Media Kit Oriental PONTIFICAL ORIENTAL INSTITUTE MEDIA KIT Established 1917 The pontifical institute was established in 1917 by Pope Benedict XV. The Jesuits 1922 Pope Pius XI entrusted the Institute to the Society of Jesus. Rerum Orientalium 1928 Bishops were encouraged to send students to the Institute to be formed as future professors in Oriental studies. Post grad 350 students In a typical year, the Oriental Institute has between 300 and 400 students, both lay and religious, from more than 40 countries. It attracts students not only from the Eastern Churches, but also from the Roman From Catholic and Protestant Churches, as well as non Christians. 48 countries The Pontifical Oriental Institute or “Orientale” is the premier center for the study of Eastern Christianity in Rome, Italy. The pontifical institute was established in 1917 by Pope Benedict XV. Pope Pius XI entrusted the Institute to the Society of Jesus in 1922, and with the 1928 encyclical “Rerum Orienta- lium” encouraged bishops to send students to the Institute to be formed as future professors in Oriental studies. In that same year, Pius XI associated the Institute with the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute, thus forming the Gregorian Consortium. In 1971, the Faculty of Oriental Canon Law was erected alongside the already existing Faculty of Oriental Eccle- siastical Studies. The Faculty of Oriental Canon Law had a crucial role in the produc- tion of Code of Canon Law for the Oriental Churches. The Institute has been located across from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore since 1926. It is separated from the Collegium Russicum by the Church of Saint Antony. According to article 16 of the Lateran Treaty, signed in 1929 between Italy and the Holy See, the property of the Oriental Institute enjoys a certain level of extraterritoriality, with the Holy See having all rights over the infrastructure without interference from the Italian State, and free from all Italian taxation. Since 1993, the Grand Chancellor of the Oriental Institute has been the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, in 2016 it was Cardinal Leonardo Sandri (left), while the Rector was Fr. Nowhere else in the world can one find together in the same library nearly everything an orientalist scholar could need to research any aspect of Eastern Christendom. The collection of liturgical books on Eastern Christian traditions Unique to the general collection is its rich selection of the official liturgical books, Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic, in the main Eastern Christian liturgical languages (Greek, Slavonic, Romanian, Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Coptic, Ge‘ez (Ethiopic), Malayalam, as well as in translations of the modern vernacular tongues into which many of the Eastern rites are gradually moving.This collection has been instrumental in facilitating the institute’s scholarly work and more discretely their work for the Holy See as consultors of the Vatican Congregation for the Oriental Churches. The East European Collection (Russian, Ukrainian) Prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Library was regularly visited by Soviet and other East-Bloc scholars to read the Russian, Ukrainian, and other Slavic and Slavonic sources that were difficult to access under the Communist regime. Especially rich are the PIO Library holdings on the two most important lands of Slavic Eastern Christianity, Ukraine and Russia, the historic “Kievan Rus’,” heartland and cradle of Slavia Orthodoxa. Current Periodicals 2,600 periodicals including 500 current ones still being pub- lished—represent a rich collection of scholarly journals from every corner of the world and every Eastern Church. These current periodicals are an essential tool for maintaining knowledge of the current situation of those Churches and their present life, with its problems and interests. Taft, S.J., born in Providence, RI (USA) Jan. 9, 1932, entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1949. After receiving the MA and Licentiate in Philosophy, he taught from 1956-59 at Baghdad College, Baghdad, Iraq, followed by an MA in Russian Studies at Fordham University in NY (1961), and an MA and STL in theology in 1964. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Byzantine Slavonic (Russian) Rite in 1963. He is Professor- emeritus of Oriental Liturgy at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome, and founder and editor-in-chief of its Anaphorae Orientales series. He studied there his doctorate (1965-70), then did postdoctoral studies in Oriental Philology at the University of Louvain (1971-72). The bibliography of his publications and writings comprises over 800 titles written in English, French, and Italian, mostly scholarly publications on Eastern Liturgy, including 23 books, three of them co-authored. His writings have been translated into eighteen different languages. Fr. Taft is also Consultor for Liturgy of the Vatican Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and a member of several Vatican commissions and other editorial and advisory boards. Fr. What has induced those responsible to follow the suggestions of the Modernist Tyrrell to the effect that they believed that what the Church needed was “a liberal infusion of Protestant ideas?” Why has the “fort” been abandoned “by those even of whom it should be guarded?” Either those responsible had a defective faith, or they were not even Christian! For all their “sincerity” and “good will”, they, like the Protestant Reformers of an earlier age, could not abide and accept Holy Mother Church as she had always been. It was perfectly obvious to those brought up in the traditional Church that her mind and thinking was diametrically opposed to that of so-called “contemporary man”.

    The Holy See MESSAGE OF THE HOLY FATHER TO MARK THE CENTENARY OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE PONTIFICAL ORIENTAL INSTITUTE AND THE CONGREGATION FOR ORIENTAL CHURCHES To Venerable Brother Cardinal Leonardo Sandri Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Oriental Institute On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, several months after the centenary of the establishment of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches (cf. Benedict xv, Motu Proprio Dei Providentis, 1 May 1917), it is my pleasure to address a cordial greeting to you, venerable Brother, and to the entire Academic Community. Almost half a century before the Conciliar Decree Orientalium Ecclesiarum, my venerable Predecessor wished to draw attention to the extraordinary richness of the Eastern Churches, by founding the Pontifical Oriental Institute here in Rome, on 15 October 1917. Even in the midst of the turbulence of the first world conflict, the Pontiff understood the need to pay special attention to the Eastern Churches. For its foundation, Benedict xv recalled that openness to the Orient that had blossomed with the Eucharistic Congress of Jerusalem of 1893, with the aim of creating a study centre which would serve — as affirmed in the founding document — as “an ideal setting for the advanced study of Oriental issues”, destined to train “also Latin priests who wish to exercise their sacred ministry among Orientals”. From the outset, it was intended that this “study centre [be] open to Orientals, both the affiliated and the so-called Orthodox”, so that “the exposure of Catholic and, at the same time, Orthodox doctrine could proceed simultaneously” (Benedict xv, Motu Proprio Orientis Catholici, 15 October 1917: aas 9 [1917], 532).

Three case studies illus- trate the topos of dialogue as a strategy of struggle: 1. the campaign against ‘revisionism’ and ‘politicised religion’; 2. the church policy strategy of ‘differentiation’; 3. the critique of the phenomena commonly associated with the Christian–Marxist dialogue outside East Germany in the mid-1960s. These instances of socialist religious politics, while having their own dynamics, were closely related through specific actors and argumentative strategies. In 1990, one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, long-time editor of the Journal of Ecumenical Studies (JES), Leonard Swidler, took stock of the history of the Christian–Marxist dialogue as a long tradition with renewed political relevance.     L'Église catholique en Russie de 1917 à nos jours Jean-François Bourret Professeur émérite à l'université Lumière-Lyon II Dès les lendemains de la révolution de 1917, l'Église catholique, dont les efforts de négociation avec le nouveau gouvernement restèrent vains, réagit par des consécrations secrètes d'évêques. Au cours des années vingt et trente, elle fut combattue au même titre que les autres confessions chrétiennes et l'étau se resserra pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, particulièrement pour les citoyens soviétiques de langue allemande. Dès les années soixante, on constata, malgré d'incessantes vexations, une renaissance des communautés chrétiennes occidentales. La chute du régime communiste, si elle a permis un renouveau de toutes les confessions chrétiennes, a aussi réveillé les très anciens griefs de l'Église orthodoxe vis-à-vis de Rome. Le diocèse de Tiraspol perdit la Bessarabie cédée à la Roumanie. Amputé lui aussi dans sa partie occidentale, l'archevêché de Moghilev restait au début des années vingt le plus vaste diocèse du monde.

Th is era can be seen as a turning point in the history of clashes over religion, which now reached levels that recalled the culture war (‘Kulturkampf’) of the nineteenth century – but also involved unparalleled violence and unprecedented transnational scope. Th is essay paints a panorama of the various European responses to the brutal Soviet policy against religion, and the evolution of militant atheism in Europe, from the onset of the collectivisation of agriculture in the USSR in 1929 until the encyclical letter Divini Redemptoris (1937), in which Pope Pius XI condemned communism as ‘intrinsically wrong’.
