomed by the mayor of Sun Valley, Wayne Willich. Then Olympic alpine commentator, Tim Ryan, took over the podium. To say that he lit up the room with his personal comments on the Vancouver Olympics would be an understatement. The highlight of the week’s party scene, however, was the appearance of the “Fuxi Girls.” Directly from Broadway, or was it Salzburg, these four scantily clad dancers brought down the house. Champions from Sun Valley included: Robin Sarchett 5 Gold medals; Nate Swing 4 Gold; Matt Murphy 4 Gold and 1 Silver; Carl Rixon Jr. 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze; Jean Rudigoz 1 Bronze; John Campbell 4 Silver and 1 Bronze; Bob Dreyer 2 Bronze; Ed Fenwick 2 Gold; Bob Sarchett 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze; Jim Tallackson 1 Silver and 1 PHOTOGRAPHY: HEATHER BLACK Bronze; Drury Cooper 4 Silver; John Droege 4 Gold; Virginia Reed 1 Gold and 3 Silver; Anna Droege 5 Gold; Nancy Auseklis 5 Gold; Nancy Dreyer 2 Silver and 2 Bronze; Heidi Flood 1 Bronze; and Ericka Hogan 5 Gold. Congratulations to all of the Sun Valley medal winners and congratulations to everyone that participated. You are all winners! The 2010 National Masters Championship in Sun Valley was by all accounts the best ever.
