With two detectives investigating four murders, repetition is the literary glue holding this complex novel together. Please Repeat That: Repetition as a Stylistic Device in Tony Hillerman’s Skinwalkers The opening sentence of Tony Hillerman’s novel Skinwalkers emphasizes a repeated sound: “clack, clack.” A cat—the spirit animal of the underworld—alerts protagonist Jim Chee to impending danger when it scurries inside the trailer. “What had chased it in? Something scary to a cat . Was it something threatening to Chee?” (9) The cat appears in the opening scene as a harbinger of danger, and its reappearance underscores how effectively Hillerman uses repetition to create tension. Much later in the novel, when Chee is afraid to approach his trailer late at night due to his fear of what danger awaits inside, he hears the “clack-clack of the cat door,” and knows it’s safe to enter (77). Repeating the distinctive sound introduced in the opening sentence is an effective structural tool, a Pavlovian response the reader associates with danger; specifically, attempted murder.

For a class at Jacksonville University ("Contemporary Detective Fiction") the classical male detective of "The Big Sleep" or "The Maltese Falcon" is first presented to students. The classical American detective character is rough, uncultured, even violent; he chain smokes, and contemporary social workers would call him an alcoholic. His sexual contacts arebrief liaisons. Throughout he remains shrewd, calculating, objective and terminally cynical about the subject of women, and indeed, about everything. In extreme contrast, the postmodern male detective presented later in the course is an untrained amateur, who is often sensitive, caring, insightful, and socially aware. Two obvious examples of these trends may be found in the work of TonyHillerman and Jonathan Kellerman. Their detectives are a caring,introspective child psychiatrist, a gay cop, and a Navajo police officer whois studying to be a shaman.

The land is sacred to the Navajo, as reflected in their religion, arts, and weaving. While enjoying Mr. Hillerman’s descriptions of southwestern landscapes and its people, review Navajo mythology with its beautiful descriptions of the cycle of life, the formation of the world, and the special reverence for land. Consider the relation of the Navajo to the Hopi and Pueblo peoples of the Anasazi migration. The course will provide an appreciation of Navajo concepts including “hozho,” going in beauty and harmony with nature, and its reversal of witchcraft (“skinwalkers”). It will delve into the basis of tribal sovereignty and existing treaties to better understand the politics of cultural preservation. The course will also consider current Navajo issues, including the control and exploitation of mineral and energy resources and their impact on the Navajo Nation. Mr. Hillerman generally weaves current issues of importance to Indian Country into his work. This is a three- semester course in which the student should expect to read about 7 first class mystery novels each semester. Slavery, the subjugation of Native Americans, the interment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. How can such 'touchy' subjects be covered in a responsible manner? In the English Literature survey class, the issue is coverage. How much time is devoted to Native American literature? Is any time devoted? In the U.S. History survey class, the issue is not coverage but time. How much time is there for the stormy, violent relationship between Native Americans and White settlers? Once Pilgrims and Indians and the first Thanksgiving are covered, then what? Is there any time left for a look at modern day relations between the two factions? The question becomes what to cover and how much? If you're looking for an innovative way to introduce modern day Indian society, problems and all, look no further than the Joe Leaphorn and Walt Longmire novels, written by Tony Hillerman and Craig Johnson, respectively. In U.S. History as in English Literature, what the student perceives to be truth can greatly effect how they understand and process the information they are given. They also bring certain perceptions into the classroom based on personal experience, other classes they have taken and information gleaned from the relationships they have had with family, friends, co-workers. It is one of the jobs of the professor to find out what those are and find a way to work with them.
