Eminent people like Mulkraj Anand, Sajjad Jahir, Muhammad Ashraf and Bhabani Bhattacharyya were gradually involved with that platform which achieved immense moral support from Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, Ramananda Chattopadhyay, and Saratchandra Chattopadhyay. Nareshchandra Sengupta became President when its branch for Bengal was founded on June 25, 1936. He had no doubt (and was probably right about it) as to which the earliest of those was: it was the face of his nurse Blessington, leaning over his crib. She held a candle in her hand which a little dazzled him, but the sight of her face, tender and anxious, and divinely reassuring, was the point of that memory. He had been asleep, and had awoke with a start, and, finding himself alone in the midst of the immense desolation of the dark that pressed on him like an invader from all sides, he had lifted up his voice and yelled. Then, as by a conjuringtrick, Blessington had appeared with her comforting presence that quite robbed the dark of its terrors. It must still have been early in the night, for she had not yet gone to bed, and had on above her smooth grey hair her cap with its adorable blue ribands in it. At her throat was the brooch made of the same stuff as the shining shillings with which a year or two later she bought the buns and spongecakes for tea. He remembered no more than that; he knew nothing of what she had said: the whole of that memory consisted in the fact of the secure comfort and relief which her face brought.

Not only should it elucidate discussion about the theater practice of the particular language community it serves to, but also cater to the development of regional culture of that community, embalmed in socio-economic and political environment. However, if we particularize the role of these theater magazines or periodicals for the development of regional culture only, that indicates an incomplete perception and only a part of the reality. Needless to say, as we are in the doorway of 21st century, no culture can be viewed as a secluded regional culture per se. Except for the ancient groups, influence of national and global culture can now be seen in nearly every regional cultural communities. The growth of cultural industries has eliminated the gap between rural and urban cultural set up. Therefore, a competent theater magazine will not only help the culture of a particular region to bloom, but make it connect to the national and global cultural perception as well. And for that purpose, theater can motivate the life philosophy and struggle for existence of the common people, by reinforcing the socially mutual relation of the trio – dramatic arts, the artists and the audiences.

    Questions for Kumar Shahani by Aparna Franki umar Shahani is an internationally renowned filmmaker, who studied under Ritwik Ghatak and apprenticed with Robert Bresson. He is a K recipient of the prestigious Prince Claus Award (1998). His films have won several Indian Filmfare Awards and his film ‘Khayal Gatha’ won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 1990. Mr. Shahani’s essays have been published in the journals Framework and Social Scientist and he co-edited Cinema and Television: Fifty years of Reflection in France with Jacques Kermabon. Aparna Frank: In your many past interviews and essays, you have questioned simple definitions of “identity” and “culture”, including the term “multiculturalism”; hence, I am curious, what does a phrase like “Indian cinema” mean to you? Kumar Shahani: The question of identity and culture was, as you know, the product of fascism, Nazism and imperial constructs. Right up to 1961, I remember filling up forms, which asked me not only what my nationality was, but also what my race, caste, etcetera were. Therefore, I have rejected these notions totally, fundamentally and I do not ever wish to build any ideology including that of multiculturalism upon notions that have brutalised millions of people. Corporate multiculturalism and state terror are the greatest threat to humanity—they work against the very ethos of individuation. So, what does Indian cinema mean to me or to you, or to anyone else, who has fought for freedom, be it from one sort of hegemony or another? For me, and my gurus, Ritwik Ghatak, D.D Kosambiii, Jal Balaporiaiii and their gurus-Eisenstein, Einstein, Rahmat Khaniv, anything with a geographical name like “Indian” meant self- liberation.
