I first examine how soccer globalized, moving from a local game developed in post-industrial England to its current status as a global sport. Using Appadurai’s scapes, I examine how soccer incorporates the geographic flow of people, money, media, technology, and ideology to create a globalized cultural form. After building the foundation of a global game, I examine the case of the English Premier League (EPL) to detail the ways in which globalization of soccer has resulted in a commercialized sporting form. After establishing the EPL as a global brand, I examine how the clubs were sold and adapted to the American market, particularly through the process of reverse corporate nationalism. The EPL is sold as something authentically British to appeal to American audiences who engage with the game as a global form. This theme is also evident in a key analytical component of this dissertation: a participant observation of a popular soccer-oriented sports bar in Washington D.C. I examine the ways in which fans engage with the global through their affiliation with global sport as enacted by their fandom and their reflections on it. I particularly highlight how fans are attempting to act and explain their actions in ways that are consistent with preconceived notions of fan authenticity, by enacting practices that then allow them to see themselves as connected to Europe, the UK and even specific cities and neighborhoods in various ways. Here fans are making connections with the global through acts of consumption, but also make meaning through those acts that situate them as cosmopolitans with hybrid identities. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes.

It looked much worse than was actually intended, and to be fair, it was Tottenham versus Arsenal at Highbury, not some Mickey Mouse game that didn’t matter [smiles]. Given the same situation now, I’d probably challenge the same way as I did then, although the funny thing about it was getting punished twice. As Charlie ran towards the ball I slid in to dispossess him, then ended up on the ground. Their physio ran over to me, landed on top and proceeded to punch me in the face.

We are a global service, offered in 190 countries with close to 180 million subscribers, of whom over 12 million are in the UK. 2. The UK is one of Netflix’s top three locations for production globally, along with the U.S. and Canada. In 2019 we invested over £400m1 here in local content, with over 50 different shows in production including co-productions with the public service broadcasters and in total over £500m in UK production - a third of all our production in Europe. We expect our investment here to continue growing; our long-term commitment to the UK creative community and our intention to increase our investment in production is also reflected in our announcement last year that we are creating a dedicated production hub in the UK, based at Shepperton Studios.2 3. Localised content is increasingly a priority for our business, both in the UK and around the world. Since the end of European imperialism, the English football club has been quietly colonising the minds of spectators everywhere, introducing them to cultural forms that had once been unique to England. Now a global phenomenon, the North London club has an estimated 113 million fans worldwide. Using Benedict Anderson’s concept of “imagined community,” I analyse the conditions that have enabled fans from Lagos to Los Angeles, and from Beijing to Bangalore, to identify with a sporting institution based in a country they may have never visited. To explore the paradoxes of this long- distance relationship, this article analyses information about Arsenal that appeared in newspapers, blogs, and social media websites from 2004 to 2014. The study concludes that, with the advent of digital technologies, Arsenal is simultaneously embedded in English culture and accessible to the millions of fans living in the interminable spaces beyond its country’s borders. In an age marked by constant social and technological change, fans find in the football club a universal community capable of contributing to their sense of ontological security.
