Garner ABSTRACT Professional athletes are paid for their labor and it is often believed they have a weaker argument of exploitation. However, labor disputes in professional sports suggest athletes do not always receive fair compensation for their contributions to league and team success. Any professional athlete, regardless of their race, may claim to endure unjust wages relative to their fellow athlete peers, yet Black professional athletes’ history of exploitation inspires greater concerns. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to explore and trace the historical development of basketball in the United States (US) and the critical role Black males played in its growth and commercial development, and 2) to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of Black male professional basketball players concerning the role the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), collectively considered as the Players Association for this study, played in their welfare and addressing issues of exploitation. While drawing from the conceptual framework of anti-colonial thought, an exploratory case study was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with a list of Black male professional basketball players who are members of the Players Association.

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

It’s Not Me, It’s You: Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, its People by Sharieka Shontae Botex April, 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Wendy Sharer Major Department: English The origins of Hip Hop evidence that the art form was intended to provide more than music to listen to, but instead offer art that delivers messages on behalf of people who were not always listened to. My thesis offers an analysis of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content and adds to an ongoing discussion of the potential Hip Hop artists have to be effective leaders for the Black community, whose lyrical content can be used to make positive change in society, and how this ability at times can be compromised by creating content that doesn’t evidence this potential or undermines it. Along with this, my work highlights how some of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content exhibits their use of some rhetorical strategies and techniques used in social movements and their use of some African American rhetorical practices and strategies. In addition to this, I acknowledge and discuss points in scholarship that connect with my discussion of their lyrical content, or that aided me in proposing what they could consider for future lyrical content. I analyzed six Jay-Z songs and six J. Cole songs, including one song from their earliest released studio album and one from their most recently released studio album. I examined their lyrical content to document responses to the following questions: What issues and topics are discussed in the lyrics; Is money referenced? If so, how; Is there a message of uplift or unity?; What does the artist speak out against?; What lifestyles and habits are promoted?; What guidance is provided?; What problems are mentioned? and What solutions are offered? And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Paul Kantner, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, Juan Gabriel, George Michael, Sharon Jones... the list goes on. And yet, while sad 2016 became a meme of its own, there is so much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall volume is up 3% over 2016, fueled by a 76% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. Nearly 650 solo artists, groups and collaborators appeared on the Top 200 Song Consumption chart in 2016, representing over 1,200 different songs. The rapid changes in technology and distribution channels are changing the way we discover and engage with content. Reaction times are shorter and current events ERIN CRAWFORD can have an instant impact on consumption. The research puts into conversation a collection of data and research papers, interviews, movies, and music to help understand the impact that culture has on African American’s perception of love. I used scientific studies to find the quantitative statistics of African American relationships through articles like Marriage Among African Americans: What Does the Research Reveal? by Patricia Dixon, as well as qualitative studies such as A Qualitative Exploration of Why Faith Matters in African American Marriages and Families by Loren Marks. I also read articles that explore the social and economic influences on African American relationships such as You Ain’t no Denzel: African American Men’s Use of Popular Culture to Narrate and Understand Marriage and Romantic Relationships by Armon R. Perry and Courtship Season by Eleanor Alexander. I also looked at how certain movies that have importance in the Black community showcase those romanticized ideas about love and relationships like Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar, and Belly. The analysis of musical influences like Lemonade by Beyoncé, 4:44 by Jay-Z, and 4 Your Eyez Only by J. Cole contributed to this analysis and deconstruction as well. Lastly, I conducted interviews with my peers and family members from different generations to see how they have been influenced throughout their lives and their views on relationships.

Anaiah Fleury 1 4 Your Eyez Only by: J.Cole (2016) Jermaine Cole is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and record executive with his five chart-topping albums as a solo artist, nine Top 40 singles as a headliner, adn a dozen Grammy nominations J.Cole is seen as one of the most successful rappers. Each one of his albums has also gone platinum, Cole continues this streak of astounding work as he changed his approach to be more lyrical, by sharply criticizing issues in society, rather than making music for entertainment purposes. Similarly to other African American artists, J.Cole has actively stated that he protests for African Americans he has even participated in the Black Lives Matter Movement. Through the use of his music Cole has touched base on social issues in today’s society. Often addressing race, Cole has referenced the media’s influence on women, common insecurities, police brutality, racial profiling, and depression. Along with his recent release, here is a compilation of songs to which the Dreamville artist tackled such issues. Through Cole’s album,4 Your Eyez Only, he put out his point of view and brought people into his perspective on a lot of these social and political issues that go on in our world today. For Example, In his song, Immortal, Cole addresses the ongoing stereotypes the black community faces when it comes to its success. Rapping in the perspective of James (a man who was referenced a lot during the album), Cole dives into the come up of being a kingpin in the drug dealing game.
