Brown came to Fort Hays State from Washburn University, where he served as the defensive coordinator and defensive secondary coach from 2002-2010 and assistant head coach in 2010. The Tigers have shown steady improvement under Brown, posting a 6-5 overall mark in 2013 for the school's fi rst winning season since 2009. FHSU went 4-7 in Brown's fi rst year and followed that with a 5-6 mark in 2012 before the most recent record of 6-5, showing a one-win improvement in each year at the helm. Fort Hays State enjoyed its most All-MIAA selections under Brown in 2013 with 12 (5 defense, 5 offense, and 2 special teams). Brown has now coached 28 All-MIAA selections at Fort Hays State, including two fi rst-team selections in 2011 - linebacker Alex Whitehill and senior punter Ethan Kosjer. Whitehill led NCAA Division II and set a new Fort Hays State single-season record with 164 tackles, which was just fi ve short of the Division II single-season record. Whitehill also earned several All-American honors and was a CoSIDA/ Capital One Academic All-American. Kosjer led Super Region 4 and ranked third in NCAA Division II in punting after averaging 44.4 yards per punt. He set new single-season (44.4) and career (41.4) records at FHSU for punting average and was named to three different All-America teams. Before coming to Hays, Brown helped Washburn compile a 62-41 record in his nine-year span with the program, which included two NCAA playoff appearances and two bowl wins. In his time at Washburn, Brown coached the 2009 and 2006 MIAA Most Valuable Defensive Players and guided two players selected in the NFL Draft (defensive tackle Trey Lewis-6th round 2007, and cornerback Cary Williams-7th round 2008). Brown also coached six All-Americans, 20 all-region and 41 All-MIAA selections at Washburn. His defense led the MIAA in turnovers gained in three of his fi nal four seasons there, including a school record-tying 23 interceptions in 2007. Brown joined the Washburn coaching staff after spending three years as the secondary coach at Liberal High School where he helped the team to a mark of 37-5 in his time. Brown, a native of Liberal, Kan., is a 1996 graduate of Pittsburg State University where he recorded 470 tackles in 43 starts in his career at free safety. He is one of only three Gorillas to earn All-American honors three times. He was a unanimous All-American First Team selection his senior season and was named the CNN Division II National Player of the Year in 1995. He was also named to the NCAA Quarter Century Team for all players from 1975 to 1999 at free safety. He had a record 21 tackles in the THE BROWN FILE NCAA Division II National Championship as a freshman against Jacksonville State. PERSONAL Year at FHSU: Fourth Brown was inducted into the Pittsburg State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. He and Born: July 3, 1974 his wife, Daphne, have two sons, Hunter and Hayden. Game Recap Fort Hays State held tight with No. 8 ranked Pittsburg State for two and a half quarters on a rainy, damp night for Homecoming in Hays. However, two key turnovers by the Tigers in the third quarter led to Pittsburg State seizing control of the game, on its way to a 38-17 win over FHSU. The Gorillas remained perfect on the year at 6-0, 5-0 in the MIAA, while Fort Hays State fell to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA. Down a touchdown at the half, Fort Hays State made things interesting by knotting things with a touchdown on the fi rst drive of the second half. Quarterback Anthony Sheppard found the endzone with his legs from seven yards out to tie the game 17-17. Pittsburg State held its ground and took the lead back on its fi rst drive of the second half, an 8-play, 56-yard drive capped by a two-yard touch- down run from Eric Love to make it 24-17. The Gorillas came up with the key defensive plays to seal the game on the next two Tiger drives. On the fi rst drive, Anthony Sheppard had liter- ally no time to make a hand off as John White of Pittsburg State blew through the line to force the fumble on the exchange. Paul Robinson of PSU recovered the ball on the FHSU 34-yardline. That set up an 8-play, 34-yard drive by the Gorillas capped by a 4-yard pass from Zac Dickey to Bristan Kelley to put PSU up 31-17. Robinson would make the key play for PSU on the next FHSU drive as he intercepted an Anthony Sheppard pass at the FHSU 47-yardline and returned it all the way for a touchdown to put Pittsburg State up three touchdowns at 38-17. That would be the fi nal score as neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Pittsburg State dominated the time of possession in the game, 40:42 to 19:18. The Gorillas ran 82 plays compared to just 44 by the Tigers. Conse- quently, Pittsburg State racked up 502 total yards (343 rushing) to just 172 for FHSU. Briceton Wilson was the horse for the Gorillas in the backfi eld, grinding out 189 yards on 35 carries and two touchdowns. Both of his scores were in the fi rst half from 20 and four yards out. He had 111 yards at halftime. Nate Dreiling led the Gorillas on defense with 11 tackles and one sack. The Fort Hays State ground attack had a tough time, churning out just 76 yards in the game. Andre Smith led the way with 35 yards on eight car- ries and one touchdown from six yards out in the fi rst quarter. Anthony Sheppard fi nished 7-of-17 passing for 96 yards with one interception. Alex Whitehill, the leading tackler in NCAA Division II fi nished with 17, two above his season average. Korey Allison added 13 tackles and Layton Hickel fi nished with 11. Pittsburg State went on to win the national championship that season in NCAA Division II.
