Cantors today realise that unless they take the viability of their future into their own hands, the timeless and traditional cantorial music loved by centuries of Jews may be lost forever. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis warned that anti-Jewish racism was a new poison that had taken root in the party. In the words of MP Louise Ellman, “How many Jewish members have been bullied, abused and driven out?” Members and staff who have dared to speak out against the hate were purged, but not those who declared ‘Heil Hitler’ and ’F*ck the Jews’ or ‘Jews are the problem’. No wonder a poll of the Jewish Leadership Council found that 47% of respondents said they would consider leaving the UK if Corbyn became prime minister. Postscript: The SWC released its #1 choice for its Top Ten 2019 list five days before the UK election. Corbyn’s Labour was trounced by PM Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party in the December 12th elections. Some analysts say that anti-Semitism impacted the voters. Corbyn has resigned as leader of the Labour Party. DEADLY DOMESTIC TERRORISTS TARGET JEWS IN THE US AND GERMANY 2 In Jersey City, NJ, a kosher market was the target of domestic terrorists. • Doing God Reading the UK General Election Campaign (November 6 – December 12, 2019) Through the Lens of Religion
Doing God Reading the UK General Election Campaign (November 6 – December 12, 2019) through the Lens of Religion Ryan Service, Pontifical Gregorian University, Italy Abstract This study evaluates the relationship between political engagement and religious interest in British society. The paper examines this relationship through the lens of the general election campaign in December 2019 in which religious leaders, religious identity, and religious intolerance were part of the assessment of electability in relation to parties and their leaders. Analyzing specific interventions of the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby it is asked whether 2019’s UK general election evidences the continuing role of senior religious leaders within political debate and whether this is continuous with a particular form of religious establishment. Keywords: general election, politics, electoral campaign, UK parliament, establishment An Essay Contemporary society operates as if affective-neutrality were a sufficient value-orientation for things to work; it may yet discover that there are other necessities, the virtues nurtured essentially in local communities, in religious contexts, which in the long run will be shown to be as indispensable to the society of the future as they were to the communities of the past (Wilson: 52). Recalling Alistair Campbell’s well known adage of the New Labour governments (1997– 2010) that “we don’t do God” (Brown) in the light of the United Kingdom’s 2019 general election introduces a tone of bitter irony. The statement raised in its own time the question of 1 Doing God state interference in religious affairs, however ill-defined those affairs were.

  • A Connected Commonwealth
A CONNECTED COMMONWEALTH The Commonwealth Service A Celebration of the Commonwealth Monday 11th March 2019, 3.00 pm Photo credit: Rex Features Commonwealth Day Message 2019 Commonwealth Day has a special significance this year as we mark the 70th anniversary of the London Declaration, when nations of the Commonwealth agreed to move forward together as free and equal members. The vision and sense of connection that inspired the signatories has stood the test of time, and the Commonwealth continues to grow, adapting to address contemporary needs. Today, many millions of people around the world are drawn together because of the collective values shared by the Commonwealth. In April last year, I welcomed the leaders of our 53 nations to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and we all witnessed how the Commonwealth vision offers hope, and inspires us to find ways of protecting our planet, and our people. We are able to look to the future with greater confidence and optimism as a result of the links that we share, and thanks to the networks of cooperation and mutual support to which we contribute, and on which we draw. With enduring commitment through times of great change, successive generations have demonstrated that whilst the goodwill for which the Commonwealth is renowned may be intangible, its impact is very real. We experience this as people of all backgrounds continue to find new ways of expressing through action the value of belonging in a connected Commonwealth. I hope and trust that many more will commit to doing so this Commonwealth Day.
