Castello di Casole The history of the Castello di Casole estate is deeply rooted in the Tuscan agricultural system of centuries past. At the time the castle was built, around 1700, dramatic changes in the social and agrarian landscape were underway. The rural houses throughout Tuscany began shifting to the sharecropping agreements, helping to dispel the centuries-old oppressive tradition of feudal serfdom. Here, for the first time in history, peasants became a party in a legal agreement – at the same level as the owner.

Typically – as was the case with Querceto Manor, as the original Castello was named – the farms of the Tuscan countryside were occupied primarily with the cultivations of cereals and legumes. Plantations of fruit-bearing trees, olive groves and vineyards were also of great importance. And of course, any self-sustaining agriculture would have a healthy vegetable garden. Lastly, the livestock largely consisted of draft oxen, pigs and poultry, with cows and horses a little less frequent.

Nearly every major room in the palace is decorated with frescoes. The subjects of these frescoes were unusual at the time in that many of them depict secular scenes instead of religious ones, which were overwhelmingly typical of Italian art of that period. The most famous of these frescoes are the three panels collectively known as Allegory and Effects of Good and Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. (You really shouldn’t miss this!)

Visitors can take a guided tour of the castle cellars starting from the sacristy and ending up in the cellars of the various churches which are now dedicated to the making and aging of Volpaia wine.

Fonterutoli Winery Another pleasant winery is the Winery, located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti (Siena), in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, it still retains its original form, that of a peaceful country village: a cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s where the Medieval castle once stood. Today, the estate boasts a total surface area of 650 hectares, of which 117 are devoted to specialized vineyards, divided between five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, and Caggio, located at between 230 and 500 meters above sea level and exposed to the south and southwest. of limestone and sandstone boulders and is very rocky, so much so that Fonterutoli wine is also known as “vino dei sassi,” or rock wine. Because of its location, Fonterutoli is also the ideal point of departure for cultural and panoramic tours of the most unspoiled areas of the Chianti region.

The experience we recommend at this winery is the Winemaker for a Day wine class, which gives you a chance to learn how to taste a wine and discover its characteristics. The experience goes beyond a simple class though as you will work side by side with the resident winemaker to create your own signature blend, mixing up to five different pure grapes.

You’ll take one bottle with you immediately and the rest can be shipped to you. While you’re allowing the wine to mature, you may prepare and send them a digital file with your personal label so once it’s time, the wines will be shipped complete with your custom label. The estate of 220 hectares has remained unchanged within its borders for over 1000 years.
