Institute of Archaeology. +" ýý ýýýýtiý -1- nNDLO This thesis is a study of the bronze Italian helmet over six centuries, from the last quarter of the sixth century B. C to the end of the 1st century A. D. It surveys and examines the mainstream development and evolution of the helmet in the Apennine peninsula, in particular the nine major forms which dominate the equipment of the Italian warrior during this period i. e. The Apulo-Corinthian, the Negau, the Italo-Chalkidian, the Etrusco-Thracian, the Italo-Pilos, the Samno-Attic, the Montefortino, the Coolus and the Hagenau helmets. Starting from the premise that the majority of helmets no matter of what form, were intended to be functional and that their evolution is entirely dependent upon the type of warfare for which each form was developed, the changing nature of that warfare and the cultural affinities of the people who used it, this thesis discusses the external agencies and cultural influences that can be traced in the development of each form, the origins of the forms themselves and provides a definitive typology for each. Where possible it also establishes an absolute chronology for these typologies, based upon dated examples, the stylistic evolution of form, the size and shape of the helmet bowl, its decoration and standards of manufacture and finish. Due to the complexities of the manufacturing processes involved in the production of bronze helmets and as many of the techniques used were common to all forms this'Study commences with an examination of these proce and the tools and technology employed including an examination of the growth of mass-production technique in Italian helmet production. Where possible workshop groups have been isolated -2- for each form and areas of regional production defined. This analysis is based on a detailed examination and comparison of the distribution of each type within each form, their dating, fittings i. e crest- fixtures, cheek-pieces etc and their decoration and its possible derivation. Finally the functional aspects of the bronze Italian helmet are discussed and attempts are made to account for the overwhelming popularity of the Montefortino helmet which from the the end of the third century B. C. had eclipsed all other Italian helmet forms. It examines the disappearance of the majority of these culturally distinct types which is a marked feature of Rome domination of Italy. It concludes therefore that it is Rome's centralisation of production under her political and military control that led to the suppression of the widespread indigenous Italian arms industries and inevitably led to the progressive rearmament of the Apennine peninsula after the Roman and ultimately Celtic fashion and therefore that it is Rome's cultural control of Italy that led to the supremacy of the Montefortino helmet. -3- Contents: Page No.: 2. In Ancient Greece, an emphasis on camaraderie and communal reliance developed the concept of unit cohesion and specialization. Ultimately, Greece would become the birthplace of Western Military thought. The maturation of this mentality can be traced through the stylistic and technological progression of military helmets. Experimentations with helmet design illuminate the limitations and intricacies of warfare as it was developed in the ancient world. Though the development of any technology is nonlinear, studying the evolution of stylistic designs reveals how the unique style of combat in Greece changed war. The history of the Greek helmet began in the 17th century BCE, when the Mycenaean Empire controlled Greece. At the time, the Boar’s Tusk Helmet was popular throughout the region. This conically shaped helmet consisted of alternating levels of boars’ tusks in a style and design that may have originated in Western Europe (Snodgrass 19). The tusks were sewn into a felt or leather cap which served as the base of the helmet. In all reality, the boar’s tusks would have shattered after a single blow, but were an improvement over leather or even felt (Everson 10-11). Additionally, the laces holding the tusks in place would have been exposed and vulnerable, so leather strands were probably tied between the alternating tusks in order to protect the laces (Everson 7).

In date, it spans the period from 2 BC to the third century AD. On both the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts the sea level has risen in relation to the landmass, submerging the Oenotrides islands which once provided anchorage off the west coast at Velia, and drowning Roman coastal installations on the Adriatic (Michaelides 1992, 21). As elsewhere in the peninsula, the increase in human population has led to deforestation of the hills, with consequent erosion of the slopes and sedimentation in the valley bottoms (Boenzi 1989; Campbell 1994; Barker 1995, 62-83). Increased silting in the lower courses of the rivers created marshy conditions in the coastal plains, which were only drained and rendered safe from malaria in the mid-twentieth century. The alluvial deposits have pushed out the coastline along the Ionian Gulf and the Gulf of Paestum, so that the remains of the ancient ports there now lie a considerable distance inland. Deforestation has also led to flash flooding, which in turn has caused rivers to change their courses. Such change is vividly illustrated by the Via Traiana, which crossed the Cerbalus and Carapelle (ancient name unknown) rivers by bridges that now straddle dry land. Other changes have been brought about by more deliberate human intervention. Several inland lakes have been drained since Roman times to provide arable land or relieve malaria. We have reconstructed these on the map where the evidence is reasonably clear, as it is at Forum Popili on the R.

Lados Mr. Tom H. Thomsen Page 1 of 95 ABSTRACT This project was a study of the development of armors from 8th century BC to 4th century AD. The project was mainly focused on the evolution of armors in Europe, for which a wealth of information was present and the use of armors was extensive. To fulfill the breadth of the project, we also broaden our research to some large cultures in the regions of West Asia. The designs, metalworking techniques, materials, and improvements of armors were the emphasis of this project. Fabrication of a replica of an armor was also undertaken using only the technique allowed by the most simplest of tools in order to simulate the ancients‟ way of armor making. A database in the form of a website was created containing all the information relating to this project.
