In 1868, Bakunin joined the International Working Men's Association, a federation of trade unions and workers' organizations, which had sections in many European countries, as well as in Latin America. His quarrel with Karl Marx split the anarchist and Marxist wings of the revolutionary socialist movement. Socialism Is Justice. When we speak of justice, we understand thereby not the justice contained in the Codes and in Roman jurisprudence which were based to a great extent upon facts of violence achieved by force, violence consecrated by time and by the benedictions of some church or other (Christian or pagan), and as such accepted as absolute principles, from which all law is to be deduced by a process of logical reasoning no, we speak of that justice which is based solely upon human conscience, the justice to be found in the consciousness of every man even in that of children and which can be expressed in a single word: equity. This universal justice which, owing to conquests by force and religious influences, has never yet prevailed in the political or juridical or economic worlds, should become the basis of the new world. Without it there can be neither liberty, nor republic, nor prosperity, nor peace. It then must govern our resolutions in order that we work effectively toward the establishment of peace. And this justice urges us to take upon ourselves the defense of the interests of the terribly maltreated people and demand their economic and social emancipation along with political freedom. -

Marx, Bakunin, and the question of authoritarianism - David Adam Historically, Bakunin’s criticism of Marx’s “authoritarian” aims has tended to overshadow Marx’s critique of Bakunin’s “authoritarian” aims. This is in large part due to the fact that mainstream anarchism and Marxism have been polarized over a myth—that of Marx’s authoritarian statism—which they both share. Thus, the conflict in the First International is directly identified with a disagreement over anti-authoritarian principles, and Marx’s hostility toward Bakunin is said to stem from his rejection of these principles, his vanguardism, etc. Anarchism, not without justification, posits itself as the “libertarian” alternative to the “authoritarianism” of mainstream Marxism. Because of this, nothing could be easier than to see the famous conflict between the pioneering theorists of these movements—Bakunin and Marx—as a conflict between absolute liberty and authoritarianism. This essay will bring this narrative into question. It will not do this by making grand pronouncements about Anarchism and Marxism in the abstract, but simply by assembling some often neglected evidence. Bakunin’s ideas about revolutionary organization lie at the heart of this investigation. Black Flag White Masks: Anti-Racism and Anarchist Historiography Süreyyya Evren1 Abstract Dominant histories of anarchism rely on a historical framework that ill fits anarchism. Mainstream anarchist historiography is not only blind to non-Western elements of historical anarchism, it also misses the very nature of fin de siècle world radicalism and the contexts in which activists and movements flourished. Instead of being interested in the network of (anarchist) radicalism (worldwide), political historiography has built a linear narrative which begins from a particular geographical and cultural framework, driven by the great ideas of a few father figures and marked by decisive moments that subsequently frame the historical compart- mentalization of the past. Today, colonialism/anti-colonialism and imperialism/anti-imperialism both hold a secondary place in contemporary anarchist studies. This is strange considering the importance of these issues in world political history. And the neglect allows us to speculate on the ways in which the priorities might change if Eurocentric anarchist histories were challenged. This piece aims to discuss Eurocentrism imposed upon the anarchist past in the form of histories of anarchism. What would be the consequences of one such attempt, and how can we reimagine the anarchist past after such a critique? Introduction Black Flag White Masks refers to the famous Frantz Fanon book, Black Skin White Masks, a classic in anti-colonial studies, and it also refers to hidden racial issues in the history of the black flag (i.e., anarchism). Could there be hidden ethnic hierarchies in the main logic of anarchism's histories? The huge difference between the anarchist past and the histories of anarchism creates the gap here. -

The Mysteries of Capital Michael Denning ABSTRACT “The Mysteries of Capital” argues that Marx’s Capital should be read as an imaginative work of the socialist tradition, and must be re-situated historically and generically. It then out- lines a framework for such a reading, arguing that Capital is, like Moby-Dick, a modern epic, less a linear, heroic narrative than a sprawling encyclopedia and anatomy of the world, consist- ing of five different books, each of which has generated a distinct form of Marxist thought. This essay grows out of my attempt to write an introduction to Marx’s Capital for readers in Capital reading groups, which have long been part of the infrastruc- ture of a socialist-movement culture. Many of the best introductions to Capital of the last generation have been written by economists for young economists: I am thinking of such fine books as Duncan Foley’s Understanding Capital (1986) and John Weeks’s Capital and Exploitation (1981). But the students and activists in Capital groups are usually not economists, and the quarrels among economists, Marxist and otherwise, often don’t speak to one’s experience of reading Capital. The question quickly arises: how should one read Capital? One famous Capital reading group rightly said that there were no “innocent” readings of Capital, but their own solution—“we read Capital as philosophers” (Althusser and Balibar 14)—does not work for all. I would like to suggest that Capital is best read not as a work of Marxist economics, or even of the Marxist critique of political economy, but as one of the major imaginative works of the socialist tradition. -

The first woman to stake her life in this cause was Kanno Sugako (1881-191 I). Born in Osaka, Kanno’s early life was marked by difficulty and struggle, Her father’s fairly successful small mining business had be- gun to falter by the time she was eight or nine. Furthermore, Kanno’s mother died when she was ten. Her father remarried, but unfortunately, her stepmother turned out to be the proverbial sadistic stepmother, who was convinced that Kanno was cunning and evil because she was born in the year of the serpent (&ano~o-no-mi). -

Cutler Biographies typically rely more heavily upon personal documents than do other kinds of history, but subtleties in the use of such documents for psychological interpretation have long been recognized as pitfalls for misinterpretation even when contemporaries are the subject of study. Psychobiography is most persuasive and successful when its hypotheses and interpretations weave together the individual with broader social phenomena and unify these two levels of analysis with any necessary intermediate levels. However, in practice psychobiography rarely connects the individual with phenomena of a social-psychological scale.1 Psychobiography is probably the only field of historical study more problematic than psychohistory in general, principally because questions of interpretation are so much more difficult. -

Covey’s suggested habits, expounded in his books, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” and “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to greatness”, following the most eminent Russian physiologist and psychologist I. P. Pavlov’s theory of classical behaviourism. Stephen R. Covey’s thought provoking and trend breaking book: “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” suggests seven habits and paradigms to become highly effective personality. He introduced the eighth habit in his innovative and challenging book “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.” Therefore, his suggested eight habits, and paradigms, which are based on I. P. Pavlov’s theory of classical behaviourism. This paper would use the popped up chunks of I. P. Pavlov’s behaviourist theory to analyse how the process of habit formation influenced the effective and great personalities of the world. Therefore, the present study will enable the readers to confront Pavlov’s classical behaviourist theory of habit formation through stimuli and responses. The readers are also expected to abandon the bad habits and adopt the good ones. These infrequent but subtle hints serve as a model of effective as well as great personality of the world.
