We wish a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Witney who have made the journey for this fixture and wish them a safe journey home back to Oxfordshire.

Senior Section Tonight is a vital game for both sides at the wrong end of the table and a must win game for both First Team – TBA teams. Witney will be on a high from their excellent 4-1 away win at rejuvenated Fairford Town on Saturday. With Fairford having won at Oxford City in midweek I had this one down as a home First Team Tracksuits & T-shirts – C.S. Building Services win. Although Fairford have struggled at the foot of the table all season, they remained a tough and Macmillan Cancer Support nut to crack on their home ground and this was an impressive win by Witney. We are certainly under no illusions that this will be a tough game tonight. We have now lost five games in a row Reserves – Ganges Indian Cuisine following the defeat against Slimbridge and have not won in our last nine games. The defeat on Under 18 Floodlit – Quickmovenow.com Saturday was harsh and how different had the result have been if the stonewall penalty had been awarded and Slimbridge reduced to ten men just prior to them taking the lead. It seems everyone Ladies – Aftech Sheet metal & fabrications and in the ground saw the incident except the men in black. Decisions like these (the first Slimbridge bristol batteries goal also looked offside) decide games and whilst the saying goes that these type of things even themselves out over season it does at times feel like we are always on the wrong end of them. Binfield, Ardley, Highworth Town and the other sides chasing the title also suffered from these decisions on Saturday.

YOUTH SECTION Despite the disappointment of Saturday all concentration now needs to be on achieving three vital Under 18 – Aftech Limited points here tonight. Hopefully the side will be strengthened tonight by the return of John Beeden Under 16 Girls - SciMAT Ltd and also see the return from suspension of Liam Edmondson. The game tonight is just as big as some of those at the end of last season when we were chasing promotion. Having witnessed the Under 16 - K & M Developments, C.S. Building Services, game on Saturday I am also hoping we have had a little bit of rain to soften the pitch up as it was very difficult for the players to get the ball under control with the hard and rutted surface. Both A.T. Kitchin Homes sides were almost forced to engage in a long ball game given the way the ball was bouncing all Under 15 - GSL UK Limited over the place when both sides tried to play football on the ground. Despite the bad run of results of late there have been a few positives to take heart from. The performances of youngsters Adam Under 14 Girls - TBA Topping and George Drewitt bode well for the future. The signing of Tom Dingle has been a Under 14A – The Barber Shop, good one, a very clever player with a high work rate, typified by his cracking goal against PAS Construction, CCTV Nationwide, Slimbridge on Saturday. Surehome Construction, Wason & Webb Manager Dave Turner looks back over recent games in his From The Dugout column later in the programme. Looking at what else is in tonights programme, the From the Archives feature this Under 14B – TBA week goes way back to 1962-63 and the worst winter in British history that sees the FA Cup final Under 12 – C.S. Building Services put back, Sunday football introduced and some teams having the whole of January and February off. Wootton Bassett Town also struggled at the wrong end of the table following the departures Under 11 – Total Value Consultancy, I.C.C. Car & of Mickey Jefferies and Lou Nash. There is the usual updated league table for the Fantasy Commercial Vehicle Body Repairs, Football League which sees a new leader in Simon Jones. The Youth Section page includes a round-up from young Luke Walduck from games played on Sunday 27th March and the results Babcock Homesafe everyday from games played on 3rd April. Scoop provides a match report from the narrow defeat against Slimbridge. There is also again the caption competition with a case of Peroni to the winner. All Under 10A - Quattro Group, High Motive you need to do is come up with a witty caption to go with the photo from the game at Reading Under 10B - WGS Power & Lighting Ltd, High Motive Town and the best one as judged by myself wins the case of beer (please note competition is only open to over 18s). Closing date for entrants is 9th April and I have already received some entries. Under 9 - S.D.C. South Marston Looking at what is coming up at Rylands Way, Thursday night sees the Under 18 Floodlit side Under 8 - TBA play Amesbury where a win will edge us closer towards the league title after the excellent 8-4 Training Equipment – Don Rogers Sports win over Bradford Town last week. Saturday sees the Reserves entertain Cirencester Town before the First Team are home again to Ascot United in another key Uhlsport Hellenic League First Team Training Kit Sponsor – Milfed Premier Division fixture. Enjoy the game and cheer the lads on to three vital points. Firstly I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Witney United to Rylands Way. We hope you enjoy your short stay with us and will join us all for a drink in the bar after the game.

Tonight is arguably the most important game of the season for us. But it is equally important to Witney. I am sure it will be a nervous affair and probably a ugly game to watch. At this moment in time I think both teams would take any kind of win regardless of how well the teams play.

Although results have not gone according to plan over the last few games our performances have been good. What we have to do as a team is stop giving away soft goals. Once you go behind against the top teams it is very difficult to get back into the game.

Our last three games have been against the top three sides in the division and we made everyone of those teams work the full ninety minutes to earn their points. The Managers from both Binfield and Slimbridge both made a point of searching me in the bar after the game to say what a good little team we are. Both of them fully expect to be playing us next season and I cannot wait to play them both again.

If we can add a couple of experienced heads to go with the good youngsters we have at this club. We can move forward and become an established team at this level. First we need to do the business on the pitch before we can think about next season.

We have no injury worries as we go into the final ten games. Stewy T is almost fully fit, but we will still try to protect him for the next couple of games. The agreement we had with Supermarine was if they had no mid week games then Jon Beedon would be released back to us. So do not be too surprised if you see John back in the Yellow and Blue for a few of our remaining games. We are also hopeful that Ryan Banks will make himself available for a few of our remaining games.

Before I go I would just like to thank all the supporters who have told me to keep my head up over the last few games. Your kind words are appreciated. But I have total belief in my squad and we will all stick together and see the season out. We have a great changing room and they will all stick together for the final run in.

Slimbridge Handed a Gift

Rylands Way, 2nd April 2011

Elementary mistakes have been the downfall for Wootton Bassett Town more often than not when they have lost this season, the lack of thrashings during the course of their campaign attesting to that. And once again they played a role in their 2-1 defeat to promotion chasers Slimbridge, with both of the visitors goals being very much avoidable. 1902/03 Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up But the Swans three points were also influenced by some extremely questionable officiating, which left much 1902/03 Advertiser Cup Runners-up to be desired. The games main flashpoint came six minutes before the half time whistle when Bassett were 1903/04 Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up denied a stonewall penalty, while Slimbridge escaped not only having to face a spot kick but also playing the rest of the game at a numerical disadvantage. Expert skill from Sam Packer allowed him to fly past right back 1905/06 Wiltshire County League Runners-up Fred Ward with ease, putting the hosts in a three-on-two situation. After advancing down the wing, he slipped 1930/31 Calne & District League Runners-up a pass inside to Tom Dingle, who was under the close attention of defender Tom Speers. Dingle confidently rolled his marker ten yards from goal, but while he prepared to fire at goal, the defender went to the floor and 1931/32 Calne & District League Champions reached out to block the ball with his hands. The handball was clear to the majority of the Rylands Way crowd, 1933/34 Vale of White Horse Cup Winners yet neither the referee nor his assistant managed to spot the blatant infraction, which denied Dave Turners 1934/35 Calne & District League Champions side an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The incident came at a crucial juncture of the match. Bassett had just survived a quarter hour long Slimbridge onslaught that had seen two efforts cleared off the line. Still Calne & District League Cup Winners disgusted about the officials mistake, Bassett lost their composure and found themselves behind in the 43rd 1935/36 Calne & District League Champions minute. Controversy surrounded the goal too, with it appearing as though Ross Langworthy, who got the final touch, was offside. However, a home defence at sixes and sevens played a crucial role too. Allowing the burly Calne & District League Cup Runners-up Marvyn Roberts the freedom to latch onto a routine ball over the top left keeper Stewart Thompson exposed, 1938/39 Brotherhood Cup Winners and the home custodian was duly lobbed. Langworthy then slid in at the left upright to ensure the ball nestled 1953/54 Vale of White Horse Cup Winners in the back of the net. 1957/58 Chippenham & District League Division 2 Champions The early stages of the first half had been a tentative affair, but the visitors began to assert their dominance, 1958/59 Wiltshire League Division 1 Champions with their first clear chance coming when Ben Wood looped a header just over after a corner had only been half cleared. In the 21st minute, Langworthy had Thompson beaten after shrugging off the attentions of Mark 1978/79 Wiltshire County League Division 2 Runners-up McMeeking, but an acrobatic clearance from Shaun Carter preserved parity. Craig Bowden was next to dash Wiltshire County League Subsidiary Cup Winners the visitors hopes when he scrambled the ball away off the line from a close range Roberts effort, after 1982/83 Wiltshire County League Division 4 Runners-up Thompson could only parry a stinging Langworthy drive. The defensive heroics continued following the restart too. Rob Hine beat Thompson to Paul Carters whipped in free kick, delivering a towering header which seemed 1983/84 Wiltshire County League Ghia Senior Cup Winners destined to hit the roof of the net. But a despairing McMeeking headed clear before the loose ball was 1984/85 Wiltshire County League Division 2 Champions bundled away, Roberts once again having failed with the rebound. A fantastic goal fashioned out of nothing then made it 1-1 on 56 minutes. Bowden clipped a clearance down the right wing. Although played more out Wiltshire County League Ghia Junior Cup Runners-up of defensive necessity rather than an attempt to initiate an attack, it fell perfectly for Dingle, whose intuitive 1987/88 Wiltshire County League Division 1 Champions diagonal run allowed him to lose the attention of his marker. Then, after bringing the ball down, he blazed an Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up unstoppable drive from the right edge of the box past Dave Evans at his near post. Slimbridge appeared rocked with Wood lunging in dangerously on Matt Boucher moments after the goal was scored. It was reckless and 1988/89 Wiltshire County League Ghia Junior Cup Runners-up two-footed, but somehow he escaped with just a yellow card as punishment. Soon after, Bassett were 1989/90 Hellenic League Division 1 Cup Winners punished for lax discipline. A ball over the top split the defence, and Langworthy took full advantage, driving 1993/94 Hellenic League Division 1 Cup Winners past McMeeking before sending a firm strike from 18 yards past Thompson. Although once again rattled, Turners side did not give up the ghost and came close to an equaliser ten minutes from time when Packer 1994/95 Hellenic League Division 1 Cup Runners-up weaved his way through the Swans defence only for his touch to elude him ten yards from goal. His weak 1998/99 Wiltshire Senior Cup Winners effort was deflected by Speers and collected easily by Evans. Compounding a frustrating afternoon for Bassett was Witney Uniteds convincing win away against Fairford Town. It therefore means the Blanketboys visit to 2000/01 Wiltshire Senior Cup Winners Rylands Way on Tuesday is of huge importance. There is no better time to break a six game winless league Hellenic League Reserves Division 2 West Champions streak. 2009/10 Hellenic League Division 1 West Runners-up

Scoops Man of the Match: Tom Dingle, took his goal brilliantly and his intelligent play gave the Slimbridge defence trouble. This was most notable when his hold up play forced Slimbridge defender Tom Speers to take such drastic action and handle the ball. Unfortunately this was not punished.

Scoop Rating: 5/10, although let down by poor officiating, the two goals Bassett conceded were primarily a result of their own slack play. Danny Hale with another two, P W D L GD PTS Res Division One Old Woodstock Tn v Launton Sports Josh Morse and Joe Shepherd did the damage against 1 Wootton Bassett 13 10 1 2 29 31 Pewsey but the score would have been doubled had it Wantage Tn v Fairford Tn Res Division Two East not have been from a fantastic goalkeeping display from 2 Chippenham Town 17 8 4 5 11 28 the Pewsey goalkeeper. However the real highlight of 3 Devizes Town 13 8 1 4 16 25 Res Division Two West Chinnor v Holyport the season so far was a week last Sunday when the lads reached the showpiece U18 County Youth Cup Final 4 Bradford Town 12 7 2 3 10 23 Launton Sports v Easington Sports Henley Tn v Rayners Lane with a tremendous 6-3 victory over FC Chippenham 5 Amesbury Town 11 5 3 3 2 18 Res Division Two East Newbury v Chalfont Wasps Youth. After going behind to an early Chippenham goal the boys response was outstanding as we scored 5 goals 6 Shrewton Utd 15 6 0 9 -10 18 Rayners Lane v Chinnor Penn & Tylers Grn v Hungerford Tn Dev in 20 minutes to lead 5-1 at the break and extended this 7 Corsham Town 13 4 5 4 2 17 Thame Utd v Ascot Utd even further before Chippenham scored two very late consolation goals. Joe Shepherd who was absolutely 8 Melksham Town 12 4 3 5 -3 15 Saturday 16 April brilliant scored a hat-trick with Sam Farr, Brad Hooper and Josh Morse getting the others. 9 Bemerton HH 16 3 1 12 -37 10 Premier Division Monday 18 April 10 Pewsey Vale 14 2 2 10 -20 8 This is only the second time that Wootton Bassett has Abingdon Tn v Shortwood Utd Premier Division accomplished this, the first time being in the 2004/05 Ardley Utd v Highworth Tn Binfield v Shortwood Utd season and what perhaps makes this even more remarkable is that 10 of the 15 lads selected for the Bracknell Tn v Old Woodstock Tn Res Division Two West game are U17 players so will be eligible to play in the competition again next year which bodes well for the Flackwell Heath v Carterton Easington Sports v Old Woodstock Tn club. As stated in previous notes I represented the club Kidlington v Ascot Utd Res Division Two East at U18 level in two cup finals in the 1981 and 1982 and to be able to manage a club that I have been associated Pegasus Juniors v Thame Utd Newbury v Rayners Lane with for over 30 years in a County Cup Final without doubt is a major highlight for me and eradicates the Shrivenham v Oxford City Nom' Thame Utd v Chalfont Wasps disappointment of last years semi final defeat. For some of the lads who have been with me since I started Witney Utd v Binfield Tuesday 19 April managing Youth teams 11 years ago this also makes up Wootton Bassett Tn v Wantage Tn Premier Division for the disappointment of three previous semi final defeats at U13, U15 and U18 level and an appearance in Division One West Abingdon Tn v Wootton Bassett Tn the final will be a very fitting reward for a superb and thoroughly deserved achievement by all involved with Cheltenham Sar's v Cricklade Tn Bracknell Tn v Wantage Tn the floodlit side this year so far. Launton Sports v Headington Amat's Fairford Tn v Kidlington Aside from this we are also very well positioned at the Letcombe v Tytherington Rocks Highworth Tn v Slimbridge top of the floodlit league and with four of the last five games taking place at home it could be the best season Official Web Sites: www.hellenicleague.co.uk & www.football.mitoo.co.uk for a long while for the club and your support at these games would be very much appreciated.
