DOCTOR WHO SERIES 10 EPISODE 1 "A Star In Her Eye" By Steven Moffat SHOOTING SCRIPT 16/06/2016 (SHOOTING BLOCK 1) DW10: EP 1 "A Star In Her Eye" by Steven Moffat - SHOOTING SCRIPT - 16/06/16 1 INT. THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE - DAY 1 - 16.00 1 The quietest opening we’ve ever had. We’re in a reasonably untidy office. Dust and books. Obviously academic. A university lecturer’s office. We hold this stationary shot - there’s a pleasing symmetry. There’s a door on the left of the screen, and a slightly open one on the right - like the two doors on a weather clock. Through the slightly open door we can see another, smaller room. In between the doors, there’s a desk, facing across the screen. Two empty chairs. The one in front of the closed door, is a simple, wooden chair. Facing it across the desk is an elegant swivel chair. Distantly, a bell chiming. We hear the chatter of distant voices - young people, chatting and laughing. Under that, the drone of traffic. Ordinary and still, for as long as we dare. Then: Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! It’s like the squeaking wheel on a supermarket trolley - and it’s getting closer. Now the closed door opens, revealing: Nardole. Much as we last saw him in The Husbands Of River Song. He steps into the room (always a squeak on his left leg) revealing: In the doorway, Bill. Young, female, cheeky as hell. Nardole stands clear of the door, gestures towards the wooden chair.

Once it was a mining facility. Then later its corridors rang with screams generated by grotesque military experiments. However when the Doctor and Mel arrive on a hostile alien world after detecting a Terror of the Sontarans signal, the base they find themselves in is almost deserted. But not for long. Soon the Doctor's old enemies, the Sontarans, have landed, and are searching for the remnants of their previous research team. Before long they uncover evidence of strange occurrences on the planet. Of madness and death. They are warriors bred for war, strong of spirit and unafraid of death. To fear the Terror of the Sontarans is an act of betrayal. Nothing holds terror for the Sontarans. DS : Alright thanks. I am standing up with the laptop on Terror of the Sontarans kitchen worktop, as oddly there's very good wifi reception here. And it stops me from dozing off when I'm writing JD : That would help certainly. I'm tempted to put that in the writers notes DS : Why not? DOCTOR WHO AND THE CREATION OF A NON-GENDERED HERO ARCHETYPE Alessandra J. Pelusi 85 Pages December 2014 This thesis investigates the ways in which the television program Doctor Who forges a new, non-gendered, hero archetype from the amalgamation of its main characters. In order to demonstrate how this is achieved, I begin with reviewing some of the significant and relevant characters that contribute to this. I then examine the ways in which female and male characters are represented in Doctor Who, including who they are, their relationship with the Doctor, and what major narrative roles they play. I follow this with a discussion of the significance of the companion, including their status as equal to the Doctor. From there, I explore the ways in which the program utilizes existing archetypes by subverting them and disrupting the status quo.

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Film & TV › Features Film Reviews TV Reviews Festivals TV Review: Doctor Who: ‘Last Christmas’ The Doctor meets Santa in what James Humpish thinks is one of the show’s best Christmas specials ever Sunday 28 December 2014 Rating: ★★★★★ This review contains spoilers It’s hard to do a review of Doctor Who’s ‘Last Christmas’ justice in any short space of time. It ended with all of my family asleep in the living room besides myself. I’m not sure if that said more about them or the episode, but I think this time I’m willing to claim the former. Seasonal offerings of Doctor Who always have a fine line to balance – are we to take it as an episode of Doctor Who or are we to take it as television to keep us entertained at Christmas? It doesn’t always gel well and until now, David Tennant’s first episode, ‘The Christmas Invasion’ was the only definitive ‘Doctor Who at Christmas’ I could subscribe to. It now has a partner in ‘Last Christmas’. After the Doctor got the better of the Master/Mistress and devastatingly parted ways with Clara after the best friends lied to each other about how their lives were going, the moment was ruined for me by Santa Claus turning up. Despite the show being about a 2,000-year-old alien who travels in time and space, I felt like the modern-day, Americanised version of Santa Claus appearing as though he was real meant that the show was jumping the shark, which, for what it is, would be quite an effort.

  • Doctor Who and the Politics of Casting Lorna Jowett, University
Doctor Who and the politics of casting Lorna Jowett, University of Northampton Abstract: This article argues that while long-running science fiction series Doctor Who (1963-89; 1996; 2005-) has started to address a lack of diversity in its casting, there are still significant imbalances. Characters appearing in single episodes are more likely to be colourblind cast than recurring and major characters, particularly the title character. This is problematic for the BBC as a public service broadcaster but is also indicative of larger inequalities in the television industry. Examining various examples of actors cast in Doctor Who, including Pearl Mackie who plays companion Bill Potts, the article argues that while steady progress is being made – in the series and in the industry – colourblind casting often comes into tension with commercial interests and more risk-averse decision-making. Keywords: colourblind casting, television industry, actors, inequality, diversity, race, LGBTQ+ 1 Doctor Who and the politics of casting Lorna Jowett The Britain I come from is the most successful, diverse, multicultural country on earth. But here’s my point: you wouldn’t know it if you turned on the TV. Too many of our creative decision-makers share the same background. They decide which stories get told, and those stories decide how Britain is viewed. (Idris Elba 2016) If anyone watches Bill and she makes them feel that there is more of a place for them then that’s fantastic. I remember not seeing people that looked like me on TV when I was little. My mum would shout: ‘Pearl! Come and see.
