During a short collecting trip to Montenegro in 2014, 26 locations were sampled and 692 specimens belonging to 45 species of water beetles were collected. The following species are recorded for the first time from Montenegro: Haliplus dal- matinus J. Müller, 1900, Haliplus heydeni Wehncke, 1875, Haliplus laminatus (Schaller, 1783), Hydroporus erythrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Hyphydrus anatolicus (Guignot, 1957), Melanodytes pustulatus (Rossi, 1792) and Rhantus bistriatus (Bergsträsser, 1778). The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. The trials and tribulations of the search for these fascinating insects are described in a recent article in British Wildlife (Sutton 2017). This article also reveals that some of the medium-sized species of interest, such as those of the genus Rhantus have been included, as have species from other groups, including the raft spider, Dolomedes plantarius (Clerck) and a rare wasp, Chalcis sispes (L.), parasitic on soldierflies (Stratiomyidae), which collectively highlight the conservation importance of some of the very special habitats in which they may be found. Survey of ponds at Stow Bedon Fuel Allotment A report for the Freshwater Habitats Trust Martin Hammond Ecology [email protected] & July 2016 Updated October 2016 Summary Stow Bedon Fuel Allotment is part of Stow Bedon Common, a landscape containing numerous natural ponds formed in the late Ice Age by freezing and thawing of upwelling ground water. Such ponds are referred to as pingos or palsa-scars and are a characteristic feature of the Breckland Commons of West Norfolk. Neighbouring Thompson Common is famous for the rich biodiversity of its pingos, but the wildlife interest of the ponds on Stow Bedon Common is much less well-recorded. In spring/summer 2016, 16 ponds on Stow Bedon Fuel Allotment were surveyed for wetland plants and aquatic macro-invertebrates using National Pond Survey methodology. One further pond was sampled briefly in early October. Nine of these ponds were also evaluated using PSYM, the recognised methodology for monitoring the ecological quality of permanent or semi-permanent ponds. Eight of these were categorised as being of high ecological quality. All pingo/palsa-scar ponds are classed as Priority Ponds and are therefore Habitats of Principal Importance as defined under Section 41 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act; eleven of the sixteen ponds surveyed also qualified as Priority Ponds under other criteria such as the presence of rare species or their exceptionally diverse plant or invertebrate assemblages. Although not as rich as neighbouring Thompson Common, the site produced an impressive list of aquatic invertebrates including several ‘relict fen’ rarities which are restricted to ancient wetlands. -

Annotation In my thesis I examined the structure and dynamics of a water beetle community in a semipermanent wetland in an alder carr. The results are based on three years of my field work and processing of material collected by a light trap at the study site during five years. The thesis focuses on: 1. Comparison of selectivity and efficiency of several widely used sampling methods; 2. Seasonal dynamics and effects of environmental variables on flight acitivity; 3. Spatiotemporal dynamics and effects of habitat structure and fluctuations in water levels. General patterns and relationships are highlighted. These artificial linear water bodies are interconnected to form networks that can offer valuable habitats for many water associated organisms. The current study contributes to the knowledge of aquatic Coleoptera biodiversity associated with artificial drainage ditches. Fundamental ecological and faunistical findings were combined with aspects relevant for applied nature conservation. Adult beetles were sampled at 124 sampling locations belonging to seven study sites in the federal state of Brandenburg, Germany. With 108 taxa out of 10 families the studied ditches showed a high species richness. Taxa associated with eutrophic conditionsonly dominated with the dytiscid Hydroporus palustris as the most abundant species. In terms of β-diversity, a moderate turnover between the study sites could be observed. Although the sampling locations showed some degree of variability concerning habitat characteristics, measured environmental parameters only weakly explained observed differences in community composition. Beside taxonomical characterization of beetle diversity, aspects of functional diversity were analyzed. -

E-mail: [email protected] Running header: Range shifts in Quaternary water beetles 1 ABSTRACT Aim To undertake a quantitative review of the Quaternary fossil record of European water beetles to evaluate their geographical and temporal coverage, and to characterize the extent and typology of the shifts in their geographical ranges. Location Europe. Methods We compiled Quaternary water beetle records from public databases and published references. We included in the analyses species of ten families of aquatic Coleoptera, and recorded range shifts through the comparison of the location of fossil remains with the current distribution of the species. We explored the ecological representativeness of the fossil record, as well as the relationship between range shifts and the habitat type of the species. Results Our final data set included over 9,000 records for 259 water beetle species. Aquatic beetle fossil remains have been documented exclusively north of 42º N, with most of the records from the British Isles and virtually none from Southern Europe or the Mediterranean Basin.
