3 Resolution supporting the Golden State Warriors return to San Francisco. 4

5 WHEREAS, San Francisco is a world class city that should have top-notch sports

6 facilities and teams of every stripe; and 7 WHEREAS, First-rate sports teams and facilities are not only economic generators but

8 sources of pride for the entire community; and, 9 WHEREAS, The Golden State Warriors are a professional basketball team based in

10 Oakland, California and are part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference in the

11 National Basketball Association (NBA); and, 12 WHEREAS, The team was first established in 1946, as the Philadelphia Warriors, in

13 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the franchise won the championship in the inaugural

14 season of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the league that would eventually

15 become the National Basketball Association; and, 16 WHEREAS, In 1962, the franchise was relocated to San Francisco, California and 17 became known as the San Francisco Warriors until 1971, when its namewas changed to the

18 current Golden State Warriors; and,

19 WHEREAS, The team has played all of its home games in the Oracle Arena since

20 1966, with the exception of a one-year hiatus; and, 21 WHEREAS, Along with their inaugural championship win in the 1946-1947 season, the 22 Warriors have won two others in the team's history, including another in Philadelphia after the

23 1955-56 season, and one as Golden State after the 1974-75 season, making it tied for 6th in 24 the NBA in the number of championships; and, 25

2 the City and County of San Francisco; and,

3 WHEREAS, The Golden State Warriors inspired thousands in the Bay Area during 4 their "We Believe" era commencing in 2004, which became the Warriors' slogan; and,

5 WHEREAS, When owner Chris Cohan decided to sell his share, potential buyers 6 asked the San Francisco Giants about building a state-of-the art arena south of AT&T Park;

7 and,

8 WHEREAS, On July 15, 2010, owner Chris Cohan sold the Warriors franchise to Peter 9 Guber of Mandalay Entertainment and his partner Joe Lacob; and,

10 WHEREAS, A new arena in the City and County of San Francisco would be an

11 economic benefit not only for the Warriors but would also provide much needed infrastructure 12 for convention space and for live performers, providing auxiliary benefits to the City and

13 County of San Francisco; and,

14 WHEREAS, San Francisco is a nexus for public transit and accessible to Warriors fans 15 from all over the Bay Area; now, therefore, be it

16 RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco welcomes the opportunity to 17 work with the Warriors franchise; and, be it

18 FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco will work with all 19 relevant public and private agencies to bring the Golden State Warriors back to San
