Differentiated Facilitation Activity

Learning Goals or Standards to be addressed: Math

What kind of differentiation best meets their Learning Profile? • As my Learner has a very strong visual processing ability I have designed “NASCARDS”, a math based board game that the Learner and other players learn by using game tokens to race around a diamond shape NASCAR track. The game is split up into tracks of the four base mathematic operations Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division questions to reach the finish line (Checkered Flag).

Differentiation strategy (process, content, product) or Environment • Process : Using racing car shaped game tokens, Learner and additional players answering math questions centered on NASCAR racing facts/stats based on drivers poll positions (place in the start), car number, qualifying times and speed, races won and lost, the changing/replacing of tires and car parts, miles travelled during a race, or over a year etc. • Content : NASCAR numbers and facts. • Product : NASCAR themed board game. • Environment : Positive social and emotional interaction with peers.

How will the needs of students with disabilities be addressed?

• The richness of NASCAR and its decade’s long history give ample mathematical questions so the game is not quick to lose momentum, and as the opposing players in the game are like competing NASCAR drivers keep the Learner’s cognition engaged and in motion.

Describe the specific learning activities?

HOW TO PLAY

• Up to 6 players; each choosing a metal NASCAR game token. (Teams of two are allowed) • Starting at the green GO! Flag, each player rolls for who will go first by rolling the die, the highest player then moves the number they rolled and to the operation of their choice. The players rotate turns clockwise; the EA will read the questions. • Each operation is colour coded, as well as their stack of question cards (red for addition,

purple for division etc), and each set is placed on 1 of 4 ‘Pits’. At each stop they choose a

question card, and using the provided pads and pencils answer the math question (each operation has an answer sheet to each card that is labeled with a small number in the bottom right corner). • If the player answers the question right they move one space ahead, if they answer wrong they move one space back.

• If a player lands on a green ’Wild Car’ spot they can choose any one of the operation cards,

if they answer wrong there is no penalization, and the player stays where they are till their next turn.

• If a player lands on a ‘Wheel’ they can choose which operation to go to next and moving one

space forward and answer a question. • A player must roll the exact number to cross the ‘Checkered flag/Finish line’ (e.g. If the Red

car is 3 spaces from the ‘Checkered flag’ and they roll a 5 the player drives past the ‘ Checkered

flag ‘ and must keep moving to the number rolled.

• If a player lands on a space another player is already on, the previous player moves back one spot, letting the other car take their place and overtake them. • The game is not over until the first three players cross the ‘Checkered flag’ and each answer a

final question of their choice. If they are wrong they keep in place, till their next turn and answer another question. If the player answers three wrong questions they are to move back the number of letters in the colour of their game token and keep going.

How will you know if the support will “work”? (Informal assessment)

• Learner will answer varying math questions, his progress will be monitored for any difficulties if any with a specific operation, his auditory and writing comprehension when writing out the question, social behaviour.
