Then people could talk, the animals could talk, the trees could talk, and the rocks could talk… Beginning of the Jicarilla Apache story called ‘The Jicarilla Genesis’ as reported by James Mooney in the 1890s1 The Creator and Changer first made the world in the East. Then he slowly came westward, creating as he came. With him he brought many languages, and he gave a different one to each group of people he made… Opening of the Snohomish story called ‘Pushing up the Sky’ as told by Chief William Shelton to Ella Clark in 19532 At one time, a long time ago, when silence was, and not a word, there was nothing but Air-That’s-Black-in-All-Shadow-the-Dark-Night. It was quiet, and nothing moved. He Who First Did Everything brought Old Man Coyote in the Wind. They say it was Old Man Coyote who first thought in Air-That’s-Black-in-All-Shadow-the-Dark-Night. Thought. The one to use it first was Old Man Coyote. The wind’s spirit is where Old Man Coyote is from. Old Man Coyote thought. There was too much of nothing. Silence was, and not a word. There was nothing he could do in the silence of Air-That’s-Black-in-All- Shadow-the-Dark-Night. He howled loud… The start of ‘The Creation Story of the Crow People’ as written by Henry Real Bird in 19903 And so the world begins with the WORD. This is a familiar tradition handed down in many cultures around the world, and it expresses something that may be seen to be true for us human beings, whoever our people may be. We are not real, we are not fully conscious, we are not created as a human people or as individuals, without the word. Without language, all is subterranean, darkness or the wind for us. The power to name and describe the world, it is said by many elders, is what makes the world real for us, and us real in it. And so this essay begins with words LA 1 American Indian Baseline EssaysSUBJECT: Language Arts about the WORD and how it came to be, and concerns itself with the language arts as practiced by many American Indian cultures and individuals. In an essay, it is impossible to do more than survey some of the written works that survive from before 1492 and briefly introduce a small number of the historically notable American Indian authors and oral performers. Fortunately, a number of helpful resources have become available in the past few years that can enable teachers and students to learn more about American Indian contributions in the language arts. Persons interested in the literary traditions might well begin by consulting a useful, up-to-date series of books written or edited by Dr. A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff. These are Literatures of the American Indian (New York: Chelsea House Publishers, 1991); Redefining American Literary History (co-edited with Jerry W. Ward; New York: The Modern Language Association of America, 1990); and American Indian Literatures (New York: The Modern Language Association of America, 1990). These introduce many of the important Indian authors writing in English. To varying degrees, these books also offer an orientation to the meaning and contexts of American Indian oral traditions and written literatures. Also good, although slightly dated, is the bibliographic work by Anna Lee Stensland, Literature by and about The American Indian (Urbana: National Council of Teachers of English, 1973; the 2nd edition of 1979 updates the earlier work). This volume includes a fair amount of material about non-Indian authors who wrote about Indian cultural subjects and themes, but it distinguishes who is who quite well and does offer useful annotations about each work as to content and quality. A very important bibliographic resource that introduces writings ‘by and about’ Indian women is Rayna Green’s (Cherokee) Native American Women: A Contextual Bibliography (Bloomington: University of Indiana Press, 1983). Unfortunately out of print, the reader will find that Green’s book mixes literary works with histories, LA 2 American Indian Baseline EssaysSUBJECT: Language Arts sociological treatises, psychological and anthropological studies, and other subjects in the social sciences. Green’s brief annotations do much to help readers readily identify the books and authors worth consulting. Two other important works on American Indian women’s literature and traditions are Paula Gunn Allen’s (Lakota/Laguna Pueblo) The Sacred Hoop (Boston: Beacon Press, 1986) and her Spider Woman’s Granddaughters (Boston: Beacon Press, 1989). A similarly valuable reference introduction to many of the Native writers of Canada is Penny Petrone’s Native Literature in Canada: From the Oral Tradition to the Present (Toronto: Oxford University Press,

  • Introduction Since Time Immemorial, Human Beings Have Used Narrative
    Chapter 1 – Introduction Since time immemorial, human beings have used narrative to help us make sense of our experience of life. From the fireside to the theatre, from the television and silver screen to the more recent manifestations of the virtual world, we have used storytelling as a means of providing structure, order, and coherence to what can otherwise appear an overwhelming infinity of random, unrelated events. In ordering the perceived chaos of the world around us into a structure we can grasp, narrative provides insight and understanding not only of events themselves, but on a more fundamental level, of the very essence of what it means to live as a human being. As the primary means by which historical writing is organized, narrative has attracted a large body of historians and philosophers who have grappled with its impact on our understanding of the past. Underlying their work is the tension between historical writing as a reflection of what took place in the past, and the essence of narrative as a creative, imaginative act. The very structure of Aristotelian narrative, with its causal link between events, its clearly defined beginning, middle and end, its promise of catharsis, its theme or moral, reflects an act of imagination on the part of its author. While an effective narrative first and foremost strives to draw us into its world of story and keep us there until the ending, the primary goal of historical writing, in theory at least, is to increase our understanding about the past. While these two goals are not inherently incompatible, they do not always work in concert.

  • English 233: Tradition and Renewal in American Indian Literature
    ENGLISH 233 Tradition and Renewal in American Indian Literature COURSE DESCRIPTION English 233 is an introduction to North American Indian verbal art. This course is designed to satisfy the General Education literary studies ("FSLT") requirement. FSLT courses are supposed to concentrate on textual interpretation; they are supposed to prompt you to analyze how meaning is (or, at least, may be) constructed by verbal artists and their audiences. Such courses are also supposed to give significant attention to how texts are created and received, to the historical and cultural contexts in which they are created and received, and to the relationship of texts to one another. In this course you will be doing all these things as you study both oral and written texts representative of emerging Native American literary tradition. You will be introduced to three interrelated kinds of "text": oral texts (in the form of videotapes of live traditional storytelling performances), ethnographic texts (in the form of transcriptions of the sorts of verbal artistry covered above), and "literary" texts (poetry and novels) written by Native Americans within the past 30 years that derive much of their authority from oral tradition. The primary focus of the course will be on analyzing the ways that meaning gets constructed in these oral and print texts. Additionally, in order to remain consistent with the objectives of the FSLT requirement, you will be expected to pay attention to some other matters that these particular texts raise and/or illustrate. These other concerns include (a) the shaping influence of various cultural and historical contexts in which representative Native American works are embedded; (b) the various literary techniques Native American writers use to carry storyteller-audience intersubjectivity over into print texts; and (c) the role that language plays as a generative, reality-inducing force in Native American cultural traditions.

    January 30 Introduction to the Series Roger Dunsmore Bio: Roger Dunsmore came to the University of Montana in 1963 as a freshman composition instructor in the English Department. In 1964 he also began to teach half- time in the Humanities Program. He taught his first course in American Indian Literature, Indian Autobiographies, in 1969. In 1971 he was an originating member of the faculty group that formed the Round River Experiment in Environmental Education (1971- 74) and has taught in UM’s Wilderness and Civilization Program since 1976. He received his MFA in Creative Writing (poetry) in 1971 and his first volume of poetry.On The Road To Sleeping ChildHotsprings was published that same year. (Revised edition, 1977.) Lazslo Toth, a documentary poem on the smashing of Michelangelo’s Pieta was published in 1979. His second full length volume of poems,Bloodhouse, 1987, was selected by the Yellowstone Art Center, Billings, MX for their Regional Writer’s Project.. The title poem of his chapbook.The Sharp-Shinned Hawk, 1987, was nominated by the Koyukon writer, Mary TallMountain for a Pushcat Prize. He retired from full-time teaching after twenty-five years, in 1988, but continues at UM under a one- third time retiree option. During the 1988-89 academic year he was Humanities Scholar in Residence for the Arizona Humanities Council, training teachers at a large Indian high school on the Navajo Reservation. A chapbook of his reading at the International Wildlife Film Festival, The Bear Remembers, was published in 1990. Spring semester, 1991, (and again in the fall semester, 1997) he taught modern American Literature as UM’s Exchange Fellow with Shanghai International Studies University in mainland China.

Their ability to employ this management tool has been increasingly restricted by local, state and federal agencies in response to recent drought conditions and the highly flammable state of most western U.S. forests, where, for decades, fires of any magnitude have been suppressed as a matter of policy. This diminished access to cultural prescribed fire has impacted tribal access to many of the plant resources and cultural activities upon which Karuk and Yurok cultures are based.

    Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology Vol. 23, No. 2, pp. 155-178 (2001) The Creation and Flute Lure Myths: Regional Patterns in Southern California Traditions DON LAYLANDER ASM Affiliates, Inc. 543 Encinitas Blvd., Suite 114, Encinitas, GA 92024 Among the 'ways in 'which traditional narratives shed light on prehistory, regional variations in shared myths provide insights concerning cultural conservatism or fluidity and the patterns of social interaction among groups. A comparative analysis offwo myths recorded in numerous versions from southern California, 'western Arizona, and northern Baja California suggests that the region's traditional cultures 'were shaped by ongoing borro'wing and innovation to a greater extent than has sometimes been supposed, and that individual narrative motifs typically had relatively short lifespans ofafe'w centuries at most. Cultural interaction among the region's different peoples 'was evidently little constrained by disparate linguistic heritages, competing military alliances, or social and economic dissimilarities. "KTative Californian traditional narratives shed light on regional prehistory and ethnohistory in -/.\ several different ways. In some cases, they directly preserved information about past events (e.g., Laylander). More generally, they reflect past lifeways, including material culture and social organization, but in particular they mirror ideas about human nature, morality, and aesthetics which were otherwise often not well documented (e.g., Blackburn 1975). The present study considers two additional ways in which traditional narratives are revealing, based on interethnic sharing of common narrative themes and story elements. Diachronically considered, the extent to which patterns of narrative sharing crosscut the primary lines of cultural descent, as those were marked by linguistic affiliations, is a measure of the extent to which the groups' traditions were open to borrowing and innovation, rather than static and conservative.

    Native American Languages, indigenous languages of the native peoples of North, Middle, and South America. The precise number of languages originally spoken cannot be known, since many disappeared before they were documented. In North America, around 300 distinct, mutually unintelligible languages were spoken when Europeans arrived. Of those, 187 survive today, but few will continue far into the 21st century, since children are no longer learning the vast majority of these. In Middle America (Mexico and Central America) about 300 languages have been identified, of which about 140 are still spoken. South American languages have been the least studied. Around 1500 languages are known to have been spoken, but only about 350 are still in use. These, too are disappearing rapidly. Classification A major task facing scholars of Native American languages is their classification into language families. (A language family consists of all languages that have evolved from a single ancestral language, as English, German, French, Russian, Greek, Armenian, Hindi, and others have all evolved from Proto-Indo-European.) Because of the vast number of languages spoken in the Americas, and the gaps in our information about many of them, the task of classifying these languages is a challenging one. In 1891, Major John Wesley Powell proposed that the languages of North America constituted 58 independent families, mainly on the basis of superficial vocabulary resemblances. At the same time Daniel Brinton posited 80 families for South America. These two schemes form the basis of subsequent classifications. In 1929 Edward Sapir tentatively proposed grouping these families into superstocks, 6 in North America and 15 in Middle America.
