Original Research A CHECKLIST OF THE NON -A C A RINE A R A CHNIDS (CHELICER A T A : AR A CHNID A ) OF THE DE HOOP NA TURE RESERVE , WESTERN CA PE PROVINCE , SOUTH AFRIC A Authors: ABSTRACT Charles R. Haddad1 As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) in conserved areas, arachnids Ansie S. Dippenaar- were collected in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The Schoeman2 survey was carried out between 1999 and 2007, and consisted of five intensive surveys between Affiliations: two and 12 days in duration. Arachnids were sampled in five broad habitat types, namely fynbos, 1Department of Zoology & wetlands, i.e. De Hoop Vlei, Eucalyptus plantations at Potberg and Cupido’s Kraal, coastal dunes Entomology University of near Koppie Alleen and the intertidal zone at Koppie Alleen. A total of 274 species representing the Free State, five orders, 65 families and 191 determined genera were collected, of which spiders (Araneae) South Africa were the dominant taxon (252 spp., 174 genera, 53 families). Untangling Taxonomy: a DNA Barcode Reference Library for Canadian Spiders

HEBERT Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada Abstract Approximately 1460 species of spiders have been reported from Canada, 3% of the global fauna. This study provides a DNA barcode reference library for 1018 of these species based upon the analysis of more than 30 000 specimens. The sequence results show a clear barcode gap in most cases with a mean intraspecific divergence of 0.78% vs. a min- imum nearest-neighbour (NN) distance averaging 7.85%. The sequences were assigned to 1359 Barcode index num- bers (BINs) with 1344 of these BINs composed of specimens belonging to a single currently recognized species. There was a perfect correspondence between BIN membership and a known species in 795 cases, while another 197 species were assigned to two or more BINs (556 in total). A few other species (26) were involved in BIN merges or in a combination of merges and splits. There was only a weak relationship between the number of specimens analysed for a species and its BIN count. However, three species were clear outliers with their specimens being placed in 11– 22 BINs. Although all BIN splits need further study to clarify the taxonomic status of the entities involved, DNA bar- codes discriminated 98% of the 1018 species. The present survey conservatively revealed 16 species new to science, 52 species new to Canada and major range extensions for 426 species. -

BASTAWADE** Biodiversity Research Cell, Carmel College for Women, Nuvem, Goa-403 604 INTRODUCTION Arachnids have not received the attention that they deserve from taxonomists, despite the fact that the Indian subcontinent supports a rich Arachno-faunal diversity. In absence of recent exploratory surveys, the monumental work of the early workers continues to retain its importance as exemplified by Pocock's classic work, dating back to last sanctuary. Comprising the largest of the Chelicerate classes, arachnids are generally not so easily understood and appreciated. Further, forms such as the whip spiders continue to be seen with awe, due to their strange look, habits and secretive habitats. Pocock's bifurcation of the whip spiders and whip scorpions into orders Amblypygi and Uropygi respectively was unified under a single order Pedipalpida by Werner (1935). As for this order, there is a paucity of updated information at least for the Indian region. Presented here is the range extension, only a fifth record since Fauna of British India (Pocock, 1900) and the first definitive record of the whip spider, Phryniclts phipsoni from the state of Goa. Interestingly, it is also the first case on record, of their presence from human habitations in India. Hygropetric and Litter-Inhabiting Spiders (Araneae) from the Abruzzo Apennines (Central Italy)

Mitt. 37: 15-26 Nürnberg, Juli 2009 Hygropetric and litter-inhabiting spiders (Araneae) from the Abruzzo Apennines (Central Italy) Marco Isaia, Giuseppe Osella & Giovanna Pannunzio Abstract: We present the results of a study of spider material extracted by means of Berlese apparatus from wet mosses and by litter sieving in broadleaf woods within several natural reserves of the Abruzzo region (Central Italy). The main aim of the work is to contribute to the knowledge of the spider fauna of the Apen- nines; currently one of the lesser known in Italy. In total, 520 spiders, belonging to 49 species and 14 families were collected. The most abundant and diverse family was Linyphiidae, with 278 individuals belonging to 22 species. Altogether we provide 28 new records for the Abruzzo region, including two species of Theridiidae, twenty of Linyphiidae, four of Hahniidae and two of Thomisidae. We also present additional unpublished records of several rare, litter-inhabiting species collected by litter sieving in the same area. Data on habitat preferences and details on the Italian distribution of the rarest species are presented. Key words: Berlese apparatus, Dysderidae, Linyphiidae, litter sieving, National Park of Gran Sasso, National Park of Monti della Laga, regional fauna Hygropetric habitats become established on rocky published records of several rare, litter-inhabiting or soil surfaces, with thin water films moving down species collected by litter sieving in the same area, in a mostly laminar flow. This habitat is colonised including details on their Italian distribution and mainly by bryophytes (mosses and peat-mosses) habitat preference. and often harbours unique assemblages of arthro- pods, characterised by endemic or rare species. -

Such protocols set rules for the orderly acquisition of samples to estimate community parameters and to establish comparisons between areas. These methods have been tested worldwide, providing useful data for inventory planning and optimal sampling allocation efforts. The taxonomic counterpart of biodiversity inventories has received considerably less attention. Species lists and their relative abundances are the only link between the community parameters resulting from a biotic inventory and the biology of the species that live there. However, this connection is lost or speculative at best for species only partially identified (e. g., to genus but not to species). This link is particularly important for diverse tropical regions were many taxa are undescribed or little known such as spiders. One approach to this problem has been the development of biodiversity inventory websites that document the morphology of the species with digital images organized as standard views. -

Steiermark Sonderheft S. 5-112 Graz 1996 Die Spinnen der Steiermark (Arachnida, Araneae) Von Christian KROPF und Peter HORAK Summary: A comprehensive list of the spiders of Styria (southeastern part of Austria) is presented. It is based on an analysis of the literature from 1761 to 1994 inclusively as well as on own unpublished findings. The list contains 564 species; 34 of them are recorded here for the first time. The present state of knowledge is relatively poor, 43% of the species are recorded up till now only from one or two localities; ecological and phenological data about each species are presented. Pecularities of the Styrian spider fauna are alpine-endemic species, South-European (mediterranean, illyric) and East-European (pannonic) species. Some of diem find their limits of distribution there. An historical overview on araneological research in Styria is given. Zusammenfassung: Eine zusammenfassende Liste der Spinnen der Steiermark wird präsentiert. Sie basiert auf einer Auswertung der Literatur von 1761 bis inklusive 1994 sowie auf eigenen unpublizierten Funden. Die Liste enthält 564 Arten, von denen 34 hier zum erstenmal nachgewiesen werden. Der gegenwärtige Wissensstand ist relativ niedrig; 43% der Arten sind nur von einem oder zwei Fundorten bekannt; zu jeder Art werden ökologische und phänologische Angaben gemacht. Be- sonderheiten der steirischen Spinnenfauna sind alpine Endemiten, mediterrane, illyrische und pannonische Arten. Einige davon finden hier ihre Verbreitungsgrenzen. Ein historischer Überblick über die araneologische Forschung in der Steiermark ergänzt die Faunenliste. 1. Ozier9, and Alan Cressler10 Abstract We provide an annotated checklist of species recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats in the state of Georgia, USA. We report 281 species (228 invertebrates and 53 vertebrates), including 51 troglobionts (cave-obligate species), from more than 150 sites (caves, springs, and wells). Endemism is high; of the troglobionts, 17 (33 % of those known from the state) are endemic to Georgia and seven (14 %) are known from a single cave. We identified three biogeographic clusters of troglobionts. Two clusters are located in the northwestern part of the state, west of Lookout Mountain in Lookout Valley and east of Lookout Mountain in the Valley and Ridge. In addition, there is a group of tro- globionts found only in the southwestern corner of the state and associated with the Upper Floridan Aquifer. At least two dozen potentially undescribed species have been collected from caves; clarifying the taxonomic status of these organisms would improve our understanding of cave biodiversity in the state.
