B.O.C. 2016 136(1) New distributional information for the birds of Flores, Indonesia, including new localities for the Endangered Flores Scops Owl Otus alfredi by Andrew Hart Reeve & Samuel Rabenak Received 22 January 2015 Summary.—The Indonesian island of Flores hosts a remarkable avifauna that is both highly endemic and highly threatened. Nevertheless, basic knowledge of these birds is incomplete. Here we present new distributional information for 18 of the island’s bird species obtained during 2011; these include endemics such as Leaf Lorikeet Trichoglossus weberi and rarely recorded residents like Oriental Dwarf KingfisherCeyx erithaca. Our records of all Flores endemics are summarised, and we present new information on the habitat tolerance of two additional range-restricted species. Most significant is the discovery of the little-known and Endangered Flores Scops Owl Otus alfredi at three new localities in the hills of far-western Flores, more than doubling the known altitudinal range of this endemic, which was previously considered to be strictly montane. We report new information regarding the owl’s habitat preferences, vocalisations and sympatric occurrence with the other two Otus scops owls on Flores. Flores (08°S, 119–123°E; 13,500 km2) is a young volcanic island in the western Lesser Sundas of Indonesia, within the biogeographic region of Wallacea. Part of the Northern Nusa Tenggara Endemic Bird Area (Stattersfield et al. 1998), it hosts a large number of range-restricted bird species. Three occur only on Flores, with two others additionally occurring on the small nearby island of Rinca generally considered to be ‘Flores endemics’ as well. -

Report Numbre 01 Of 2014 FINAL REPORT EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROTECTION PARROTS ENDEMIC (White cockatoo, Chattering lory and Violet-necked lory) In North Halmahera, West Halmahera and Ternate City NORTH MALUKU PROVINCE KONSERVASI ALAM MALUKU UTARA FOREWORD Following and observing the growth in exploitation of biodiversity in North Maluku, and especially of Parrots, gives cause for concern that within 10 to 20 years, if there is no firm action by Government, it is not impossible that Parrots such as the White Cockatoo, Cacatua alba, Chattering Lory, Lorius garrulus and Violet-necked Lory, Eos squamata will suffer a drastic decline in population and that the threat of extinction will be ever greater. Konservasi Alam Maluku Utara (Nature Conservation North Maluku, KAMU) expresses our thanks to OBC for its continuing support for conservation in the Oriental region, including Indonesia, through the making of small grants to assist conservation actions by community groups and NGOs. In this case the grant has supported the continuation of on-going efforts for the conservation and protection of the region’s endemic and threatened Parrots. Our hope is that in future, the support of OBC can be continued so that the planned follow- up to the surveys reported here can be implemented. Our intention is that we can work step- by-step towards the resolution of conservation problems in Maluku Utara, and for this we need continued support from donors. Eight months, commencing as soon as funds are available 1.6 Cost of Project US$ 58,000 1.7 Project Summary Psitteuteles iris is endemic to the islands of Timor and Wetar in Indonesia, where its status is unknown, although it is thought to be scarce in part of its range. There are three subspecies: the nominate (P. iris iris) confined to West Timor; P. iris rubripileum in eastern Timor and P. iris wetterensis on Wetar. A population of 10,000 was estimated in 1993, based on anecdotal field information, and is regarded as possibly declining. Under the new IUCN Red List criteria, Psitteuteles iris is considered to be vulnerable. Psitteuteles iris was reported to be the least common of the three species of lorikeets occurring on Timor, where recent observations suggest that it is scarce. Its status on Wetar is unknown. It was observed there in the vicinity of a village in 1990, but no ornithologists have visited the island recently. International concern for the P. iris arose as a consequence of the paucity of information about its status; the setting of quotas with no biological basis and the international trade reported to CITES. -

VOL. 17 (2) JUNE 1997 61 AUSTRALIAN BIRD WATCHER 1997, 17, 61-70 The Juvenile Food-begging Calls and Associated Behaviour in the Lorikeets by JOHN COURTNEY, 'Ashgrove', Swan Vale, via Glen Innes, N.S.W. 2370 Summary The juvenile food-begging calls of representative species of eight of the 11 genera of lorikeets were studied and compared with those of other Australian parrots and cockatoos. The food-begging call of most species is a uniform repeated hissing note. The calls of two genera, Charmosyna and Vini (incorporating Phigys), are a repeated tremulous trill. On the basis of their trilling food-begging calls, it is suggested that the Psittaculirostris fig-parrots may be related to Charmosyna and Vini. Introduction The present paper, on the juvenile food-begging calls and begging postures of the lorikeets, is a continuation of a study covering these aspects in all groups of Australian parrots and cockatoos (Courtney 1996, 1997). The methods used and a discussion of food-begging calls were outlined in those papers. It is emphasised that the project, for all parrot groups studied, is simply a survey and qualitative description of these calls. Where differences in these calls between species or groups have been great or, conversely, where similarities have been undeniable even without statistical analysis, taxonomic conclusions have been drawn where appropriate. The lorikeets are a large assemblage of parrots, with 55 species in 11 genera, which occur widely through the Australasian Region and east into Polynesia, with one species extending north to the Philippines (Forshaw 1978). Six species in three genera occur in mainland Australia (Christidis & Boles 1994).
