History of Royal Cromer Golf Club Established 1888
History of Royal Cromer Golf Club established 1888 Information obtained from minute books, letters, members records, journals and periodicals. Royal Cromer Golf Club History Established 1888 Royal Cromer Golf Club owes its existence to the enthusiasm and love of the game of a Mr. Henry Broadhurst M.P., a Scot who lived at 19, Buckingham Street, The Strand, London. In the 1880's, whilst holidaying in Cromer, he recognised the potential of land to the seaward of the Lighthouse as a possible site for a Links Course. The popularity of North Norfolk at this time had been noted in the London City Press in a report dated 5th September 1886: "The public are greatly indebted to railway enterprise for the opening up of the East Coast. More bracing air and delightful sands are not to be found in any part of England. The only drawback is that the country is rather flat. This remark, however, does not apply to Cromer, which bids fair to become the most popular watering place, it being entirely free from objectionable features". The site of the proposed golf course was owned by the then Lord Suffield KCB, who kindly consented to the request of Broadhurst and some twenty other enthusiasts to rent the land. The Club was instituted in the Autumn of 1887 with Lord Suffield as President. Doubtless it was his friendship and influence with the Prince of Wales which precipitated the Prince's gracious patronage of the infant club on 25th December 1887. Thus Cromer had a Royal Golf Club even before its official opening the following January. -
The Dr. Alister Mackenzie Chronology (2018)
The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology th The 20 Revision October 2018 The MacKenzie Chronology Project The Project In the late 1990’s Nick Leefe and Bob Beck launched an effort to document the physical presence and movements of the great architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. That effort sparked club secretaries, historians, architects, professional writers, enthusiasts – in short, a global community of MacKenzie admirers – to share their knowledge. This, the 20th Revision of “The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology,” is the latest product of that collective and continuing generosity, and once again expands upon the previous revision. Why are MacKenzie’s whereabouts important? A timeline establishes a foundation of fact. Upon this foundation researchers can build their narratives of history. Without this fact base, large gaps in time appear, and speculation is the all too-common and unfortunate result - the quality of scholarship is impoverished. The ramifications can be significant - original design features and perhaps entire courses disappear or suffer disfiguration, writings are misunderstood or misinterpreted, attributions are missed or made improperly. As readers, as golfers, and as caretakers of the game of golf, we suffer. 2015 NEW ENGLAND PGA SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER INFORMATION PACKET CONCORD COUNTRY CLUB NASHAWTUC COUNTRY CLUB AUGUST 17-19, 2015 PRESENTED BY SUPPORTED BY 95TH NEPGA SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP Concord Country Club ♦ Nashawtuc Country Club August 17-19, 2015 LETTER FROM DAVE POPLYK Dear Fellow NEPGA Professionals, Welcome to Concord Country Club and the 95th playing of the New England PGA Section Championship. Concord Country Club has a history as rich as the town it sits in, and we look forward to adding another chapter to the history of our club. The club was initially founded in 1795 by nearly 19 members of the community and first built a clay tennis court in 1900. It hired golf course architect Donald Ross to design the first nine holes in 1913, and later constructed a swimming pool by damming a brook near the seventh hole in 2015, which can still be seen today. Now, the course boasts 18 championship holes that play at roughly 6,700 yards and reminds players of a vintage Ross design. The last time the Section Championship was contested at Concord, Chip Johnson defeated Kirk Hanefeld in a playoff to deny him of three Section Championship wins in a row. We anticipate our course will provide another exciting finish this time around. Along with the entire Concord CC staff, I would like to wish all competitors great success in this year’s New England PGA Section Championship. Enjoy your time in Concord. All the best, David Poplyk, PGA Head Golf Professional Concord Country Club 95TH NEPGA SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP Concord Country Club ♦ Nashawtuc Country Club August 17-19, 2015 LETTER FROM CHRIS CARPENTER 95TH NEPGA SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP Concord Country Club ♦ Nashawtuc Country Club August 17-19, 2015 LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear New England PGA Professional, Thank you for participating in the 2015 NEPGA Championship/PNC. -
