Authentication Services in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks LOgiciels-Réseaux Willy Jiménez 08013 -LOR Hakima Chaouchi Maryline Laurent-Maknavicius _______________________________________________________________________________ Authentication Services in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks ABSTRACT The deployment of wireless ad hoc networks is useful for people when they desire to communicate even if they are not connected to any infrastructure, with the purpose of playing games, sharing internet connection, or exchange files. In some ad hoc scenarios, they might know each other, so they can establish trusted relationships. However, if the number or users and mobility increase then it is more complicated to trust all users and a security mechanism is required. Few researches has been done in this field to find security solutions for MANETs deployments; one of them proposes a framework where the traditional AAA services are distributed inside the network with the idea of allowing secure exchange of services that could be chargeable. Based on this framework, we evaluate technical solutions, focusing mainly on the Authentication service; in order to have real implementations. One possibility is using virtualization technology to offer a de-centralized authentication service. Another solution is the development of a secure version of a routing protocol that uses a de-centralized authentication service as a previous requirement to allow any node to join the ad hoc routing domain. Carrier Grade Virtualization Leveraging virtualization in Carrier Grade Systems Abstract Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) have been building networking infrastructure equipment able to deliver “carrier grade” services, typically mission-critical services such as voice telephony. In decades past, NEPs have achieved high degrees of availability through purpose-built hardware and software implementations. Today they increasingly build on COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) hardware and Open Source Software (OSS), freeing their engineering resources to focus on core telephony competencies. The move to COTS and OSS requires that these hardware and software components be available from an ecosystem of suppliers, and that they interoperate seamlessly. Bodies such as The Linux Foundation (LF), the Service Availability Forum (SA Forum) and PICMG have defined standards and specifications such as carrier grade OSes (CGLinux), Service Availability Forum APIs and AdvancedTCA hardware to target carrier grade applications. Recent advances have made virtualization appealing for carrier class equipment by permitting significant cost reduction through consolidation of workloads and of physical hardware. Virtualization also transparently lets NEPs and other OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) leverage multi-core processors to run legacy software designed for uniprocessor hardware. However, virtualization needs to meet specific requirements to enable network equipment deploying this technology to meet industry expectations for carrier grade systems. This -

Counter-Forensic Privacy Tools A Forensic Evaluation Matthew Geiger, Lorrie Faith Cranor June 2005 CMU-ISRI-05-119 Institute for Software Research, International, Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890 Abstract Modern operating systems and the applications that run on them generate copious amounts of data about their users’ activity. Users are increasingly aware of their privacy exposure from these records and from digital artifacts that linger after files are “deleted” on computers they use. Efforts to redress this privacy exposure have spawned a range of counter-forensic privacy tools – software designed to irretrievably eliminate records of computer system usage and other sensitive data. In this paper, we use forensic tools and techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of six counter-forensic software packages. The results highlight some significant shortfalls in the implementation and approach of these tools, leading to privacy concerns about the exposure of sensitive data. The findings also raise questions about the level of privacy protection that is realistic to expect from these tools, and others that take a similar approach.
