Heberlein, Thomas A. 2017. Sweden
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, March 5, 2017 Sweden is safe Since President Donald Trump called attention to violence in Sweden, we have had American journalists show up here. One, Tim Pool — funded in part by right-wing editor Paul Joseph Watson who tweeted “Any journalist claiming Sweden is safe; I will pay for travel costs & accommodation for you to stay in crime ridden migrant suburbs of Malmo” — visited Rosengård, Malmö’s toughest immigrant area. He was followed by Swedish reporters and found what was no surprise to me, an American living in Sweden: “If this is the worst Malmö can offer never come to Chicago.” Pool claimed Chicago had about 750 murders last year. All of Sweden, which has three times the population of Chicago, had 112 murders in 2015 (the last year for which statistics are available). Malmö, with a population of 330,000, had 12 murders in 2016. Madison, with a population of 243,000 had nine. So per capita, you are about as safe in Malmö as in Madison. Pool also said after a few hours in Rosengård: “For anyone worried about violence in Malmö and worried that he will be robbed or attacked in Rosengård is ‘löliga’ (ridiculous).” On TV news, he was shown walking in the community and reported it was boring and the only danger he felt was from the ice on the sidewalks. Sweden, I admit, is not a perfect society: It does have problems keeping ice off the sidewalks, and thousands are injured in falls every year. THE PORTRAYAL OF MARIJUANA ON VICE.COM DOCUMENTARIES The Graduate School of Economics and Social Sciences of İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University by GÖKÇE ÖZSU In Partial Fulfillment of Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND DESIGN İHSAN DOĞRAMACI BİLKENT UNIVERSITY ANKARA August 2017 Scanned by CamScanner ABSTRACT THE PORTRAYAL OF MARIJUANA ON VICE.COM DOCUMENTARIES Özsu, Gökçe MA, The Department of Communication and Design Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Bülent Çaplı August 2017 This thesis aims to examine the representational attitude of vice.com (or VICE) documentaries covering marijuana, in the context of normalization. In this respect, this thesis mainly descriptively analyses three VICE documentaries covering marijuana in the setting of recreation, medicine and industry. VICE is a United States based media outlet which uses hybrid form of journalism combining conventional form of media operations and new media techniques. Normalization is a sociological concept for describing the the scale of social acceptance as a norm which was disseminated from the iii margins of the society towards mainstream scale. To implement descriptive analysis on vice.com documentaries, normalization and drug representation in the United States media has been evaluated in the socio-historical setting, and examined. As a major finding, even though vice.com documentaries represent marijuana as normal, the normative references of normalization of marijuana is not clear. In this respect, in the conclusion, the determiners and normative background of normalization of marijuana are tried to be discussed. FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’S Campaign Against the Media on @Realdonaldtrump and Reactions to It on Twitter
“FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’s Campaign Against the Media on @realdonaldtrump and Reactions To It on Twitter A PEORIA Project White Paper Michael Cornfield GWU Graduate School of Political Management [email protected] April 10, 2019 This report was made possible by a generous grant from William Madway. SUMMARY: This white paper examines President Trump’s campaign to fan distrust of the news media (Fox News excepted) through his tweeting of the phrase “Fake News (Media).” The report identifies and illustrates eight delegitimation techniques found in the twenty-five most retweeted Trump tweets containing that phrase between January 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018. The report also looks at direct responses and public reactions to those tweets, as found respectively on the comment thread at @realdonaldtrump and in random samples (N = 2500) of US computer-based tweets containing the term on the days in that time period of his most retweeted “Fake News” tweets. Along with the high percentage of retweets built into this search, the sample exhibits techniques and patterns of response which are identified and illustrated. The main findings: ● The term “fake news” emerged in public usage in October 2016 to describe hoaxes, rumors, and false alarms, primarily in connection with the Trump-Clinton presidential contest and its electoral result. ● President-elect Trump adopted the term, intensified it into “Fake News,” and directed it at “Fake News Media” starting in December 2016-January 2017. 1 ● Subsequently, the term has been used on Twitter largely in relation to Trump tweets that deploy it. In other words, “Fake News” rarely appears on Twitter referring to something other than what Trump is tweeting about. -

Engagement with False Content Producers Plummeted on Twitter and Facebook
Engagement with False Content Producers Plummeted on Twitter and Facebook Adrienne Goldstein Manipulative News Sites Accounted for a Record Share of Facebook Interactions Sites that gather and present information irresponsibly (according to the news-rating service NewsGuard) accounted for a record-high one-fifth of Facebook interactions with U.S.-based sitesi in the second quarter of 2021, while engagement with articles from outlets that repeatedly publish false content plummeted on Twitter and Facebook. This occurred amidst an overall decline in engagement with all types of sites. After all-time highs in engagement with both types of deceptive news outlets in 2020, sites that publish false content have seen their engagement drop at much higher rates than U.S.- based sites in general, likely as a result of account takedowns and changes in policies around COVID-19 misinformation and content moderation. The changes demonstrate that Facebook and Twitter have the tools to address disinformation. However, outlets that gather and present information irresponsibly without publishing false content present a special challenge to the platforms. These sites can help spread conspiracies theories about elections and vaccines, highlighting the need for what GMF Digital calls “democratic design” principles to promote transparency and civic information. • Amidst an overall decline in Facebook interactions with U.S.-based sites that began in the latter half of 2020, interactions with outlets that collect and present information irresponsibly dropped in the second quarter of 2021. They fell by slightly less than the drop in overall traffic (35 percent vs 38 percent) and by far less than a sample of 106 trustworthy sites with perfect NewsGuard ratings (56 percent) or sites that repeatedly publish false content (54 percent). -
