A Decade of Irish Literary Periodicals: 1904-1914 Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Darren Lee Dunning. April 2017 i ABSTRACT A Decade of Irish Literary Periodicals: 1904-1914 Darren Dunning The University of Liverpool April 2017 This thesis examines the history and development of three Irish periodicals, published between 1904-1914, with emphasis placed upon the literary magazine as a distinct genre and the impact of this genre on the literary and cultural landscape of Ireland at a crucial time in its nascent development. My research considers the manner in which each magazine was established and run, with an emphasis on varying editorial personalities and their impact upon each periodical. Each chapter is dedicated to an individual magazine and is structured in chronological order, with the first focused upon Dana, the second dedicated to Uladh (both published from 1904-1905) and the final chapter focused upon The Irish Review (1911-1914). The aim is to provide an assessment of those journals, acknowledging how key figures of the period made use of their pages to promote their own views and the movements that they supported. This thesis will emphasise the significance of the literary magazine as a historical resource that reveals much about the period in which it was published. Until now the history of these literary periodicals has remained largely untold, as have the events surrounding the lives of their editors and contributors during their publication years. My primary purpose is to tell these stories in the detail they deserve. -
Macdonagh, Thomas by Lawrence William White
MacDonagh, Thomas by Lawrence William White MacDonagh, Thomas (1878–1916), teacher, writer, and republican revolutionary, was born 1 February 1878 in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary, third child and eldest son among six surviving children (four sons and two daughters; three elder children had died in infancy) of Joseph MacDonagh (1834–94), native of Co. Roscommon, and Mary MacDonagh (née Parker), Dublin native of English parentage (her father had moved to Dublin to become compositor in Greek for Trinity College Press); both were national school teachers. His father (who claimed descent from the medieval Mac Donnchadha clan of Ballymote castle, Co. Sligo), the son of a small farmer, received through the efforts of his widowed mother and her brother, a parish priest, teacher training in Dublin. He met and married MacDonagh's mother while both were teaching in Cloghan, Co. Offaly; they were transferred to Cloughjordan the year before MacDonagh's birth. Both parents were averse to political partisanship (‘great cry and little wool, like the goats of Connacht’ in his father's estimate (Parks, 1)). While his father's was a jovial, kindly, indulgent personality, MacDonagh received from his mother (a convert before marriage from unitarianism to Roman catholicism) deep interests in music and literature, and a grave sense of high moral purpose. Education and early career After primary education under his father in Cloughjordan, MacDonagh studied under the Holy Ghost fathers at Rockwell College, Cashel, Co. Tipperary (1892–6), where in 1894 he entered the order's junior scholasticate to prepare for the catholic priesthood. Joining the college faculty as teacher of English, French, and Latin literature (1896–1901), after experiencing a profound crisis of faith he abandoned his vocation for the priesthood for a career as teacher and writer. -

They derive from the Dublin and Cork Studios. In Dublin, the creators were the General Features Office; the Scriptwriters’ Office; Children’s Department; the Music Department. Administrative History 1. Radió Éireann – Raidió Teilifís Éireann On 26 March 1924, a Special Committee on Wireless Broadcasting filed their final report with the government of the Irish Free State, recommending that ‘Broadcasting should be a State service purely’, with its installation and management to be in the hands of the Postal Ministry. ('Wireless Broadcasting Report – final Report of Special Committee', par.6.) The Wireless Telegraphy Act was not passed by the Dáil until November 1926, but in the meantime the ‘Irish Free State Broadcasting Service’ had begun broadcasting on 1 January 1926, as a section of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. -

A Gentle Childhood in Dublin Kathleen King (Anastasia Lelia Kathleen Murphy) was born on 5th July 1893 to well-to-do Dublin merchant, Laurence Murphy and his wife, Brigid (née Monahan) from Longford. She had one brother Paddy who was born in 1890 and a younger sister Eileen, born in 1895. The character reference below demonstrates the high regard in which they were held by the Principal, Mother Eucharia Ryan. Kathleen’s results were consistently high and she won numerous national prizes in examinations held by the Intermediate Education Board for Ireland. The result below shows that Kathleen was awarded 3rd place in Ireland that year with a 1st class exhibition and a prize of £25. -
