The UMass Lowell Basketball booster club, officially known as the 6th Man Club, plays a significant and meaningful role in the River Hawk basketball pro- gram. From monetary donations to family events, guest speakers and cheering sections, the presence of the 6th Man Club is felt throughout the season. The 6th Man Club kicked off when the members of the 1988 National Championship Team brought a check to the 2008 UMass Lowell Golf Tournament to begin the fundraising efforts under Herenda’s reign. “The 6th Man Club is so vital to our program in so many ways,” said Herenda. “When I first got the job, the ’88 team presented me a check for $5,000 and it was extremely emotional and important to me. Our alums, fans and friends care so much about our program and the student-athletes.” Now Herenda, his staff and team are looking to grow the club even more. Its roots are growing deeper into the community and stretch beyond former River Hawk basketball players and well into the city of Lowell. “After being the head coach for a couple of years, I tried to reach out not only to our alums, but also to the people of Lowell,” he said. “I have gotten a tremendous response from so many and I think when people see we appreciate all they do, they step up and support what this program stands for.” The hard work, dedication and time put in by the student-athletes and staff is echoed by the support given by members of the 6th Man Club. Members often come to events like pre-game receptions, the Blue/Red Scrimmage and hit the road to follow the River Hawks on their quest for a trip to the NCAA Tournament. More than simply just a booster club, members of the 6th Man Club become an integral part of the extended family of the UMass Lowell Men’s Basketball program and help to enhance the overall experience of all the student-athletes that are a part of the men’s basketball team at UMass Lowell. “We have had nearly 100 people come in and talk to our team,” Herenda said. “It is very educational for our players and it bridges the gap from generation to generation. It harbors a strong family atmosphere. We have had contributions from Lowell to California, Russia to Europe. It is truly amazing how far-reaching our UMass Lowell network has expanded.” 12 R I V E R H A W K BASKETBALL River hawks in the community River Hawks in the Community: Donating Time and Selves, Men’s Basketball Gives Back to Greater Lowell

Aside from their determination on the court and hard work in the classroom, the River Hawks’ basketball team also takes a significant amount of time to give back to the community. The team and staff has made it a priority of theirs to spend as much time as they can getting out into the community to donate time, fundraise money and invite others to come out to their games. “Reaching out into our local community has been important to me from day one,” Herenda said. “I was taught as a young boy to always give back and we have tried hard to do that here in Lowell.” The players seem to get as much out of the experience as those they are helping and realize the importance of helping those less fortunate. The time they spend giving back to the greater Lowell community enriches their experience at the University, tenfold. “Our players are awesome at [giving back],” Herenda said. “Every time they go out and help in the community, they grow as citizens and as people.” The organizations the team works most with include the Lowell Boys and Girls Club, Saints’ Medical Center and the Lowell Transitional Center. From shooting around with kids, helping to staff the Saints’ Fall Cancer Walk or assisting the staff at the Transi- tional Center, they are always reaching out to different groups in the area and doing their best to help. “More often than not, our program gets more out of helping others than the people we are trying to help,” Herenda said. “I truly believe that community service is an obligation of ours. To give back to the people that need it in Lowell is extremely important to me and every single person in our program.”

The Northeast-10 Conference

Currently in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has estab- lished itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. The NE-10 is now the second largest Division II conference in the country and is comprised of 15 institutions: six from the Commonwealth of Massa- chusetts, three each from New York and New Hampshire, and one each from Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the charter members were American International College, Assumption College, Bentley College, Bryant College, the University of Hartford, Springfield Col- lege and Stonehill College. Saint Anselm was admitted to the conference in 1981 and Mer- rimack joined the fold in 1984, replacing Hartford, now a Division I institution. The conference expanded from eight to 10 teams with the addition of Quinnipiac and Saint Michael’s in 1987. Springfield left the conference for Division III following the completion of the 1994-95 academic year. The conference returned to 10 teams in 1996-97 with the addition of Le Moyne College and then expanded to 11 in 1997-98 with the inclusion of Pace Univer- sity. In 1998-99, the conference reverted to 10 schools when Quin- nipiac shifted its programs to Division I. Former Coach Don Doucette hoisted by assistant The NE-10 expanded to 15 institutions beginning with the coach John Paganetti (‘84, left) and standout Gavin 2000-01 academic year.
