The first Big Finish blending of "nu" and "classic" characters and it was done flawlessly. The Victorian setting seemed like a perfectly sensible place for Jago and Litefoot to bump into Strax and join forces. The amnesia which led Strax to mistake Jago and Litefoot for Jenny and Vastra was priceless, as was Ellie trying to explain it all to them, and coming up with a theory to get them out of it. The story itself was a nice blend of science fiction and horror whi This was thoroughly delightful! The story itself was a nice blend of science fiction and horror which Jago & Litefoot & Strax 1 - The Haunting perfectly with all the characters. It was nice to have a female villain, and Ellie taking a larger role, to balance out the three male main characters. But I think the thing that Richard did best for this was he made Strax useful! He wasn't there simply for the comic relief, but he also created a situation where Strax's particular talents and knowledge Jago & Litefoot & Strax 1 - The Haunting actually needed. It was great to have the comedy but also great to see Strax so much more well rounded. I thoroughly enjoyed this and can't recommend it highly enough! Jan 04, Gareth rated it it was amazing. The plot itself was interesting, not spectacular but allowed the characters space to really interact with each other and the other interesting characters around, not least Ellie and the Inspector. Interesting exposition at the end - wasn't for listener's benefit as was clear to us what was going on, but very much for other characters benefit, which I find unusual but not in bad way. Overall, a great, fun listen May 02, Paul Hasbrouck rated it it was amazing Shelves: radio-shows. In this adventure, someone or something, is stealing the brains from London's citizens. Hot on the trail is Professor Litefoothis companion, Henry Gordon Jago and in this stand alone, Strax, a alien warrior turned butler. There are bar fights, a haunted house, a destructive night at Jago's music hall and a lot of laughs. Big Jago & Litefoot & Strax 1 - The Haunting has successfully returned the In this adventure, someone or something, is stealing the brains from London's citizens. Big Finish has successfully returned them to Victorian London in over 11 audio adventures were they have battle, vampires, werewolves, time traveling assassins, horrible singing puppets, Queen Victoria and Jack the Ripper! Jun 02, Jamie Revell rated it it was amazing Shelves: audio-plays. This is one of those things that, in retrospect just seems so inevitable - at least once Big Finish finally gained the rights to use characters from the new series. It's a perfect blending of the modern series with the classic one, teaming Strax up temporarily with the Victorian investigators who had, by this point, featured in ten seasons plus a few specials of their own audio spin-off series. The plot concerns a haunted house that seems to be Jago & Litefoot & Strax 1 - The Haunting to a series of mysterious murders and would work perfectly well in any regular episode, despite the extra length. But, of course, the appeal of it is adding Strax into the mix, with his usual failure to understand humans and Victorian culture. He gets a lot of the best lines, but there are also a number of moments, especially in the second half, where his understanding of alien technology gives him an edge - and makes him more than a simple comedy foil. It's a one-off, with no connection to the rest of its series beyond the characters, Jago & Litefoot & Strax 1 - The Haunting probably wouldn't work as part of something longer, but for what it is, it's very enjoyable. Oct 31, Danny Welch rated it it was amazing. So I didn't know what I was going to listen to, to celebrate Halloween! But I decided to listen to this and wow what a cracker this was! Absolutely hailarious and more importantly very spooky and at times quite dark! One of the best audios I have listened to, it's scary, it's fun, it's funny and just down right brilliant! Dec 28, Derelict Space Sheep rated it really liked it Shelves: doctor-who. A lightweight but very funny adventure. Dec 29, Jennifer rated it liked it Shelves: audiobooksfictionread This was very sweet somehow, and bittersweet because it had potential to continue with the enlarged and very merry band of the spinoffs, but for the demise of a key actor. I do find Sontarans fascinating. Oct 05, Sara Habein rated it really liked it Shelves: audio. I don't know if the baddie was the greatest reveal ever, but this was still good. Anything involving Strax is quite funny, and I'm glad to see him paired with Jago and Litefoot. Makes sense, since they exist within the same time period on Earth. Feb 22, Richard Harrison rated it liked it. Great little story featuring Jago & Litefoot & Strax 1 - The Haunting London-based companions from old and new Who. Strax was a little overplayed but the story was amusing overall. Interesting how Victorian London and 70ss middle England are the two most invaded spots in all of time and space. May 17, Alan rated it liked it. A change in my commute meant more time on the bus and the train for the next few weeks, but I didn't think I'd complete this audio book in one day. Frankly, the main reason is that this book is really more of a novella, and I think Strax works best in small doses. For the non-Dr. Who fans out there Strax is a member of the warrior Sontaran race who owed the Doctor a favor. After fulfilling the favor, and seemingly died, Strax was resurrected and became a companion to the Silurian detective Madame A change in my commute meant more time on the bus and the train for the next few weeks, but I didn't think I'd complete this audio book in one day. After fulfilling the favor, and seemingly died, Strax was resurrected and became a companion to the Silurian detective Madame Vasta and her wife Jenny in Victorian London. Jango, a theater promoter, and Litefoot a professor and detective are from an original Big Finnish Dr. Who spin off series. Big Finnish decided a crossover could be fun and profitable is my thinking so a disoriented Strax ends up with Jango and Litefoot solving a typical Whovian problem alien infestation and threat to Earth. Fortunately the producer was able to get Dan Starkey the actor who has played Strax on television. Starkey brings all the lovable over enthusiasm that Strax has to solving problems. After all Strax is somoeone who believes in using a fragmentation grenade when a hammer would do. Short, light fun. An easy way to kill two hours on your commute. Once it was a mining facility. Then later its corridors rang with screams generated by grotesque military experiments. However when the Doctor and Mel arrive on a hostile alien world after detecting a Terror of the Sontarans signal, the base they find themselves in is almost deserted. But not for long. Soon the Doctor's old enemies, the Sontarans, have landed, and are searching for the remnants of their previous research team. Before long they uncover evidence of strange occurrences on the planet. Of madness and death. They are warriors bred for war, strong of spirit and unafraid of death. To fear the Terror of the Sontarans is an act of betrayal. Nothing holds terror for the Sontarans. DS : Alright thanks. I am standing up with the laptop on Terror of the Sontarans kitchen worktop, as oddly there's very good wifi reception here. And it stops me from dozing off when I'm writing JD : That would help certainly. I'm tempted to put that in the writers notes DS : Why not? Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Film & TV › Features Film Reviews TV Reviews Festivals TV Review: Doctor Who: ‘Last Christmas’ The Doctor meets Santa in what James Humpish thinks is one of the show’s best Christmas specials ever Sunday 28 December 2014 Rating: ★★★★★ This review contains spoilers It’s hard to do a review of Doctor Who’s ‘Last Christmas’ justice in any short space of time. It ended with all of my family asleep in the living room besides myself. I’m not sure if that said more about them or the episode, but I think this time I’m willing to claim the former. Seasonal offerings of Doctor Who always have a fine line to balance – are we to take it as an episode of Doctor Who or are we to take it as television to keep us entertained at Christmas? It doesn’t always gel well and until now, David Tennant’s first episode, ‘The Christmas Invasion’ was the only definitive ‘Doctor Who at Christmas’ I could subscribe to. It now has a partner in ‘Last Christmas’. After the Doctor got the better of the Master/Mistress and devastatingly parted ways with Clara after the best friends lied to each other about how their lives were going, the moment was ruined for me by Santa Claus turning up. Despite the show being about a 2,000-year-old alien who travels in time and space, I felt like the modern-day, Americanised version of Santa Claus appearing as though he was real meant that the show was jumping the shark, which, for what it is, would be quite an effort.

Five episodes in, the Doctor faced the Daleks, who would become his most long-standing foes, extraterres trials resembling big metal pepper pots with one plunger-like hand and a goal that doubled as their favorite word: "Exterminate!" When Hartnell's declining health forced him off the series, Who's writers introduced their concept of "regener ation," which allowed the Doctor, a member of a human-looking alien race called the Time Lords, to trans form into a different being. So in 1966, Hartnell's Doctor collapsed and woke up a newer, younger man, portrayed by mop-topped Patrick Troughton. "I remember realizing that somebody else was playing the Doctor and complaining to my dad that that wasn't the Doctor," recalls current executive producer Steven Moffat, who'd been watching the series since it began—when he was just 2 years old. Doctor Who and the Neo-Victorian Christmas Serial Tradition Lindsy Lawrence (University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, Arkansas, USA) Abstract: Christmas stories are a tradition in British serial literature, be it the annuals and special weekly and monthly magazines published in the nineteenth century or the Christmas- themed episodes of popular television serials today. Festival literature produces an ‘eerie’ sense of past, present, and future, and many of these productions evoke past traumas for narrative impact. For example, Christmas editions of Charles Dickens’s Household Words and All the Year Round provided readers with specially commissioned stories that explored past traumas in order to enable their characters to morally improve, to the betterment of themselves and society. The rebooted Doctor Who, in ‘The Next Doctor’ (2008), ‘A Christmas Carol’ (25 December 2010), and ‘The Snowmen’ (2012), has reinvented the Victorian Christmas serial both via narrative echoes and explicit use of neo-Victorian and steampunk visual designs. In so doing, these neo-Victorian TV specials critique some of the same social problems as Dickens did, commenting on greed and the concept of ‘Victorian values’ while also remediating the affective nature of Christmas stories to help people come to terms with past traumas. Keywords: All the Year Round, Christmas serials, Christmas specials, Russell T. Davies, Charles Dickens, Doctor Who, Household Words, Steven Moffat, Sherlock. ***** In the first new Doctor Who Christmas special, Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) explains to her much put-upon boyfriend, Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke), “You just forget about Christmas and things in the TARDIS. They don’t exist. You get sort of timeless” (Hawes and Davies 2005: 6:14-6:18).
