WRITERS HAVE MORE CONTROL ON TELEVISION, MORE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE, THAT’S ALWAYS BEEN TRUE, AND THAT’S WHAT SETS IT APART.” - JAMES L. BROOKS PITCH COMPETITION PRESENTED WITH FINAL DRAFT, INC. ATX Television Festival and Final Draft, Inc. partnered to create an invaluable opportunity for industry hopefuls to gain rare access to both TV creatives and Studio decision-makers. Contestants submitted pitches in the form of 90 second videos via YouTube that were viewed by a panel of industry judges who narrowed them to 10 finalists. They could pitch any type of show they wanted: a 1/2 hour drama for a traditional network, an hour drama for cable, a hybrid for original online content. The only guideline was that it be for a scripted (non-reality) series and pitched in under a minute and a half. Those 10 FINALISTS then pitched for 3 minutes LIVE at the festival, where judges chose one (1) winner. 306 VIDEO SUBMISSIONS were received and narrowed down to 25 SEMI-FINALISTS by a panel of screeners. 2015 JUDGES 2015 FINALISTS INCLUDED Kyle Killen Tegan Molloy 4 Drama, 5 Comedy, 1 Animated Keith Redmon Scott Pennington 4 Texas, 3 New York, 2 California, 2 Georgia, Dina Hillier Franklin Leonard 1 Maine, 1 New Jersey, 1 Vancouver Jenny Bicks 8 Males, 6 Females 6 Solo Pitchers, 4 were in pairs/groups. WINNER & PRIZE All 10 Finalists received badges to the festival and a copy of Final Draft. The winner received a mentor session with a Pitch Judge to help hone and develop her pitch, then the opportunity to pitch the finalized version to a Studio/Network partner of the festival. The 2015 WINNER (previously unsigned) signed with SYNCHRONICITY MANAGEMENT by the end of the weekend. 2015 SPECIAL EVENTS OPENING NIGHT launched the festival with a red carpet and world premiere screening of USA Network’s Complications followed by an exclusive Q&A with creator Matt Nix and cast members Jessica Szohr and Beth Riesgraf. The after party moved across the street to the rooftop of The Contemporary, where ATX, USA, Ciroc, Bulleit, and Shiner hosted guests as they ate, drank, and were merry in our branded Smilebooth photobooth. CLOSING NIGHT was hosted by ATX and Entertainment Weekly with the 15th Year Anniversary Reunion of Gilmore Girls, featuring Amy Sherman-Palladino, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop, and a total of 15 cast members at the historic Paramount Theatre, followed by an after-event at downtown Austin’s Cedar Door with music, premium food, a branded Smilebooth that put you into Stars Hollow, and beverages from Ciroc, Bulleit, and Shiner Beers. HASBRO STUDIOS PRESENTED SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS capturing the hearts of a room full of 400 pajama-clad kids (big and small) during this free family friendly event. ATX sponsor KIND Healthy Snacks served grain bars, Alamo Drafthouse served sugary nostalgic cereals, pancakes, and waffles, while My Little Pony, The Littlest Pet Shop, and Transformers: Robots in Disguise played. In between playing classic games like Jenga and Simon, coloring, and Play-Doh, families also were put in the cartoons with Smilebooth’s branded photobooth. THE INDUSTRY RECEPTION presented by Film Texas gave our panelists time to interact with each other and catch up with old friends at Hotel St. Cecilia. American School of Valencia Library MLA STYLE GUIDE FOR BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CITATIONS Used primarily for: Liberal Arts and Humanities. Some general things to know: MLA calls the list of bibliographical citations at the end of a paper the “Works Cited” page, and not a bibliography. Also, like APA, MLA style does not use bibliographical footnotes, favoring instead in-text citations. Footnotes and endnotes are only used for the purposes of authorial commentary. For full entries, titles of books are italicized*, and in-text citations tend to be as brief as possible. See some common examples below. If you don’t see an example that fits the kind of source you have, consult an MLA style guide in the Library, or ask the Librarian. Every line after the first is indented in the full citation. And remember, pay close attention to the examples. Punctuation is very important. * (This reflects a change made in 2009. All information provided in this document is based on the 7th edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, available in the Library) For all examples below, the information following “Works Cited:” is what goes into your Works Cited page. The information following “In-Text:” is what goes at the end of your sentence that includes a citation. A BOOK: Author’s last name, First name. Title of the book. City: Publisher, year. Medium (Print). (Example) Works Cited: Smith, John G. When citation is almost too much fun. Trenton: Nice People Publications, 2007. Print. In-Text: (Smith 13) or (13) *if it’s obvious in the sentence’s context that you’re talking about Smith+ or (Smith, Citation 9-13) [to differentiate from another book written by the same Smith in your Works Cited] [If a book has more than one author, invert the names of the first author, but keep the remaining author names as they are.

  • An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.
