It forms an interesti~g pattern through each line, from genera tion to generation until with the addition of its newest members we reach in this year, (1939) the tenth generation of Dares. You will see that it is by no means a complete genealogy. If it were possible to procure the names of all living members of this family we would have a volume many times the size of this book, •but the time involved would delay its publication in definitely and so in order to preserve data which we of the pres ent generation could not .assemble had it not been for those who have gone before, we are printing all available information in this volume for you and for posterity. Sept. 25th, 1939. WILLIAM HARRY MONTGOMERY NELLIE LEDDON MONTGOMERY Address : 64 Grand Ave., Poughkeepsie, N. Y. 5 :\'1ISS ELIZABETH CRAIG D.ARE Elizabeth C. DARE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We wish to give credit for the compiling of much of the material of this book to lV[iss Elizabeth C. Dare, of Philadelphia, Pa., and to Mr. Frank T. Dare, of Pitman, N. J. It represents years of patient toil and research. Data has been gathered, bit by bit, from deeds, court and church records, family Bibles, tombstones, and early histories of Salem and Cumberland Coun ties, in the State of New Jersey. Much early data was collected some years ago by Dr. Charles Dare of Shiloh, N. J ., in his book entitled •· History of the Dare Family." This has proved invaluable as has also a history of the Robert line written by Mrs. Clara Ettinger, of Chicago, Ill., in 1901. Several genealogists, who are members of the Dare family, have also given much valuable information; among whom are lvir. Charles Sheppard of Bridgeton, N. J., and Mr. Stanley Craig, of Merchantville, N. J. Mr. Craig has con1piled several books on early n1arriages and other genealogical data of Salem County. Charles Sheppard was one of the authors of Cushing and Shep pard's History of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland Counties. We were surprised and delighted to discover shortly before publication of this volume, that the line of Elizabeth (3) daughter of William Dare 2nd had been compiled son1e years before by l\1rs. Josie Powell Stone of St. Peter, Minn. We wish to thank Mrs. Stone for giving us permission to use this data. 7 LYME Lyme, England, the home of Captain William Dare, was a borough Market town on the English Channel, in the southern part of the Island, 144 miles southwest of London. The coast was wild and rocky and in the days of the Plantagenets a pier of huge stones was built out into the open sea to form a harbor. It was called the Cobb. Vessels belonging to Lyme crossed the channel fortnightly stopping at London and other ports. This was an important means of transportation for many years as roads were poor and there were no railroads. The weaving of cloth, silk and lace by hand looms was done in the town. After the invention of looms run by steam power and the coming of steel ships too large for the harbor, the town became a seashore resort and still accommodates many summer visitors who are looking for a beautiful place to enjoy quiet and rest. In the church at Lyme Regis, a column on the south side of the nave bears the Borough Arms and the initials of William Dare.. As he was Mayor in 1491, 1500 and 1506 this inscription was probably made during this time in commemoration of the finishing of the church. Macaulay's History of England, Vol. I., p. 170, Pub. 1859 by E. H. Butler Co., Phila., Pa. For a number of years, Mr. Frank T. Dare has -been in cor respondence with the Historian of Lyme, Mr. Cyril Wanklyn. (From a document in Lymes Town Hall.) 9 CAPTAIN WILLIAM DARE The progenitor of the Dare family in South New Jersey was Captain William Dare, who emigrated from the country of Dorset or Somerset, in the south of England at an early date, and in 1682 built the "Blue .A.nchor" tavern in Philadelphia, Pa., the head quarters of William Penn on the occasion of his landing.
