Pre & Post Tour Options for Iceaa – Ieee Apwc Cape Town PRE & POST TOUR OPTIONS FOR ICEAA – IEEE APWC CAPE TOWN 02 – 08 September 2012 ICEAA – IEEE APWC :: PRE & POST TOUR OPTIONS :: 2012 What is a Safari? Safari is a Swahili word, which is originally derived from the Arabic word for travel, safara – but basically any place where one can observe animals in their true habitats can be a safari destination. Safaris are usually conducted in adapted 4×4 vehicles. Watching animals from the security of a vehicle allows one to get closer to the animals with less danger to both animals and humans. Walking and mobile safaris are other options to view wildlife at close range, led by armed and experienced rangers and trackers. Guests usually camp out for a night in tents or semi-permanent camps. Alternatively, stay in one of the many excellent lodges in the various game reserves. Apart from land-based game viewing activities by vehicle, some lodges also offer boat trips (Botswana or Zambia) and others offer elephant back safaris. Some of the more luxurious lodges provide excellent spa facilities. And now a glimpse at the daily schedule at a game lodge (timings/programmes depend on seasons and lodges). Summer (December to March): 05h30: Wake up and morning coffee/tea will be served 06h00: Departure on morning safari 0 09h00: Return to the lodge for breakfast, after which guests have the opportunity to join a walking safari. 13h30: Lunch will be served. 16h00: Afternoon coffee/tea will be served. 16h30: Departure on afternoon safari, with a stop for Sundowners in the African bush. 19h30: Return to the lodge. 20h00: Dinner either at the boma, or at the restaurant of the lodge. • Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, South Africa
SABI SABI, SOUTH AFRICA A Hotel Story Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, South Afica Words by HOLLY TUPPEN oe was the man behind our most important mistake,” says Jacques Smit, Sabi “J Sabi’s marketing director, nodding to one of Earth Lodge’s most experienced Shangaan guides. “In the building process some wet concrete fell of a wall and mixed with the gravel and sand on the ground below. Joe picked it up and smoothed it back on. That was that. We’d found the lodge’s key ingredient – the earth itself.” Earth Lodge is the newest of four lodges on the Sabi Sabi private game reserve. The most southerly private reserve within the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, this ecosystem is a vital bufer between Kruger National Park to the east and agricultural lands to the west. Since 1993, when fences between Kruger and the surrounding private reserves came down, Sabi Sabi has been part of South Africa’s largest protected wild area. Committed to returning the land in a better state than they found it, Sabi Sabi’s owners, Hilton and Jacqui Loon, have used tourism to protect their chunk of it for the past 35 years. Each Sabi Sabi lodge is designed for a diferent type of safari-goer. I’m here to experience Earth Lodge, which is meant to reflect the future by carving a way forward, not only in its bold design, but also in its commitment to sustainability. On arrival I follow a winding underground path to the entrance. If not for the lizards and beady-eyed geckos darting out of my way, it might feel a little sombre, and not unlike a supervillain’s secret hideaway.
