Centering on the reminiscences of Rose McNulty, a woman who has spent over fifty years in state institutions, The Secret Scripture is a deeply moving story of love lost and redeemed, against the backdrop of an emerging Irish state in which female sexuality and independence unsettles the colluding patriarchies of church and nationalist politics. Demonstrating Sheridan’s trademark skill with actors, his profound sense of story, and depth of feeling for Irish social history, The Secret Scripture marks a return to personal themes for the writer-director as well as a reunion with producer Noel Pearson, almost a quarter of a century after their breakout success with My Left Foot.

  • Shakespeare on Film- Looking for Richard
SHAKESPEAREONFILM LOOKING FOR RICHARD Teachers’ Notes This study guide is aimed at students of GCSE English and Media, A’ level English Media and Film and GNVQ Media: Communication and Production. Areas investigated include Filming Shakespeare, Language, Documentary Styles and Representation. This series of study guides aims to provide teachers with valuableresource materials for the teaching of Shakespeare throughout the National Curriculum. Synopsis The American actor Al Pacino is the co-producer, director and star of the film ‘Looking For Richard’. His project intertwines the telling of the story of Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’ with an intimate look at the actors’ and filmmakers’ processes as they come to grips with their characterisations and with translating their enthusiasm for the play onto film. The film ‘Looking For Richard’ follows their debates and revelations about the play, takes to the streets of New York to measure public opinion, visits the birthplace of Shakespeare and, finally, looks at a production of Richard III’. The film includes interviews with actors such as Kenneth Branagh and Vanessa Redgrave and seeks to prove that everyone can enjoy Shakespeare, and that his tales are timeless and universal. The completion of the film marks the culmination of a journey begun decades ago. when Pacino was touring colleges in the late 70’s talking to students who were reluctant to listen to Shakespeare and couldn’t see the relevance of his works. “But we would talk informally about the play and then I would read an excerpt” explains Pacino. Pacino notes, “By juxtaposing the day-to-day life of the actors and their characters with ordinary people, we attempted to create a comic mosaic - a very different Shakespeare.

38 The Henry James Review Appeals to Incalculability: Sex, Costume Drama, and The Golden Bowl By Dianne F. Sadoff, Miami University Sex is the last taboo in film. —Catherine Breillat Today’s “meat movie” is tomorrow’s blockbuster. —Carol J. Clover When it was released in May 2001, James Ivory’s film of Henry James’s final masterpiece, The Golden Bowl, received decidedly mixed reviews. Kevin Thomas calls it a “triumph”; Stephen Holden, “handsome, faithful, and intelligent” yet “emotionally distanced.” Given the successful—if not blockbuster—run of 1990s James movies—Jane Campion’s The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Agniezka Holland’s Washington Square (1997), and Iain Softley’s The Wings of the Dove (1997)—the reviewers, as well as the fans, must have anticipated praising The Golden Bowl. Yet the film opened in “selected cities,” as the New York Times movie ads noted; after New York and Los Angeles, it showed in university towns and large urban areas but not “at a theater near you” or at “theaters everywhere.” Never mind, however, for the Merchant Ivory film never intended to be popular with the masses. Seeking a middlebrow audience of upper-middle-class spectators and generally intelligent filmgoers, The Golden Bowl aimed to portray an English cultural heritage attractive to Anglo-bibliophiles. James’s faux British novel, however, is paradoxically peopled with foreigners: American upwardly mobile usurpers, an impoverished Italian prince, and a social-climbing but shabby ex- New York yentl. Yet James’s ironic portrait of this expatriate culture, whose characters seek only to imitate their Brit betters—if not in terms of wealth and luxury, at least in social charm and importance—failed to seem relevant to viewers The Henry James Review 23 (2002): 38–52.

  • Music in Concentration Camps 1933 Music In
Music in Concentration Camps 19331933––––19451945 GUIDO FACKLER Translated from the German by Peter Logan (Würzburg) It would be wrong to reduce the “Music of the Shoah” (Holocaust/ churbn ) to the Yiddish songs from the ghetto camps of Eastern Europe or to the multiple activities in the realm of classical or Jewish music found in the ghetto camp at Theresienstadt (Terezín), which of course enjoyed a special status as a model camp. It would be equally wrong to restrict our view of music in concentration camps to the “Moorsoldatenlied” (“The Peat Bog Soldiers”), the “Buchenwald Song,” the “Dachau Song,” or the so-called “Girls’ Orchestra in Auschwitz,” described by Fania Fénelon – also the subject of the Hollywood film entitled “Playing for Time”. 1 Instead of this, I wish to address the topic of musical activities in general in the concentration camps. 2 Thus this chapter is about those camps that the Nazi regime started to erect just a few weeks after Hitler’s assumption of power; these camps formed the seed from which the entire system of Nazi camps grew, and which eventually consisted of over 10,000 camps of various kinds. 3 In fact music was an integral part of camp life in almost all the Nazi-run camps. The questions covered by my research include: how was it possible to play music in these camps? What musical forms developed there? What, under these circumstances was the function, the effect and the significance of music for both the suffering inmates and the guards who inflicted the suffering? And how was the extent of musical activities affected by the development of the concentration camp system? My research is based on extensive archive work, the study of memoirs and literature, and interviews with witnesses.

BAMcinématek presents Queer Pagan Punk: The Films of Derek Jarman, Oct 30—Nov 11 A complete retrospective of Jarman’s 12 feature films, the most comprehensive New York series in nearly two decades New restorations of debut feature Sebastiane and Caravaggio “It feels like the correct time to be reminded of an ancient tradition that has always served civilization well, that of the independent, truth-telling poet provocateur.”—Tilda Swinton The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Sep 30, 2014—From Thursday, October 30 through Tuesday, November 11, BAMcinématek presents Queer Pagan Punk: The Films of Derek Jarman, a comprehensive retrospective of iconoclastic British filmmaker and crusading gay rights activist Derek Jarman, following its run at the BFI this spring. Jarman not only redefined queer cinema, but reimagined moviemaking as a means for limitless personal expression. From classical adaptations to historical biographies to avant-garde essay films, he crafted a body of work that was at once personal and political, during a difficult period when British independent cinema was foundering and the AIDS crisis provoked a wave of panic and homophobia. Also a poet, diarist, and painter, Jarman first entered the realm of the movies as a production designer for Ken Russell. The Devils (1971—Oct 31), Russell’s controversial opus of repressed nuns and witchcraft trials, played out in a 17th-century French village that Jarman spent a year creating. His own first feature, Sebastiane (1976—Nov 9), playing in a new restoration, placed a daring emphasis on male nudity and eroticism as it chronicled the death of the Christian martyr; Jarman called it “the first film that depicted homosexuality in a completely matter-of-fact way.” A time-traveling Queen Elizabeth I wanders among the ruins of a dystopic modern London in Jubilee (1978—Oct 30), a shot-in-the-streets survey of the burgeoning punk scene that captures early performances by Adam Ant, Wayne County, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Slits.
