Local residents had an opportunity to hear from two St. Johns County candidates during a gathering Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Palm Valley Barn. County Commission district 1 candidate Christian Whitehurst and sheriff candidate Rob Hardwick spoke and took questions from the audience at the event, which was sponsored by Ponte Vedra resident Deb Chapin, who called herself an advocate for the two Republicans. “We’re at a critical time,” she told those assembled at the venue. “We’re at a crossroads. We need to have a strong group on our Board of County Commissioners, our School Board, our Sheriff’s department.” Whitehurst, who is running against incumbent Jimmy County Commission candidate Christian Whitehurst speaks Photos by Shaun Ryan during a meet-and-greet event Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Sheriff candidate Rob Hardwick speaks during a meet-and- Johns in the Aug. 18 primary, devoted a portion of his Palm Valley Barn. greet event Aug. 5. presentation to his belief in “smart, managed growth.” “When I moved to this county, we were a community “I think the biggest challenge that I have, if I’m project presented to the board. of 119,000 people,” he said. “Today, we’re getting close elected, is making sure we build up the infrastructure to “When a project comes before me, if it’s not a net ben- to 270,000, and there’s no end in sight.” support growth,” he said. “Do we have the roadways? The candidates are Jimmy Johns, Christian Whitehurst and Joe McAnarney. The forum may be viewed on the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce Facebook page at facebook.com/ sjcchamber. It is a part of the Chamber’s Politics in St. Johns initiative. Audience members will be able to ask questions through moderator Mark Nighbor, Chamber Board of Directors chair. The hour-long dialogue will be recorded and posted to the Politics in St. Johns webpage at sjcchamber.com/ politics-in-st.-johns. During this unusual year, the Chamber has pivoted to a virtual platform for candidate information and the annual straw poll. “This live town hall is a new element for Politics in St. Johns,” said Bob Porter, vice president for public policy, St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce. He encouraged residents to learn more about the candidates prior to the discussion. Politics in St. Johns is the county’s largest candidate meet and greet. The Liqui Moly ProWatercross National Tour event at Vilano Beach couldn’t have fallen on a better weekend. Hurricane Isaias had just blown past and with it brought a south-to-north current that left the ocean a tranquil glassy blue — perfect for tearing up with 85 mph jet skis aiming for the title. The race kicked off on Saturday, Aug. 8, with the final professional motos sched- uled to start later that day. Amateur races were held on Sunday. This year, the national championship arrived at Vilano after being canceled in both Lake Charles, Louisiana, and West Palm Beach due to COVID-19. It was also the first time the series had been held in St. Augustine. “Hosting the national championship of the Liqui Moly ProWatercross Tour is an honor for Florida’s Historic Coast and we look forward to the competition this weekend,” said Richard Goldman, president and CEO of the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau.
