Go though Roseneath for about ½ mile then bear left off the B833 and 100m left again. Parkhead is 400m on the right. Situation Parkhead is a remarkable country house set in nearly 7 acres which include one of the most admired walled gardens in the . The property is thought to date from 1750 when it was most likely accommodation for the many gardeners and their families who provided fruit and vegetables for Rosneath Castle , the home of Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria. Extended by the well known architect Robert Mylne (1772-1796), the house and garden have been a labour of love for the present owners (one of whom is also an architect) since they bought Parkhead in 1970. The house has been largely rebuilt in this time and offers flexible family living and working accommodation over three levels. Externally it is a very distinctive, almost semi circular shape and the interior is no less interesting. Many of the internal architectural features, including some of the fireplaces, are not original but in fact reclaimed from a local Victorian mansion which was demolished. It is a quirky and fascinating home which is ideal for large families or those choosing to work from home. Description Double storm doors with vestibule lead to a reception hallway with wooden panelling to dado height. The reception hallway leads to the main hallway with double height ceiling and bifurcated staircase. The hallway leads to a study, cloakroom and drawing room. The drawing room has a brick tiled floor, multi fuel stove (18kw) and French doors leading directly onto the Italianate walled garden. Off the drawing room is the morning room and dining room. The morning room is a charming cosy room with an open fire with high output back boiler (6kw)which is set into a painted wooden Georgian fireplace. The dining room also has French doors onto the garden, a brick tiled floor and rare marble fireplace. From here is a home office, wine cellar and kitchen. The kitchen has units at wall mounted and counter levels and includes an induction hob. Off the kitchen is a back lobby which leads to a triple garage, workshop and laundry. Completing the accommodation on the ground floor is a handy wood and coal store.

Grounds The grounds of Parkhead are quite simply breathtaking, and the real jewel in the crown of this property. Unsurprisingly they have featured in newspapers and magazines since opening occasionally to the public. They comprise nearly 7 acres or thereby with policy woodland, parkland and one of the most highly regarded walled gardens in the United Kingdom. Adjacent to the walled garden is a further walled enclosure for fruit and vegetables. The present owners have worked tirelessly for many years to create one of the most exciting formal private gardens in . The fine topiary garden has been created entirely, and singlehandedly from scratch, with complete dedication to symmetry and precision. Inspiration came from great Scottish gardens and from French and Italian garden design, with formal gardens from Tuscany a particular passion for the owners. The piece de resistance of the grounds is the utterly unique 1.4 acre topiary walled garden in which three connecting yew circles form the main structure to the garden, in which shape and balance are key. Each circle is bisected by a horizontal path and planted in a different theme. Using a wonderful variety of box, fruit trees and all manner of plants, within each circle, there is a round pond and fountain at the centre. Beautiful throughout the year, spring sees a succession of daffodils, snake’s head fritillary and cowslips, with the colours changing through the seasons. Even in the depths of a Scottish winter, the architectural shapes of the frosted topiary are stunning, while in the autumn, the turning colours of the foliage in the borders are also a thing of beauty.
