Pollinator Portraits 2017 Photos: © Martin C D Speight Text: Martin C D Speight This guide has been assembled by the National Biodiversity Data Centre Pollinator portraits 2017 These portraits are not of bees, but of flies – European hoverflies, to be precise. In the landscape, hoverflies are small and can flit by unobserved. In the portraits we see them larger than life and can examine them at leisure. You are invited to send the portraits to friends and colleagues. Not so well known as bees, hoverflies play their own, and slightly different role in pollination. They are significant pollinators of various fruit trees and some other crops, like oil-seed rape. They also pollinate many wild flowers, including rare species not normally visited by bees. Hoverflies can be found in a very wide range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. As larvae about a third of them feed on greenfly, other plant bugs, or small caterpillars and are recognised as helping to prevent epidemic greenfly infestations in cereal crops like winter wheat. Another equally large group of species is plant-feeding; these hoverflies mine leaves, stem- bases, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs or corms of herb layer plants. The rest of them grow up on a diet of bacteria, algae or other micro-organisms, usually in water or damp situations of some sort. Almost without exception, as adults hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen, visiting the flowers of a very wide range of trees, shrubs and herb layer plants, including pollen-only flowers like those of grasses, sedges, oak trees and poppies. The names of the hoverflies depicted in each portrait, along with brief notes, are included at the end of this document. -

There are around 283 species of hoverfly found in the British Isles, and 176 of these have been recorded in Birmingham and the Black Country. This atlas contains tetrad maps of all of the species recorded in our area based on records held on the EcoRecord database. The records cover the period up to the end of 2019. They truly can be considered the gardener’s fiend as not only are they important pollinators but the larva of many species also help to control aphids! Great places to spot hoverflies are in flowery meadows on flowers such as knapweed, buttercup, hogweed or yarrow or in gardens on plants such as Canadian goldenrod, hebe or buddleia. Quite a few species are instantly recognisable while the appearance of some other species might make you doubt that it is even a hoverfly… Mimicry Many hoverfly species are excellent mimics of bees and wasps, imitating not only their colouring, but also often their shape and behaviour. Sometimes they do this to fool the bees and wasps so they can enter their nests to lay their eggs. Most species however are probably trying to fool potential predators into thinking that they are a hazardous species with a sting or foul taste, even though they are in fact harmless and perfectly edible. -

Radenkoviã University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Natural Sciences Department of Biology and Ecology, Trg Dositeja Obradoviãa 2, 21000 Novi Sad, Yugoslavia NEW DATA ON HOVERFLIES DIVERSITY (INSECTA: DIPTERA: SYRPHIDAE)ONTHE FRUŠKA GORA MOUNTAIN (SERBIA) ABSTRACT: The hoverflies fauna of the Fruška Gora Mountain is well known on account of long-term investigations conducted on the location (1956—2002). Previously, the list of hoverflies had included 203 species (Vujiã and Glumac, 1994). Based on new investigations, nomenclature changes and recently published data, the following results were obtained: three species have been recorded for the first time for southeastern Europe, one species for F.R. Yugoslavia and seven species for the Fruška Gora; seven previously publis- hed species have been replaced and seven excluded from the list of the hoverflies fauna of the Fruška Gora; 16 species with recently established junior synonyms and 12 species with new generic names have been noted. According to these results, the revised list of hoverfli- es of the Fruška Gora Mountain now consists of 210 species. KEY WORDS: Diptera, Syrphidae, hoverflies fauna, the Fruška Gora Mountain INTRODUCTION The Fruška Gora is a low mountain, like an island surrounded by the fla- tlands of the Vojvodina Province (Serbia). The valleys of the Fruška Gora Mountain and their adjoining slopes harbor meadows and grain fields, vine- yards and orchards. Dense deciduous forests cover its higher parts, above 300 meters. -

Shetland’s Hoverflies A PHOTOGRAPHIC IDENTIFICATION GUIDE Rebecca Nason Hoverflies are the most attractive group of flies! There are over 280 species of hoverfly in the UK but currently only around 40 recorded on the Shetland Islands and illustrated here. Although flight times vary, the majority of Shetland hoverflies can be seen between May and late September, out in the countryside or in more urban parks and gardens. Hoverflies are important pollinators and a crucial part of a healthy natural environment. The best places to look for them is on garden flowers or flower-filled ditches and verges in summer. They are sun- worshippers too, so when not busy feeding on flower nectar or enjoying ‘hovering’ in mid-air, they can often be seen perfectly still, basking on sunlit leaves. Most Shetland hoverflies can be identified with close inspection in the field and from photographs.Try to take as many close-up photographs as possible, including a side, top and front profile to aid key identification features. With a little effort and patience, most of these hoverflies can easily be recognised by their clear, often colourful, distinctive markings by even the most amateur of naturalists. A number of hoverflies have very different looking males and females so a good starting point is telling them apart. This is easily done as male hoverflies have eyes that join in the middle, females are clearly separated. Several of our hoverflies are black and yellow, resembling wasps, others are brown and furry like bumblebees or the honey bee. Indeed their shape and behaviour can also imitate wasps or bees. -
