The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been far-reaching for families: loved ones affected by the illness, financial hardships, the closure of churches, schools, and businesses and as a result, big changes in daily routines and home life. Yet, for every low, there is a high, and even this current scenario has a silver lining. Families are spending more time together and the domestic Church, has, by necessity, come alive! With countless families unable to attend Mass in person, parents brought “church” into their homes, and 52 Sundays was there to help them celebrate Sunday! The Church summons Catholic families, in all their shapes and forms, to be stable, loving, and holy environments where Christ can be encountered. 52 Sundays was created to help families reclaim the Lord’s Day for faith and family – to highlight and reflect on the Sunday Gospel, to explore the lives of the saints, to encourage and introduce a variety of structures for family prayer, and to offer suggestions for food and family fun. The response from families who have been using 52 Sundays has been overwhelmingly positive, and it is for this reason that we have decided to publish another edition of 52 Sundays for the calendar year 2021. It is our hope that this resource will continue to help families encounter Christ anew, grow in a life of discipleship, and witness to the power of his love. This year’s edition includes some new features that we hope you find helpful: × A letter to families from Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron × Family Connections: a way to use 52 Sundays in the context of a family small group setting × Featuring the Martyrs of the Church: a weekly peek into the life of a saint that has made the ultimate sacrifice and laid down his or her life for Christ 52 SUNDAYS | INTRODUCTION × Family Challenge: a way for your family to put the Gospel into action × Triduum Pages: reflections and activities for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday × Recipe Index: a listing of all the recipes that have been included in this year’s edition The domestic Church flourishes when parents understand that the purpose of parenthood is not merely to raise happy and successful adults, but to raise disciples to be bearers of the Gospel to generations yet unborn. No human community is better equipped to do this than the family, and 52 Sundays is here to help you and guide you throughout the next year. May the Lord pour out his blessings upon your family as you grow together as joyful missionary disciples in Christ. Sincerely yours in Christ, Anita Houghton Associate Director of Evangelization Archdiocese of Detroit 52 SUNDAYS | INTRODUCTION A Letter to Families December 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, As we approach the start of this new year, I am glad to see that this new edition of 52 Sundays will be available to the faithful of the Archdiocese as a tool for families seeking to reclaim the Lord’s Day. As I’m sure you’ve heard your pastors emphasize, the role of parents and grandparents in instilling the faith and nurturing the spiritual lives of your children is irreplaceable: as the first teachers of the faith for them, you are uniquely positioned to have a deep impact on your child’s life of discipleship with Christ. And on my part, I know I have heard just as often from parents that while this sounds like a fine ideal, they sometimes feel at a loss in trying to find concrete suggestions of how to do this. That is why I am happy to hear that this book has been of use to many during this last year, and to see this second edition being presented now for 2021. I hope above all that you find these ideas to be a simple and natural way for you to reveal and share with your child a bit of your own faith that you hold so dear. I have confidence that along with the time you spend with your children with the rest of the Catholic community at Sunday Mass, especially in the partaking of the Eucharist, these additional suggestions about sharing meals, prayer, and activities together will go a long way in building a stronger Catholic community in southeast Michigan: our local church fully embracing her mission to evangelize. 52 SUNDAYS | INTRODUCTION I want to thank you sincerely for your efforts. I have found the many beautiful stories of families rediscovering the importance of spending time together this past year to be incredibly uplifting and encouraging for our future as a Church. Please be assured of my own prayers and gratitude for each of you as you continue to take up with work with Jesus. Entrusting you to the intercession of St. Anne, our patroness, and Blessed Solanus Casey, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit 52 SUNDAYS | INTRODUCTION How to Use 52 Sundays At different moments in the Church's history, the family has been called the "domestic Church," a term that describes the character and mission of the Christian Family. This section shows how 52 Sundays can help parents build and strengthen the domestic Church. WHAT EXACTLY IS THE DOMESTIC CHURCH? The domestic Church is more than just enduring world around them, and by the way they show the secular culture and hoping to raise kids mercy to others and model social teaching. As who will go to Mass when they grow up. The opposed to parish programs that are geared more domestic Church does on a small scale, what the toward large groups of people, families naturally Church universal does on a large scale; it makes focus on the particular needs of each individual disciples. Therefore, the domestic Church is a member. Families also have natural structures home where family life is completely centered of accountability because of how well family on the lordship of Jesus Christ, where parents members know each other, and because of how who are disciples of Jesus, embrace their role as much time they spend together. Parents, in their leaders to make disciples of their children. The divinely appointed role as spiritual guides, have domestic Church is not so much about what a level of intimacy and trust with their children, family members do; it is a shared way of life that unlike that of a parish volunteer.

  • Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018
Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

Over 100,000 years ago … Angonce walked purposefully toward a blank stone wall in the rear of his chamber. As the tall, spare figure approached, the blocks that made up the wall softened and shifted, forming an opening. He gazed out this new window at the mountains and forest below, sadness and regret in his dark eyes. He had often stood here before, reflecting upon the beauty of Spherus Magna. From the southern desert of Bara Magna to the great northern forest, it was a place of stunning vistas and infinite opportunities for knowledge. Angonce had spent most of his life discovering its mysteries, and had hoped for many more years in the pursuit. But now it seemed that was not to be. He had run every test that he could think of, and checked and rechecked his findings. They always came out the same: Spherus Magna was doomed. How did it come to this? Angonce wondered. How did we let it get so far? He, his brothers and sisters were scholars. Their theories, discoveries and inventions had transformed this world and changed the lives of the inhabitants, the Agori, in many ways. In gratitude, they had long ago been proclaimed rulers of Spherus Magna. The Agori called them the “Great Beings.” But the business of running a world – settling disputes, managing economies, dealing with defense issues, worrying about food and equipment supplies – all of this the Great Beings found a distraction.

RUSSIAN ORTHODOXY AND WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY IN IMPERIAL RUSSIA* Christine D. Worobec On 8 November 1885, the feast day of Archangel Michael, the Abbess Taisiia had a mystical experience in the midst of a church service dedicated to the tonsuring of sisters at Leushino. The women’s religious community of Leushino had recently been ele vated to the status of a monastery.1 Conducting an all-women’s choir on that special day, the abbess became exhilarated by the beautiful refrain of the Cherubikon hymn, “Let us lay aside all earthly cares,” and envisioned Christ surrounded by angels above the iconostasis. She later wrote, “Something was happening, but what it was I am unable to tell, although I saw and heard every thing. It was not something of this world. From the beginning of the vision, I seemed to fall into ecstatic rapture Tears were stream ing down my face. I realized that everyone was looking at me in astonishment, and even fear....”2 Five years later, a newspaper columnistwitnessedasceneinachurch in the Smolensk village of Egor'-Bunakovo in which a woman began to scream in the midst of the singing of the Cherubikon.

Deeds a candidate for the degree of Master of Arts, and hereby certify that, in their opinion, it is worthy of acceptance. Professor John M. Frymire Professor Kristy Wilson-Bowers Professor Rabia Gregory I owe an enormous debt to my entire family; but my greatest debt is to my maternal grandmother Jacqueline Williams. Her love and teachings were instrumental in making me who I am today. Unfortunately, she passed away during the early stages of this project and is unable to share in the joys of its completion. My only hope is that whatever I become and whatever I accomplish is worthy of the time, treasure, and kindness she gave me. It is with the utmost joy and the most painful sorrow that I dedicate this work to her. ACKNOWLEGEMENTS At both the institutional and individual level, I have incurred more debts than I can ever hope to repay. Above all I must thank my advisor Dr. John Frymire. Dr. Frymire has been an exemplar advisor from my first day at the University of Missouri. Both in and out of the classroom, he has taught me more than I could have ever hoped when I began this journey.

  • Jeder Treu Auf Seinem Posten: German Catholics
JEDER TREU AUF SEINEM POSTEN: GERMAN CATHOLICS AND KULTURKAMPF PROTESTS by Jennifer Marie Wunn (Under the Direction of Laura Mason) ABSTRACT The Kulturkampf which erupted in the wake of Germany’s unification touched Catholics’ lives in multiple ways. Far more than just a power struggle between the Catholic Church and the new German state, the conflict became a true “struggle for culture” that reached into remote villages, affecting Catholic men, women, and children, regardless of their age, gender, or social standing, as the state arrested clerics and liberal, Protestant polemicists castigated Catholics as ignorant, anti-modern, effeminate minions of the clerical hierarchy. In response to this assault on their faith, most Catholics defended their Church and clerics; however, Catholic reactions to anti- clerical legislation were neither uniform nor clerically-controlled. Instead, Catholics’ Kulturkampf activism took many different forms, highlighting both individual Catholics’ personal agency in deciding if, when, and how to take part in the struggle as well as the diverse factors that motivated, shaped, and constrained their activism. Catholics resisted anti-clerical legislation in ways that reflected their personal lived experience; attending to the distinctions between men’s and women’s activism or those between older and younger Catholics’ participation highlights individuals’ different social and communal roles and the diverse ways in which they experienced and negotiated the dramatic transformations the new nation underwent in its first decade of existence. Investigating the patterns and distinctions in Catholics’ Kulturkampf activism illustrates how Catholics understood the Church-State conflict, making clear what various groups within the Catholic community felt was at stake in the struggle, as well as how external factors such as the hegemonic contemporary discourses surrounding gender roles, class status, age and social roles, the division of public and private, and the feminization of religion influenced their activism.
