Formed in 2004 by The Ganjas Samuel Maqueira and Aldo Benincasa, the forthcoming record will be their third release. Drawing on influences like the Flamin’ Groovies, Iggy Pop and James Williamson‘s Kill City LP, as well as Dogs d’amour, Calling Lucifer contains the aforementioned Jacobites’ cover and a version of the Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers‘ track “It’s Not Enough.” View embedded content here Reprobate Media · The Versions - Fortune Of Fame “Fortune of Fame”is one of those minor, forgotten classics. Nikki Sudden had formed Swell Maps with his brother Epic Soundtracks back in the early ’70s, and their noisy DIY sound and spirit would go on to have a significant influence on post-punk and the following generations of alternative music. After disbanding in the early ’80s, Nikki Sudden joined forces with Dave Kusworth to form The Jacobites. “Fortune of Fame” is off the group’s first LP, Robespierre’s Velvet Basement (Glass Records). Brimming with urban despair but defiant in the face of it, the cut is perfect territory for The Versions to show off their own brand of rock and roll attitude. The Versions will be featured at this year’s Monkey Week Festival in Spain. -

Irish-American, and of partial Cherokee Indian ancestry, with the distinction of having been kissed by Elvis at age one, Fullman studied sculpture at the Kansas City Art Institute before heading to New York in the early nineteen-eighties. In Kansas City she created and performed an amplified metal sound-producing skirt and wrote art-songs which she recorded in New York for a small cassette label. In 1981, at her studio in Brooklyn she began developing her life-work, the 70 foot (21 meter) “Long String Instrument”, in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings, producing a chorus of minimal organ-like overtones which has been compared to the experience of standing inside an enormous grand piano. Fullman, subsequently based in Austin, Texas; Seattle, Washington and now Berkeley, California has recorded extensively with this unusual instrument (with recordings on New Albion and Niblock’s XI label among others) and has recently collaborated with such luminary figures as the Kronos Quartet and with cellist Frances-Marie Uitti. In 2000, Fullman received a grant to live and work in Berlin for one year. -

Accidents, chance, fate and the elusive quest to make sense out of tragedy underpin director Jennifer Baichwal’s (Manufactured Landscapes) captivating new work, an elegant cinematic meditation on the metaphysical effects of being struck by lightning. To explore these profound questions, Baichwal sought out riveting personal stories from around the world—from a former CIA assassin and a French storm chas- er, to writer Paul Auster and improvisational musician Fred Frith. The philosophical anchor of the film, Auster was caught in a terrifying and deadly storm as a teenager, and it has deeply affected both his life and art: “It opened up a whole realm of speculation that I’ve continued to live with ever since.” In his doctor brother’s laboratory, Frith experiments with his guitar to demonstrate the ubiquity of electricity in our bodies and the universe. Visually dazzling and aurally seductive, Act of God singularly captures the harsh beauty of the skies and the lives of those who have been forever touched by their fury. DIRECTOR’S NOTES I studied philosophy and theology before turning to documentary and, in some ways, the questions I was drawn to then are the ones I still grapple with now, although in a different context. Two of these, which specifically inform this film, are the relationship between meaning and randomness and the classical problem of evil. -

The Syndicate for the New Arts presents triple bill at the Bop Stop April 9 by Mike Telin On Saturday, April 9 at 8:00 pm at the Bop Stop, The Syndicate for the New Arts will continue their season with a triple bill evening that highlights the diversity of today’s contemporary classical music scene. The evening will kick off with Costa Ricaborn composer Julio Zúñiga’s 24 (2014) performed by Syndicate members Ben Rempel (percussion), Caitlin Mehrtens (harp), and Austin Lewellen (contrabass). The Syndicate set will also include Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Particles (2007) — a duo for harp and percussion performed by Rempel and Mehrtens. The evening will continue with the duo Patchwork, Noa Even (saxophone) and Stephen Klunk (drum set), performing Axamer Folio (2015), a new commissioned work by pianist, composer, educator, and former Ohio resident Eric Wubbels. In his composer notes Wubbels explains that Axamer Folio is “a modular network of 25 pieces for saxophone and drum set, with no preset order, form, or duration. The individual pieces (which include duos, solos, and duos that can be separated and combined with other pieces) project a small number of musical objects in an extremely diverse range of performative and notational contexts, from rigorously specified to indeterminate, graphic, and text scores; from tightly synchronized duo music to phasing loops, list structures, and free improvisation.” The duo’s set will also include Cincinnatibased composer Nate May’s Fun With Teeth (2015), which the composer describes as “death metal wrapped in a pink ribbon.” The evening’s third set will feature trumpet player and improviser/composer Peter Evans performing a solo set of improvised music that defies categorization.
