Romans 7 and Sanctification by Andy Woods Introduction This article will argue that one’s understanding of practical sanctification is profoundly impacted by how one views the “I” in Romans 7:7-25. Specifically, the article will argue that the “I” in Romans 7 is Paul, and in verses 14-25 Paul is reflecting upon his post conversion experience. In addition, the article will maintain that a post conversion view of Romans 7:14-25 leads to a dual nature view of the believer. This view teaches that although the believer has a new nature that he received at conversion, his Adamic nature still exists within him and continues to tempt him to return to his former sinful lifestyle throughout the course of this life. Finally, the article will contend that viewing believers through the lenses of the dual nature view shapes one’s understanding of practical sanctification in several important ways. Who is the Speaker in Romans 7:7-25? Three options for the speaker in Romans 7:7-25 have been proposed.1 First, some have proposed the theory of the Rhetorical “I”. According to this view, the pronoun “I” in Romans 7:7-25 serves as a literary device that depicts all of humanity. Thus, the “I” is not autobiographical but rather represents the experience of everyone. Second, others have proposed the theory of the Representative “I”. According to this view, the pronoun “I” in Romans 7:7-25 depicts the life experience of a representative figure that is typical of every person including the speaker. For example, the “I” of Romans 7:7-25 could represent the experience of Adam at the time of the fall. -

Coleman Summary Insufficient attention has been given to the meaning of the four distinctive terms φόρος τέλος φόβος used in Romans 13:7: ‘tribute’ ( ), ‘tax’ ( ), ‘reverence’ ( ), and τιμή ‘honour’ ( ). This article will discuss these terms in relation to the Graeco- Roman semantic field of political obligation, dividing them into the categories of ‘tangible’ obligations (tribute and tax) and ‘intangible’ obligations (reverence and honour). We will also examine Romans 13:7 in light of the social context of the Neronean era, in which there was an increasing burden of taxation and the introduction of legal penalties for failure to show due reverence and honour to those in authority. I. Introduction Commentators have glossed over the significance of the four terms which Paul uses in Romans 13:7—terms which describe the obligations that Christians have toward civic authorities: ‘tribute’ φόρος τέλος φόβος τιμή ( ), ‘tax’ ( ), ‘reverence’ ( ), and ‘honour’ ( ). For example, in his pre-war commentary on Romans, R.C.H. Lenski commented, in regard to Romans 13:7, that there was no unique significance in Paul’s use of these terms.1 Lenski argued that the apostle’s ‘great positive principles… apply to all times, to us as well as to the Romans, to our relation to our secular government as well as to their relation to theirs’.2 C.E.B. Cranfield, likewise, discounted the particular relevance which Paul’s words may have had for the Roman Christians, but for different reasons. -

Andrew Kinoti Vermilion July 23, 2017 Experiencing the Glory of God Genesis 28:10–19a Romans 8:12–25 The Hebrew word for glory is Kabod, usually used in connection with God. Its basic meaning is “weight” or “importance.” It is the term that has been used to describe the importance or the significance of God when encountered by the humans. Mainly the term is used when God reveals God-self to humans eliciting a complete sense of awe and excitement. When God reveals the divine-self, there is a sense of glow that that accompanies it, bringing with it a spontaneous realization of the divine presence. It is this sense of glow that may have led English to translate this term as glory. That means an extra-ordinary shining that can only be majestically divine. In Old Testament we see several examples where the glory of God shines upon specific people. Patriarchs of Israel (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) all had those instances where they experienced the presence of God in their own specific ways. We also see God revealing the Divine-self to Moses in the burning bush experience, as he is sent to redeem the Israelites from Egypt. It is the same glory of God that follows the Israelites in their exodus journey in a form of “cloud of fire.” In these examples, among many others, we see God’s glory shining upon a particular person with immediate realization of the divine experience. When these individuals experience the glory of God they react in a way of worship. -

Even though we have been created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) Scriptures states that we all have sinned and fallen short of His glory (Romans 3:23). I can’t help but wonder if we were in the garden of Eden walking and talking with God would we not defiantly partake of the same tree because of our overwhelming desire to be like God, knowing both good and evil (Genesis 3:5)? Truthfully we are Adam and Eve’s children especially when it comes to our desire to sin! If the Biblical story ended with Eden, humanity would have been left with no hope, just a mere memory of what it was like to know God intimately. As it is there is hope for God has provided the means for us to truly know Him by following His Son Jesus Christ. For us to truly want to follow Jesus we must first be passionate about what it cost God to have us included in His redemption story. Despite our love for the world (1 John 2:15) and our continued desire to do as the pagans (1 Peter 4:3), God still loved us. The cost of us being His disciple was the death of God’s one and only Son. The cost for God was enormous but there are costs for us as well. By letting self die, taking up our crosses and follow Jesus Christ, we as His ambassadors are invited into His redemption story as royal priests (1 Peter 2:9)! While the command to be holy seems impossible (1 Peter 1:16), the Advocate teaches and empowers us to be genuine disciples of Christ. -

Exum (#1168) Four Lakes Church oF Christ Madison, Wisconsin June 3, 2012 This morning I would like for us to look together at a comment that was turned in by one of our members several months ago – a request for more information concerning what the Bible has to say about handling differences of opinion as opposed to handling scriptural differences. As we study how to handle differences of faith and opinion, I would ask that we look together at a passage in the New Testament book of Romans – Romans 14-15 (p. 1777). Certainly this passage in the book of Romans is a passage that has been terribly misunderstood (and even abused) for many, many years. The passage was written by the apostle Paul to a congregation made up of both Jews and Gentiles, and it was written during a time when many of the new converts were coming right out of the Jewish faith, a time when the early Christians were really struggling to stay united in spite of some widely diverse backgrounds. We might say, then, that the book was written during a time of transition, a time when Gentiles (having previously been under the Law of the Heart) were merging with Jews (having previously been under the Law of Moses), a time when these two groups were merging into one large Christian family, both being governed by the Law of Christ. As you can imagine, there was some tension between those two groups, and nowhere was that tension greater than in the ancient city of Rome. -

GETTING ROMANS TO THE RIGHT ROMANS: PHOEBE AND THE DELIVERY OF PAUL’S LETTER Allan Chapple Summary How did Romans reach the people for whom it was intended? There is widespread agreement that Phoebe was the bearer of the letter (Rom. 16:1-2), but little investigation of or agreement about the exact nature of her responsibilities. By exploring the data available to us, especially tha found in Romans 16, this essay provides a reconstruction of the events surrounding the transport and delivery of the letter to the Roman Christians. In particular, it proposes the following: Phoebe conveyed the letter to Rome, probably by sea; the church in Rome at this time consisted of house-churches; Phoebe was to deliver the letter first to Prisca and Aquila and their house-church; Prisca and Aquila were to convene an assembly of the whole Christian community, the first for some time, at which Romans was to be received and read; Prisca and Aquila were to be asked to arrange for copies of Romans to be made; Phoebe was to deliver these copies to other house-churches; and Phoebe was to read Romans in the way that Paul had coached her at each of the gatherings to which she took it. 1. In Romans 14:17, the kingdom of God refers to the church. The most Important thIng to be said about the kIngdom of God Is that It Is God’s kingdom – It Is the realm In whIch God rules. FIrst we must see that GOD RULES IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN (Daniel 4:17). John 18:36. Because the kIngdom of our Lord Is not of thIs world, the church should not contend for cIvIl and polItical power. Yet hIstory Is full of sad attempts by the church to do thIs very thIng. We can see from hIstory that the kIngdoms of men come and go but God’s kIngdom Is forever as Luther wrote In “A Mighty Fortress.” The kIngdom of God Is GOD’S KINGDOM. God rules and Is over and above any kIngdom of man and Is InfInItely superIor to them. The kingdoms of men rIse and fall but the kIngdom of God Is forever. ThIs Is the course of every human kIngdom. -
