The Very Beginning (written with great honor by cousin Basilio Chen 鄭/郑华树) The Roots Chang Kee traces his family roots as the 87th descendant of Duke Huan of Zheng (鄭桓公), thus posthumorously, Dr. Holt Cheng is referred to in the ancient family genealogical tradition Duke Holt Cheng, descendant of the royal family Zhou (周) from the Western Zhou Dynasty. The roots and family history of Chang Kee starts over 2,800 years ago in the Zhou Dynasty (周朝) when King Xuan (周宣王, 841 BC - 781 BC), the eleventh King of the Zhou Dynasty, made his younger brother Ji You (姬友, 806 BC-771 BC) the Duke of Zheng, establishing what would be the last bastion of Western Zhou (西周朝) and at the same time establishing the first person to adopt the surname Zheng (also Romanized as Cheng in Wades-Giles Dictionary of Pronunciation). The surname Zheng (鄭) which means "serious" or " solemn", is also unique in that is the only few surname that also has a City-State name associated it, Zhengzhou city (鄭國 or鄭州in modern times). Thus, the State of Zheng (鄭國) was officially established by the first Zheng (鄭,) Duke Huan of Zheng (鄭桓公), in 806 BC as a city-state in the middle of ancient China, modern Henan Province. Its ruling house had the surname Ji (姬), making them a branch of the Zhou royal house, and were given the rank of bo (伯,爵), corresponding roughly to an earl. Later, this branch adopted officially the surname Zheng (鄭) and thus Ji You (or Earl Ji You, as it would refer to in royal title) was known posthumously as Duke Huan of Zheng (鄭桓公) becoming the first person to adopt the family surname of Zheng (鄭), Chang Kee’s family name in Chinese. -

At the beginning of the 21th century, Professors Chen Fukang, Zhang Fugui and Tang Yize began a series of discussions on the naming of modern Chinese literature. Over the past decade, with the promoting of many scholars, such as Zhang Zhongliang, Li Yi, Ding Fan, Zhang Tangqi, and other scholars on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, the discussion and practice of the narration of the "literature of the Republic of China" and other aspects of the research methods have become more and more spectacular. The first edition of the book "the Republic of China" as a method was published by the Shandong Publishing House of Literature and Art in 2015 is a book with the most methodological meaning in the history and culture of the Republic of China and the study of modern Chinese literature. It is also a centralized and comprehensive interpretation of the concept of "the Republic literature". 1. The Construction of the Historical View of "Republic Literature" and Academic Breakthrough Separated from the concepts of "New Literature", "Modern/Contemporary Literature" and "Chinese literature in 21th Century" in the history of Chinese literature, the historical view of "the Republic of China" is not an abstract theoretical generalization, but a reduction and touch of the concrete "National Historical Modality". The study of the "literature of the Republic of China" is based on the full familiarity and mastery of the historical materials of literature, and also based on the experience of "temperature" for the complexity and richness of the literary subjectivity. -

So draft. Much rough. Such comments, yes. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the United States to a goal of “before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.”1 Between 1969 and 1972, the Apollo project landed six manned spacecraft on the lunar surface, but in 1972 President Richard Nixon terminated the program and significantly rolled back the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) budget. In 1405, the Yongle emperor of the Ming Dynasty, authorized the first of several massive naval expeditions from China to the Indian Ocean. After a final voyage under the Xuande emperor in 1433, the expeditions ended forever. These two projects remain linked in the popular imagination. For advocates of space exploration, the Zheng He treasure fleets stand as a cautionary tale of what happens to a great power when it stops exploration of the frontier.2 The fate of the Chinese treasure fleets also figures as a trope for anti-isolationists: for them, the end of the expeditions serves as a marker for the Ming Dynasty’s inward turn, which they see as resulting in China’s eventual ‘century of humiliation’ at the hands of more adventuresome western powers.3 But beyond these rhetorical invocations, what implications does the comparison between the two projects entail for the study of international relations? We argue that they shed light on the politics of international hierarchy. -

James P. Ward Prices of Weapons and Munitions in Early Sixteenth Century Holland during the Guelders War1 1. Introduction The adage that to have peace one has to prepare for war may not be of Classical antiquity but the principle was known to Livy and the Ancients,2 and so the influence of the weapons industry on world peace and economy hardly needs to be emphasized now. The purpose of this article is both to present data on retail prices of individual weapons and munitions of war in the first decades of the sixteenth century in Holland, and to show how the magistrates there prepared to defend their cities against an aggressor by purchasing weapons to arm the citizens. Prices quoted here for strategic commodities of war in the early sixteenth century complement those given by Posthumus in his survey of prices for the later sixteenth century and beyond.3 Kuypers published inventories of weapons maintained in castles and elsewhere in Holland and the Netherlands in the first half of the sixteenth century, but the cities of Holland were not included in his descriptions.4 A recent study by De Jong reveals the growth of the early modern weapons industry in the Republic of the United Netherlands in the period 1585-1621 as part of a process of state formation based on entrepreneurship, economic growth and military reform.5 As sources for the present investigation accounts of the Treasurer for North-Holland at The Hague, and of the city treasurers of Haarlem, Leiden, Dordrecht and Gouda were examined for expenditures on weapons and munitions. -

Gunpowder technology also spread to naval warfare and in Song decreed that all warships were to be fitted with trebuchets for hurling gunpowder bombs. They had bam-boo rods, a rocket-body lashed to the rod, and iron points. What happened? One of the first, if not the first of these weapons was the fire arrow. Interestingly, Andrade doesn't attribute discipline and drill among those innovations. February 4, The other was the 'flame-spouting lance' t'u huo ch'iang. Introduction On a cold December night in Quedlinburg, Germany, in 1589, thirty-two women were burnt at the stake, accused of possessing mysterious powers that enabled them to perform evil deeds. Thousands of people were similarly persecuted between the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries.1 However, this event was not unique, as fifty years earlier on a rainy night in August, 1549, ninety-seven maritime merchants were beheaded on the coast of Zhejiang 浙江 province for violation of the Ming maritime prohibition. In addition, 117,000 coastal people were immediately ban- ished from their homes to prevent them from going to sea. Thousands of Chinese and foreign merchants lost their lives in the subsequent military campaigns in support of the maritime interdiction. 2 If historians were asked to list the early modern phenomena that have most „disturbed‟ their academic rationale, the two centuries-long witch-hunt in early modern Europe (1500–1700) and the 200 year term of the maritime prohibition, or “hajin 海禁” (1372–1568), during the Ming dynasty (1368––1644) would probably be near the top of the list. For the past few centuries, scholars have debated vigorously the two phenomena and tried to iden- tify the factors that led to their formation, maintenance and eventual change. While the study of the witch-hunt has generated a degree of consensus, there are still many questions surrounding the Ming maritime prohibition. The maritime prohibition policy, introduced in 1371 by the newly enthroned Ming founder, the Hongwu Emperor 洪武 (r. 1368–1398), was institutionalised to maintain systematic control over foreign contact and foreign trade relations. -
