Romans 7 and Sanctification by Andy Woods Introduction This article will argue that one’s understanding of practical sanctification is profoundly impacted by how one views the “I” in Romans 7:7-25. Specifically, the article will argue that the “I” in Romans 7 is Paul, and in verses 14-25 Paul is reflecting upon his post conversion experience. In addition, the article will maintain that a post conversion view of Romans 7:14-25 leads to a dual nature view of the believer. This view teaches that although the believer has a new nature that he received at conversion, his Adamic nature still exists within him and continues to tempt him to return to his former sinful lifestyle throughout the course of this life. Finally, the article will contend that viewing believers through the lenses of the dual nature view shapes one’s understanding of practical sanctification in several important ways. Who is the Speaker in Romans 7:7-25? Three options for the speaker in Romans 7:7-25 have been proposed.1 First, some have proposed the theory of the Rhetorical “I”. According to this view, the pronoun “I” in Romans 7:7-25 serves as a literary device that depicts all of humanity. Thus, the “I” is not autobiographical but rather represents the experience of everyone. Second, others have proposed the theory of the Representative “I”. According to this view, the pronoun “I” in Romans 7:7-25 depicts the life experience of a representative figure that is typical of every person including the speaker. For example, the “I” of Romans 7:7-25 could represent the experience of Adam at the time of the fall. -

ROMANS STUDY GUIDE Christ Alone! Romans 10:1-21 Brief Comments Introducton: In Romans 9, Paul explained that God had not failed the naton of Israel. Highlightng individuals from their Jewish history, Paul proclaimed that God has sovereignly chosen/elected Israel to bring renewal to the world. God’s people were called to be a light to the Gentles and a naton of priests to mediate God’s presence to the natons. It was Israel who failed—not God. Israel was not fulflling its destny. Now writng in the middle of the frst-century to the church in Rome, the Jewish naton was in a precarious positon. Jesus had come, the gospel was being proclaimed, and many people (especially Gentles) were trustng Christ to save them from their sins. The majority of the Jews, however, rejected Jesus as the Messiah and were not believing in the truth of the gospel. “How can we be saved?” This is the queston that Romans 10 is answering. Paul’s answer is “Christ alone.” Romans 10 may be outlined with three points: Christ alone is our righteousness (10:1-4), faith in Christ alone saves us (10:5-13), and Christ alone must be proclaimed (10:14-21). Christ Alone is Our Righteousness (10:1-4) 10:1-4: Paul’s “desire and prayer” is for his people to “be saved.” (10:1; cf. 9:1-5) He longs for them to come to faith. Perhaps one can say that he’s “groaning” for their salvaton. Concerning our family members and friends who don’t know the Lord, Paul provides a good example to follow. -

GETTING ROMANS TO THE RIGHT ROMANS: PHOEBE AND THE DELIVERY OF PAUL’S LETTER Allan Chapple Summary How did Romans reach the people for whom it was intended? There is widespread agreement that Phoebe was the bearer of the letter (Rom. 16:1-2), but little investigation of or agreement about the exact nature of her responsibilities. By exploring the data available to us, especially tha found in Romans 16, this essay provides a reconstruction of the events surrounding the transport and delivery of the letter to the Roman Christians. In particular, it proposes the following: Phoebe conveyed the letter to Rome, probably by sea; the church in Rome at this time consisted of house-churches; Phoebe was to deliver the letter first to Prisca and Aquila and their house-church; Prisca and Aquila were to convene an assembly of the whole Christian community, the first for some time, at which Romans was to be received and read; Prisca and Aquila were to be asked to arrange for copies of Romans to be made; Phoebe was to deliver these copies to other house-churches; and Phoebe was to read Romans in the way that Paul had coached her at each of the gatherings to which she took it. 1. Reading The Greek New Testament www.misselbrook.org.uk/ Romans Introduction to Paul's Letter to the Romans Paul followed up his second letter to the Corinthians1 with a personal visit to Corinth where he stayed for some months (Acts 20:2). It was towards the end of this period that Paul appears to have written this letter to the Christians at Rome. Although he had never visited the church, Paul seems to have known many of the members whom he greets by name in chapter 16. Many of these Christians knew and had worked with Paul: the whole church was probably familiar with his ministry. Paul wrote to the Christians at Rome because he hoped that he might soon be able to visit them in passing on his way to Spain. He hopes that they may be able to help him on his way and support him in this new area of ministry (Rom 15:23-29). The origin and character of the church at Rome We have no clear information concerning the origins of the church at Rome. Clearly it was not founded by Paul, neither would it seem likely that it had been founded by another apostle or person of apostolic standing – Paul is sensitive about building on another person's labours and yet seems keen to forge closer links with the church at Rome. It is possible that the church at Rome could have its origins in Peter's preaching on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2 tells us that there were, gathered at Jerusalem, Jews and converts to Judaism from every part of the Mediterranean world, including some from Rome (Acts 2:10). -

There are nearly 100 evangelical seminaries of various denominations represented within the council and many continue to use the ITS courses to supplement their curriculum. The lecturers were selected primarily by the Deans’ Council as highly recognized scholars in their particular fields of study. Course Description The book of Romans is crucial to the understanding of salvation and sanctification. In this course,you will explore the rich truths of justification and other significant topics by completing an exegetical and theological study of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans in the Greek text. A Comparison of Romans 10:9 A Comparison of Romans 10:9 with Deuteronomy 30 Paul Baumeister, PhD September 21, 2019 A Comparison of Romans 10:9 A Comparison of Romans 10:9 with Deuteronomy 30 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom. 10:9). Romans 10:9 has been oftentimes misunderstood, twisted, or mistranslated. Understanding a scripture in its context is vital for understanding the original meaning of the text. This paper delves into the true themes and teachings of the tenth chapter of the Book of Romans. It is most definitely not teaching that a simple confession of one’s belief in Jesus provides the sinner with salvation. This would be at odds with many New Testament scriptures that state that salvation is attained by being born of the water and born of the Spirit (Jn. 3:3-5; Acts 2:38; Titus 3:5). To understand the true meaning of the text, a look into the verses at the beginning of the chapter provides the theme and topic to which the Apostle Paul is addressing. The topic is Israel’s rejection of Jesus as its Messiah. Paul says, “Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved” (vs. 1). He states that they have without knowledge tried to establish their own righteousness instead of taking on the righteousness that is found in Jesus Christ (Vs 2). -

DIG DEEP Bible Study, Pastor David Cooper, Riches In Romans #7 THE CURE FOR JUDGMENT One of the easiest commands Jesus gave us is one of the most difficult to keep – “Do no judge or you too will be judged” (Matt 7:1). The apostle Paul was a very religious man. When he met Christ, discovered that religion couldn’t save him from sin only Jesus could save him. He needed redemption not religion. Religion can make us judgmental but grace makes us merciful. 1. RESIGN YOUR POSITION AS JUDGE: “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgement do the same things. Now we know that God's judgement against those who do such things is based on truth . So when you, a mere man, pass judgement on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgement?” (Romans 2:1-3) 1. Judgmental people are guilty: You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgement on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgement do the same things. Now we know that God's judgement against those who do such things is based on truth. (Romans 2:1-2). 2. We have “no excuse” to judge because we are sinners saved by grace – we do the same things we judge others for doing. 3. God’s judgement is based on truth but ours is based on speculation. -

Roman Chapter 10 Romans 10:1 "Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved." We have been saying over and over in these lessons how important it was to Paul that the Jewish people would accept Jesus as their Savior. God actually called Paul to the Gentiles, but he could not help but desire his own people to come to Jesus Christ. We see that the Lord Jesus desired them to be saved as well as Paul, but they would not. Luke 13:34 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen [doth gather] her brood under [her] wings, and ye would not!" Paul’s calling as an apostle to the Gentiles did not diminish his continual entreaties to God for Israel to be saved, or his own evangelistic efforts toward Jews. Romans 10:2 "For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge." It is so strange to me that the people who were supposed to know the Word of God the best did not truly understand what that Word was saying, and they rejected their promised Messiah. The Scripture above says that it was for lack of knowledge. Perhaps, it was for lack of understanding what they were reading. Hosea 4:6 "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." The Jews indeed had “zeal of God” which was demonstrated by their legalistic conformity to the law and their fierce opposition to Judaism’s opponents.
