THAT MOMENT WHEN HEROES SHINED DEAN J. KEREIAKES, MD A DOCTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Convalescent Plasma Breakthrough Dean Kereiakes, MD, was the principal investigator of a convalescent plasma protocol that utilized antibodies of those who had recovered from COVID-19 to treat the sickest of patients with the disease. Partnering with David Oh, MD, of Hoxworth Blood Center, Dr. Kereiakes developed this treatment, and received FDA approval, in April, well before specific antiviral drugs were widely available for COVID-19. The protocol went on to be used by other major hospital systems in the region and saw success in turning around the conditions of those most afflicted. “There is no worse feeling than watching someone deteriorating in front of your eyes and feeling helpless and hopeless,” Dr. Kereiakes said. “We had to have something readily available. We needed to have at least one weapon to help make a difference in the care of patients.”

PATIENT EXPERIENCE

This year brought the world a curve ball with COVID-19. The community has faced unprecedented conditions, the shutdown of elective procedures, and an ever-changing environment. Through all these hurdles, TCH has continued to bring the best care to our patients and adapt to the pandemic by introducing new safety procedures, launching telemedicine options, standing up new testing centers, and continuously focusing on providing the best to our patients.

JERIMIAH DODD’ S STORY, J-VALVE FOR J-MAN Not long ago, 29-year-old resident of Pike County, Georgia — known as “J Man” — was dying from a congenital heart disease called aortic regurgitation. This condition makes the heart work two or three times as hard as normal. Refusing to give up hope, Jerimiah’s mother, Connie Dodd, discovered there was a revolutionary medical procedure that could help her son. The procedure surgically implants a device, called the J-Valve, designed specifically for patients who require Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) due to aortic regurgitation. As opposed to open-heart surgery, this J-Valve procedure includes a TAVR delivery system that the surgeon guides through the femoral artery, which is much less invasive. TAVR devices specific to aortic regurgitation are not yet approved by the FDA, requiring the Dodd family to navigate many obstacles to obtain authorization for Jeremiah’s surgery under the rules of compassionate use.

Jeremiah had the procedure in November 2019 and was discharged from the hospital within two days. At the time of his J-Valve surgical procedure, Jeremiah was the second patient in the U.S. to have a J-Valve replacement device for his heart, the first under age 55, and the first with Down Syndrome. “The fact that it saved him, and it can save others, is amazing,” said Connie. “But a lot of people don’t even know it exists because it’s not FDA approved yet.” She is hopeful the FDA will approve the J-Valve so other patients can benefit as Jeremiah has. 55 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

MIKE O’CONNOR’S STORY With the help of the experts at The Christ Hospital, hiking enthusiast, Mike O’Connor, was able to overcome his debilitating back injuries and start his goal of hiking the 2,650-mile-long Pacific Crest Trail. Mike has been setting big hiking goals for himself since adolescence, but over the years, he began experiencing ruptured discs in his back that would limit his passion.

In August 2017, Mike blew a disc that left him barely able to walk. He saw John Roberts, MD, a spine surgeon with The Christ Hospital Physicians, who had treated his previous back problems. Together, they decided surgery to remove the damaged disc was his best shot for relief and getting back to training for the trail.

Mike had outpatient surgery in October 2017, followed by rehabilitation, a focus on strengthening his core, and many months of training. Mike was able to set off on his first big hike in January of 2019, traveling an average of 15-20 miles per day. Now his back is stronger than ever—and he fully intends to finish the 1350 miles waiting for him on the Pacific Crest Trail. “Had it not been for Dr. Roberts and the people at Christ who fixed my back, I never would have made it this far,” says Mike.
