  • The Vocation of the Missionary
    E. Teodore Bachmann : Te Vocation of the Missionary | 209 Te Vocation of the Missionary E. Teodore Bachmann Pacifc Lutheran Teological Seminary Berkeley, California For one who has not himself had the distinction of serving overseas as a foreign missionary, and who has only had the privilege of living for a time amid the fruits of other men’s labors in the land from which the frst missionaries were sent forth, it may be presumptive to say something about the vocation of the missionary. When, however, I had accepted the invitation of our extremely able and persuasive president, Dr. R. Pierce Beaver, in which he laid stress on placing the missionary’s calling in its appropriate theological context, I knew I was in for a rough assignment. At times this presentation may appear theoretical. If it does, I hope it will not appear artifcial. For you, too, may recall the character in Tackeray’s Yellow Plush Papers who accepted an assignment on “Chinese Philosophy.” Indeed, he did so unfinchingly, simply blending into an essay two articles from the encyclopedia: the one on “China,” and the other on “Philosophy.” In approaching the vocation of the missionary, I was assured by discerning friends that not much had been written on the subject in recent years. Tere was, of course, plenty of material on recruitment; also excellent statements on the characteristics of the missionary. Te importance of vital Christian experience was everywhere recognized. Tere were glowing accounts of the missionary vocation of the whole Church, and of the duty of each believer to be a missionary.

Lutheran Missionaries, Landmarks and Legacies Gettysburg, PA, USA to Guntur, AP, India By Syam S. Pilli, Virginia, USA Prologue: India’s first church was founded in 52 A.D. by Apostle Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. As commissioned by the Lord, the doubting Thomas became a fervent missionary and preached gospel throughout Malabar Coast. He died as martyr in 72 A.D. and was buried in a tomb near Chennai. Though Christianity was established in 52 A.D., the Christian movement throughout the rest of India was propagated only after the arrival of the European and North American missionaries in the 16th century. Saint Francis Xavier, a Roman Catholic missionary commenced the great missionary work in 1542. The First Protestant missionaries Bartholomew Ziegenbalg and Pluetschau arrived in Tranquebar in July, 1706 and worked extensively by translating and printing the first Indian Bible in Tamil in 1714. William Carey, the father of modern missions arrived in Calcutta in November, 1793 and greatly influenced the missionary movement in India. Christianity in the Telugu land is the result of several foreign missions. The following table provides the details of the foreign missions in Telugu region until the arrival of American Lutheran Mission.
