CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN CANADA AWARENESS WEEK

TUESDAY, MAY 24 TO FRIDAY, MAY 27, 2005

Message from the Director: Tuesday, May 24 to Friday, May 27 is Catholic Missions in Canada Awareness Week. The document below outlines the history of Catholic Missions in Canada, and how schools may access lesson plans and other information that teachers may find useful.

A missionary from Nunavut, whom Tina Molinari, the National Director of Development for Catholic Missions, describes as a dynamic speaker is available to speak to classes or groups. She may be contacted by calling Tina at 416-934-3424.

I am aware that this information is coming to you at a very busy time of the year, but the work of Catholic Missions in Canada is an important one and deserving of whatever help in awareness or involvement we might give. Catholic Missions in Canada has been around for 100 years but was largely unnoticed. DPCDSB, TCDSB and YCDSB are involved in a partnership and it is hoped to expand to other Catholic Boards. This is their first Awareness Week.

Noel P. Martin Interim Director of Education

2005 MARKS THE BEGINNING OF CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN CANADA AWARENESS WEEK

Since 1908, Catholic Missions In Canada has been supporting the needs of missionaries and mission communities across our country.

Catholics leaving Europe for rural western Canada were in danger of losing their faith due to the lack of churches and priests serving those areas of our country. Those entrusted with the care of souls at the turn of the century knew very well that European immigrants to Canada had numerous needs, not the least of which were spiritual. Today, this support reaches over 600 missionaries in 24 mission dioceses, from Haines Junction in the Yukon Territory to Black Tickle, Newfoundland and Labrador, and as far north as Igloolik, Nunavut.

In as much as Catholic Missions In Canada has been supporting mission communities across Canada for almost 100 years, there are still many Catholic Canadians that are not aware of the valuable work done to help sustain communities in some of the most poor and remote areas in Canada.

With the endorsement and support of three school boards in the GTA, namely Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board and York Catholic District School Board, Catholic Missions In Canada has begun an awareness campaign to reach out to other Catholic partners.

We are Partners in Catholic Education, a THE DIRECTOR’S BULLETIN #35 Fellowship of Inspiration and Unending Dedication.

May 24, 2005 SUBJECT: 2b

Schools in all three boards now have the opportunity to access, from our web site, lesson plans that teachers can implement within the school curriculum. The plans are in congruence with the students’ faith development, and social responsibility, in addition to broadening their insight into Canadian history and geography in the process. They will gain an understanding of the work that is done in mission communities and that as rich and diverse as Canada is, they will learn that there are students, children and families that are not as fortunate.

Although Catholic Missions In Canada is a fundraising organization, the need to raise the level of awareness regarding the Catholic mission communities is just as important. It’s only through awareness that Catholics will feel compelled to become part of the solution to the struggles experienced in the northern areas where unemployment is high and resources are minimal.

The goal of the Awareness Week in schools is to bring the reality of “life in the mission communities” into the classrooms in the GTA, to empower students, staff, teachers, the school community as a whole to hear the call to action and be compelled to respond.

For a school or a youth group, the funds raised would be applied to the needs of the children and youth in the missions. The students would get the satisfaction of knowing they have made a difference in the life of another child, student or youth. The needs are varied from one area to the next; a complete list of requests can be accessed through the website.

Areas in need of support Most urgent needs: Many of our missionaries live in pockets of poverty across Canada. They live in old buildings with neither water nor sewage systems. Basic needs of missionaries: Priests, sisters, deacons, brothers and lay pastoral leaders live and work in poor and remote mission communities. Building and repairs: Grants and loans allow communities to repair leaky roofs, repair perma-frost damaged foundations, replace caved-in walls, and renovate older halls and rectories, or rebuild churches lost to fire. Seminarians and Lay Formation: Seminarians from our mission dioceses are studying and discerning their call to the priesthood. Religious education of children: The mission communities don’t have Catholic Schools to prepare and assist them in their spiritual development. With the support of Catholic Missions In Canada thousands of Catholics, both children and adults, can prepare for the sacraments. They can develop and enrich their faith lives through religious education programs, Bible studies, and prayer circles. Ministry to First Nations: Roughly 50 percent of our funding assists First Nations Peoples to celebrate their Catholic faith within the richness of their own heritage and traditions.

STUDENT RECORDS [Reference: Min. of Education. The Ontario Student Record (OSR). 2000.]

STUDENT TRANSCRIPTS: REMINDER TO STUDENTS Principals of TCDSB secondary schools are requested to remind all currently enrolled students that they MUST obtain any needed transcripts from their own school, before the last day of school, 2005.

Archives and Records Management Department produces only historical transcripts for students demitted prior to June 30, 1999.

TRANSFER OF ONTARIO STUDENT RECORDS Principals should NOT send an OSR to another school or board in Ontario without a written and signed request form (signature of principal/ vice principal or guidance head in the case of secondary schools) Appendix H

The signed request form is proof that the sending school transferred the student OSR in keeping with statutory requirements.

Before an OSR is transferred to the receiving school, the principal should review the contents to ensure that only that which is “conducive to the improvement of the student’s instruction” is left in the OSR.

The most secure method for transferring all OSR Folders is by Purolator Courier. This applies to both internal and external OSR transfers,

The sending and receiving schools can access and print off the transfer transaction at the Purolator Courier website for their records.

St. Denis CS buoyed by swimming results The Mirror - May. 13, 2005

Members of the St. Denis Catholic School swim team went to great lengths at their last meet when almost every member reached their personal best.

The 49-member team practiced three days a week for the meet held at Etobicoke Olympium last month. Many of the relay teams were made up of students who were swimming in older age groups, said coach Andrea Cotton.

Hannah Casey, Ben Travaglini and the Grade 5 boys relay team won bronze medals in their events. Sam Biglieri won a gold and a silver medal. Matthew Hill won a silver medal. Cotton said she was proud of the sportsmanship and positive team attitude displayed by the St. Denis swimmers.

New school gets an 'A' Mirror - May. 13, 2005

Students and staff at St. Timothy's Catholic School in North York have a new building to call their own. The original Sheppard Avenue and Don Mills Road school was built in 1964 and the new building was built just behind it on the same property over 18 months, starting in 2002.

Although the school has been operating since September, an official opening ceremony was held last week on the grounds, said Emmy Milne, superintendent of communications for the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

"The school needed a new building," she said. "We haven't been opening a lot of new schools. We opened a few new buildings over the last few years and the next one we plan to open is in Etobicoke."

The new wheelchair accessible junior kindergarten to Grade 8 school includes large windows, a "rainbow"- coloured staircase, a double gym and an atrium with sunlight coming down from the second floor.

A stained glass window set on the second floor creates a smorgasbord of colour when penetrated by sunlight.

Margaret Lato, principal of St. Timothy's Catholic School, said the 553 students and staff have been in awe over the new school building since it opened in the fall.

"You should have heard the staff with their oohs and aahs," she said.

"The colours are so amazing. We have an atrium that we've never had before. The architecture is amazing and we have lots of windows and you can see the beautiful landscape from the front. We now have a circular driveway for parents and school buses to use. When we had the old school, parents would have to park on Rochelle (Crescent) and wait."

Soccer Maroons prepare to test playoff mettle The Mirror - May. 18, 2005

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Neil McNeil Maroons but somebody obviously forgot to point that out to the Scarborough-based boys' high school soccer team. The Maroons, who compete in the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA), went through their regular season undefeated. Neil McNeil posted a record of 4-0-1 and placed first in the league's six-team South Division. Neil McNeil coach Tony Fiorino said he is surprised at how well his charges have performed.

"I thought it was going to be a rebuilding year," said Fiorino, who shares the Maroons' coaching duties with Elvis Thomas, a former member of the Canadian men's national soccer team. "We have some young guys on the team. But they've come together. And they've come together well." For Thomas, this marks his second year of coaching the Neil McNeil club. He had also played for the Maroons - leading them to a provincial championship - during his high school days.

Neil McNeil is scheduled to begin its playoff schedule today (Wednesday) when they host St. Patrick at 3:30 p.m. St. Patrick placed fourth in the league's South Division with a record of 2-2-1. Neil McNeil beat St. Patrick by one goal (3-2) in their regular season matchup. "I'm a little bit concerned," Fiorino said. "They've got a good striker coming back to the team who didn't play in the regular season game against us. The game is up in the air but I think we can do well." The Maroons are led by Nicola Loschiavo, a Grade 11 student. When he is not playing in net, Loschiavo is a star midfielder with the Neil McNeil squad. Another key player is Rohan Brown, a Grade 11 striker.

The TDCAA also includes North, West and East divisions. Each grouping featured six entrants. And the top four finishers in each division qualified for the playoffs, resulting in 16 post-season participants. Fiorino believes his side can enjoy some playoff success. "I think we're good for one or two rounds," he said. "And then I think if we can get a couple of bounces, we'll go a bit further."

Soccer Monarchs prepare for playoff march The Mirror - May. 18, 2005

The Dante Alighieri Monarchs were unbeatable in regular season action but now the North York-based high school boys soccer team must face an old nemesis in its opening playoff game.

The Monarchs are scheduled to begin their playoffs today (Wednesday) with a game against St. Basil. The Monarchs compete in the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA). Dante Alighieri posted a regular season record of 4-0-1, good for top spot in the league's six-team North Division while St. Basil placed fourth with its 2-1-2 record.

Though the Monarchs had a better record, today's playoff match will be held at St. Basil. That's because Dante Alighieri's field is under construction. As a result, the team has been forced to play all of its games on the road this season.

"We're used to playing on the road," Monarchs coach Luigi Spedaliere said. "There's no pressure." The Monarchs battled to a 2-2 draw against St. Basil in a regular season matchup just two weeks ago. "We were extremely happy with what we did in that game," Spedaliere said. "We got an early goal. That's the thing we want to do again."

Dante Alighieri will also be looking to avenge last year's playoff loss to St. Basil. The Monarchs were thumped 5-0 in that contest. "You can never take St. Basil lightly," Spedaliere said. "They're extremely talented." And as it proved once again this season, the St. Basil club can score with some frequency.

Both Dante Alighieri and St. Basil scored 21 goals each in their five regular season games. The Monarchs, though, were a bit better defensively. Dante Alighieri allowed just four goals in their five matches while St. Basil yielded nine goals. No doubt the Monarchs will be hoping for a lengthy playoff run such as the one they enjoyed two years ago.

Dante Alighieri captured the gold medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament in 2003. OFSAA will stage four separate provincial boys' tournaments this year for schools at the A, AA, AAA and AAAA levels.

All of the events will run June 2-4 but in varying locations.

Playoff test awaits soccer Trojans Season begins anew for Michael Power boys' team as they head to post-season - The Mirror - May. 18, 2005

The Michael Power/St. Joseph Trojans have been a force on the soccer pitch this season and the Etobicoke-based boys' high school soccer team is now hoping to continue its winning ways in the playoffs.

The Trojans posted a perfect 5-0 regular season record in the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA). Michael Power/St. Joseph finished atop the standings in the league's six-team West Division. TDCAA also has East, North and South divisions. Each grouping features six entrants.

The Trojans were the only side in the 24-team league to win all five of their regular season matches. Three other squads were also undefeated and had 4-0-1 records. "We've been working hard since September," said Aquino Laudari, who shares the Trojans' coaching duties with Gabe Piccolo and Joe DiCarlo. "And our hard work has paid off."

In preparation for the spring schedule, the Trojans began training in the fall by frequently going on five- and seven- kilometre runs. Then, through the winter months, team members did some circuit training, riding stationary bikes and lifting weights. The club also entered a couple of indoor tournaments and participated in some exhibition matches.

The Trojans are scheduled to kick off their post-season today (Wednesday). Michael Power/St. Joseph will play host to Father John Redmond in a 4:30 p.m. match. Father John Redmond had placed fourth in the TDCAA's West Division with a record of 2-3-0. Laudari said all 16 league playoff participants have a new focus now. "It's not about regular season standings now," he said. "It's about who wants it more."

The Trojans though were certainly dominant in regular season action. They scored 15 goals in their five games and allowed just one. Michael Power/St. Joseph goalkeeper Marco Orla, a Grade 12 student, registered four shutouts. The only goal Orla surrendered was in the Trojans' 2-1 victory over Father Henry Carr. Laudari is certainly hoping history does not repeat itself.

The nucleus of the Trojans' roster also had a solid campaign two years ago at the junior boys' level. That Michael Power/St. Joseph team was then upset by Father John Redmond in an opening playoff contest. Many of the players from both squads will square off again today.

"They remember that Redmond team from two years ago," Laudari said of his players. "They want a little revenge now."
