TESTING THE IMPLICATIONS OF AN INTEGRATED RURAL TOURISM FRAMEWORK FOR THE NIAGARA WINE REGION MARK ROBERT HOLMES A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO AUGUST, 2014 © MARK ROBERT HOLMES, 2014 Abstract Tourism, in general, can contribute to and integrate with rural economies for rural development through industry associations and community participation (Saxena et al., 2007), as well as act as a storehouse for “natural and historical heritage” (Lane, 1994, p. 103). As realization that tourism can benefit local areas increases, so too has the discussion around tourism as a tool for rural areas. In 2007, building on the concept of Integrated Rural Development (IRD), Saxena et al. first discussed the concept of Integrated Rural Tourism (IRT). IRT was suggested as an approach to understanding the complexities of rural tourism through an examination of seven components (networking, scale, endogeneity, sustainability, embeddedness, complementarity, and empowerment), and as a means for exploring the ability of tourism to produce benefits for the rural area. In the past, IRT has been used to examine how tourism has aided rural development in Europe and the US; however, its use in Canada, and more specifically the Niagara Peninsula, has yet to be realized. Using the Niagara Peninsula Appellation (NPA), the largest wine region in Ontario and Canada, as the case study, this project involved interviewing 17 wineries and five industry associations, in an attempt to answer two specific questions: (1) how does the wine industry and wine tourism aid in the development of Niagara’s rural area using the IRT concept, and (2) how can IRT aid in rural development through direct, experiential, conservation, development, and synergistic benefits.

  • Celebrating Extreme Wines
Celebrating Extreme Wines: 24 Winter 2012-3 Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Icewine Festival By Gloria Hildebrandt Photos by Mike Davis Every winter Niagara-on-the-Lake clears its main street to let tents, bar tables and ice sculptures take over for an icewine festival. Other towns have their own events as part of a Region-wide celebration of Canada’s most famous wine export to the world. Niagara-on-the-Lake has around 30 local wineries that produce icewine and the town’s Queen St. is the place to be to savour their astonishing variety. f your first experience of icewine was a sweet, thick taste that you haven’t been eager to repeat, you’re in Ifor a surprise. Icewine is no longer cloyingly super syrupy. Instead, icewines taste fresh, clear, bright and intensely fruity in particular flavours such as peach, cherry, strawberry or apple, plus complex blends including spice and even chocolate. Yet they are much more like fresh fruit than sugar. Icewine is wine made from grapes that have been allowed to freeze naturally on the vine. When harvested, the grapes are pressed while frozen, which leaves behind most of the water as ice, and results in very sweet, concentrated juice. Icewine production is considered to have begun commercially in Ontario by Inniskillin in 1984. In 1991 they won a prestigious international award for their 1989 Vidal Icewine. Inniskillin icewine is now available in 73 countries ▲ “We like wine. We like to do this on the weekends,” say from left, Andrew Sitko, Jamie King, around the world.

FINGER LAKES Vineyard Notes Newsletter #4 June 27, 2008 IN THIS ISSUE Shoot Density and Canopy Management for Hybrids Tim Martinson Shoot Density and Canopy 1 Senior Extension Associate Management for Hybrids [email protected] Bird Netting Research 5 Justine Vanden Heuvel Update - 2007 Assistant professor Dept. Horticultural Sciences 33rd Annual ASEV-ES NYS Agricultural Experiment Station Meeting to Focus on 6 Geneva, NY Aromatic White Wines One of the basic principles of viticulture is that vines function best and deliver optimal fruit quality - and quantity- when the grapevine canopy ASEV-ES Technical is in balance with the amount of fruit the vine is carrying. This applies Program and Syposium 7 whether or not the crop is Concord juice grapes or high-end Cabernet Schedule franc. A grower managing a vineyard wants to have the proper ratio of leaf area to fruit to be able to support a reasonable (or large) crop and be Upcoming Events 9 able to ripen it. Too much vegetative growth (under cropping) leads to shoot crowding, excessive shading, numerous leaf layers, and less fruitful buds the following year. Too little leaf area for the amount of fruit present and the fruit won’t ripen (overcropping). Highly vigorous vines with dense canopies can get caught in a vicious vegetative cycle - where excessive growth leads to less fruitful buds, which leads to more growth and even lower bud fruitfulness. Moreover, in dense canopies, quality of the fruit that is there is compromised. For example, the Traminette vines in Figure 1 had received excessive nitrogen, and produced an extremely dense canopy.
