Smoking Presentation Trends in U.S. Movies 1991-2008 Kori Titus, MBA Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PHD BREATHE CALIFORNIA of SACRAMENTO-EMIGRANT TRAILS and the CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco, California February 2009 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tobacco presentations in commercial motion pictures are of serious public health concern because cumulative exposure to this imagery causes large numbers of adolescents to start smoking.1 An estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation is attributed to this exposure.2,3 To examine trends in the number of tobacco presentations over time, by Motion Picture Association of America age-classification and North American distributor, we surveyed a large sample of films released to U.S. theaters 1991-2008 to trace the proportion of smoking and smokefree films, incidence of tobacco imagery in films with smoking, tobacco impressions (incidents times paid admissions) delivered to theater audiences, and tobacco brand display. Policy advocacy aimed at reducing adolescent exposure to tobacco in youth-rated (G, PG and PG13) films by modernizing the rating system to rate smoking movies R, with some specific exceptions,4 has been directed at the major studio distributors and their parent corporations since 2001. Some companies have adopted public stances that reflect growing public concern over the issue of smoking in youth-rated films. We pay particular attention to smoking trends in youth-rated films over recent years. KEY FINDINGS Analysis of 1,769 films released over the past 18 years established that: • Most youth exposure to on-screen smoking occurs in youth-rated films, par- ticularly PG13. -
The Films of Uwe Boll Vol. 1
THE FILMS OF UWE BOLL VOL. 1 THE VIDEO GAME MOVIES (2003-2014) MAT BRADLEY-TSCHIRGI MOON BOOKS PUBLISHING CONTENTS Foreword Introduction 1. House of the Dead 2. Alone in the Dark 3. BloodRayne 4. BloodRayne 2: Deliverance 5. In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale 6. Postal 7. Far Cry 8. BloodRayne: The Third Reich 9. In the Name of the King 2: Two Worlds 10. Blubberella 11. In the Name of the King 3: The Last Mission Acknowledgments About the Author INTRODUCTION Video games have come a long way, baby. What started as an interactive abstract take on ping pong has morphed into a multi-billion dollar a year industry. When certain video game franchises started making oodles and oodles of money, Hollywood came a knockin' to adapt these beloved properties for the silver screen. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Resident Evil notwithstanding, audiences didn't flock to the cinema to watch their interactive favorites writ large. However, they sell pretty well on DVD and Blu-ray and tend to be made on a meager budget. Thus, video game movies continue to be released. No director has made more live-action video game feature films than Uwe Boll. Holding a PhD in Literature from The University of Siegen, Dr. Boll has shot nearly a dozen of these pictures. It should be noted his full filmography is quite varied and not just limited to video game adaptations; his other movies are often dramas with political elements and shall be covered in two more forthcoming volumes: The Films of Uwe Boll Vol. -

New Screen Order: How Video Games Are Changing Cinema Interiority
www.thecine-files.com FEATURED SCHOLARSHIP New Screen Order: How Video Games Are Changing Cinema Interiority David Sedman and Randy Clark “Final Fantasy is nothing more than an extravagant video game in which characters fix things, fly things, gather things and shoot things . .(A)fter a while, you want to play it, not just watch it.” -- Robert Wilonsky, film critic1 When Tron was released in 1982, it was quickly recognized as the first significant interface between a motion picture and a video game. In Tron, the main character, Kevin Flynn, is transported from a realistic setting to a video game setting. Once Flynn becomes a part of the video game interface, the audience’s frame of reference becomes the gamespace. While most critics focused on the visual aspects of Tron—Variety for example, calls it “loaded with visual delights but fall(ing) way short of the mark in story and viewer involvement”—the direct translation of the video game characteristics to the movie theater screen would prove to be the more significant trend in the defining of space in American popular film.2 The spatial relationships of the characters in Tron, the camera’s point of view, and the actor’s relationship to the environment are key elements that define the film’s interiority. In the 28 years between the original Tron and its sequel, Tron: Legacy, a very profound transformation came to the movie industry as films created with character- generated imagery (CGI) and having game-like sequences became commonplace. This article discusses how the influences of gaming have transformed character motivations and production processes within cinema. -

Both engage extensively in visuals and audio, both can indulge in speculative fiction, and there is a healthy amount of sharing of inspiration and content.
