That's what Disney execs Michael Eisner and Frank Wells are saying these days as they watch THE WEEK Queen's 16-year-old classic, "Bohemian Rhap- sody," shoot up the charts on the strength off the phenomenal box-office smash, "Wayne's World." Insiders called Hollywood Records president Peter Paterno a lunatic when he spent multi-millions for the entire Queen catalog two years ago. With the LP "Classic Queen" heading for pure platinum, who's laughing now? He's the author of the now-legendary eight-page memo that gave us such bits o' biz savvy as "Any artist worth getting involved with must have good songs and an attitude. Whether an artist is black, white, R&B, rap or pop, Iwant them to have an edge... an attitudinal departure from their genre." Paterno is atrue rocker at heart. He can often be seen in ametal T-shirt at gigs around town, hobnobbing with the fans, supporting the music he loves. As aformer partner in the law firm Manatt, Phelps, Rothenberg and Phillips, Peter's clients included Guns N' Roses, Metallice, Rick Rubin and Dokken. He's taken a lot of shots since starting Hollywood, but with hard-hitting talent like Motorpsycho, the Scream (their stellar debut LP will no doubt become an instant classic when lead singer John Corabi officially departs for Motley Crüe) and T. I'm humbled by the royal ambassador treatment afforded me by the kind folks at MCA this weekend in Detroit. The event: Neal Schon's Hardline in their first live performance FRIEND anywhere, opening for the mighty VH. Schon and Hagar's longtime friendship apparently got them the brief (three gigs), but coveted, opening slot, and they were most impressive in front of the 40,000 who attended the Michigan shows. There's some great rock on the LP, TO ALL and this mini-stint should send Hardline off in abig way. A footnote to the headliners: I hadn't seen Van Halen since the Monsters Tour in '88 and Isay with total conviction — they were pure magic! It was nice speaking to Ed Leffler again (finally). Isee now why he protects this band so passionately. They deserve their lofty pedestal.
