olivine-rich intrusive is dominant in the westernmost part of the mountains. In the east, a small isolated outcrop consisted of sedimentary rocks in a sequence of about 50 m, containing a fossil Glosopteris flora of Permian age. All mountains were crossed by do- lerite sills and dykes. Astronomical observations of the sun and stars were made to get an exact location of the mountains; for elevation estimation, a series of pressure readings will be compared with contemporaneous ones from SANAE and Halley Bay. Measurements of the mag- netic field were also made. During work in the moun- tains, animal and plant life were observed, and some samples were taken. In January, the glaciologist travelled 70 km north to the ice shelf, where a snow pit was dug and core drillings were made in order to compare the condi- tions there to those at the main base. Facilitated by favorable conditions, the work was finished ahead of schedule. Owing to coarse sastrugi and soft snow, the LC-130 aircraft experienced difficulty in becoming airborne, but succeeded after climbing up a slope and taking off downhill. Sydney Midwinter 2003
Sydney Midwinter 2003 28 June 2003 Cello's Restaurant (in the Castlereagh Inn) once again played host to the Sydney Bash. NSW Council members decorated the Heritage-listed venue with pictures, paintings, posters and displays and with helium-filled balloons anchored to table weights. David Ellyard, as Master of Ceremonies, ran the entire event with pizazz and managed to keep us more or less in order (no easy task!). At the AGM the 2003-04 NSW Council was elected - Lucinda Coates (President), Paddy Butterworth, Col Christiansen, Camilla Colebatch (a new recruit!), David Ellyard, Catherine King, Kit Scally, Phil Silvestro, Richard Stephen (rejoining the flock after some time), Hilton Swan and Bob Taylor. There was some discussion on the topic of whether eligible but unfinancial members should be allowed to attend the NSW Midwinter dinners by paying an extra fee (say $10). Responses were noted and the matter will be taken up at the next NSW Branch Council meeting. The President extended a special welcome to the 18 members of the 36th ANARE to Mawson 1983, whose 20th reunion it was, to Club President John Gilles and to all who had travelled the miles to get here. We had expeditioners from all over NSW and from Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. A summary of the year's activities was given by the President; a precis follows: It was reported that the NSW Branch had forged a relationship with the Australian National Maritime Museum, inspired by their exhibition Antarctic Heroes: Triumph and Tragedy. Many lectures and films were run in conjunction with this, and ANARE Club members are now welcome to attend ANMM events at members prices. -

United States Antarctic Activities 2001-2002 This site fulfills the annual obligation of the United States of America as an Antarctic Treaty signatory to report its activities taking place in Antarctica. This portion details planned activities for July 2001 through June 2002. Modifications to these plans will be published elsewhere on this site upon conclusion of the 2001-2002 season. National Science Foundation Arlington, Virginia 22230 November 30, 2001 Information Exchange Under United States Antarctic Activities Articles III and VII(5) of the ANTARCTIC TREATY Introduction Organization and content of this site respond to articles III(1) and VII(5) of the Antarctic Treaty. Format is as prescribed in the Annex to Antarctic Treaty Recommendation VIII-6, as amended by Recommendation XIII-3. The National Science Foundation, an agency of the U.S. Government, manages and funds the United States Antarctic Program. This program comprises almost the totality of publicly supported U.S. antarctic activities—performed mainly by scientists (often in collaboration with scientists from other Antarctic Treaty nations) based at U.S. universities and other Federal agencies; operations performed by firms under contract to the Foundation; and military logistics by units of the Department of Defense. Activities such as tourism sponsored by private U.S. groups or individuals are included. In the past, some private U.S. groups have arranged their activities with groups in another Treaty nation; to the extent that these activities are known to NSF, they are included. Visits to U.S. Antarctic stations by non-governmental groups are described in Section XVI. This document is intended primarily for use as a Web-based file, but can be printed using the PDF option.
