Unique Selling Points Lion Sands is the only private game reserve rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park • Lion Sands Kruger National Park is one of only seven private park concessions, and protects 5 000ha (12 500ac) of pristine wilderness, as well as sites of cultural and historical significance • Lion Sands is family owned and operated by the fourth-generation More Family – their grandfather was one of the founders of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve (Sabi Sand Wildtuin) established in 1948, and instilled a legacy of community and conservation • Lion Sands, fed by the perennial Sabie River, conserves an extraordinary abundance of wildlife, and its four luxury riverside lodges – Ivory, River, Tinga, and Narina – are ideally located for spotting animals coming down to the water to drink • All four lodges are within 12km (7mi) of Skukuza Airport • The reserve offers a unique programme of activities for guests to tailor-make their stay, including the iconic Treehouse experiences (Chalkley Treehouse, Kingston Treehouse, and Tinyeleti Treehouse)
About the Lodges Ivory Lodge: On the Sabi Sand side, the contemporary-style lodge is built of concrete, timber, glass, and steel to meld into the landscape. Its eight one-bedroom Villas and one two-bedroom family Fish Eagle Villa offer unparalleled luxury in peaceful refuge. Each has a private lounge, plunge pool, and viewing deck. Fish Eagle Villa, in addition, incorporates a private spa and gym, lap pool, firepit deck and star jetty, and comes with a butler, personal chef, field guide, and open safari vehicle.
River Lodge: On the Sabi Sand side, River offers a sophisticated interpretation of the traditional safari lodge, with an emphasis on clean lines, optimised natural light, and contemporary décor. This creates a feel of lived-in luxury, and guests are invited to make themselves at home. River Lodge comprises eight Luxury Rooms, six Superior Luxury Rooms, and four private River Suites further away from the main lodge – each with their own private plunge pool, and one with a second children’s bedroom. A shared guest pool is located off the main lodge area.
Tinga Lodge: On the Kruger Park side, the lodge is a contemporary take on the colonial-style homestead. It captures the romance of the pioneer days, but offers considerable more luxury in its bold and sophisticated spaces. Its nine Suites and one two-bedroom Hi’Nkweni Villa occupy private spots along the riverbank. Each has its own viewing deck and pool, in addition to the main lodge. Hi’Nkweni, being entirely self-contained, also comes with a butler, personal field guide, and open safari vehicle.
Narina Lodge: On the Kruger Park side, the lodge, perched on stilts amongst a canopy of 100-year-old trees, reflects its surrounds with organic chic décor, creating an air of relaxation. The main lodge connects, via raised wooden walkways, to nine separate Suites – each built to take advantage of the serene river views from its pool, deck, as well as bed and bath.
Pg 1 Location Lion Sands Ivory Lodge and River Lodge: Both lodges are located in the south of the private Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which protects 65 000ha (160 600ac) of, arguably, Africa’s most pristine Big Five territory. GPS co-ordinates: Ivory Lodge 24°58’24.1”S | 31°31’46.5”E; River Lodge 24°58’16.9”S | 31°31’55.4”E
Lion Sands Tinga Lodge and Narina Lodge: Situated in the south of the Kruger National Park which, covering nearly two million hectares, is home to more mammal species than any other game reserve on the continent. GPS co-ordinates: Narina Lodge 24°57’43.41”S | 31°33’46.51”E; Tinga Lodge 24°58’16.94”S | 31°35’0.54”E
Weather The average maximum temperatures range from 24°C/75°F in July to 33°C/90°F in January, with the lowest average minimum occurring in July at 8°C/46°F • The average annual rainfall is 350mm (14in), most of which occurs during midsummer (December – February) • Rain is usually in the form of thundershowers, where a downpour is experienced, very seldom lasting longer than a few hours
Best Time to Travel A year-round safari destination • The animals in Lion Sands Game Reserve are non-migratory, and variation in the safari experience is season-, rather than location-, related • The best period for birdwatching is from October to April

Mack & Madi Family Experience Inspired by Rob and Britt More’s first-hand understanding of travelling with their twins, Mack and Madi. More options and flexibility around accommodations, meals, and toddler-to-teen activities give children a little extra freedom to explore and just be kids – and make family travel child’s play.
Lion Sands’ tailor-made activities keep young guests occupied with the wonders of the natural world, as well as with sports and crafts, during their stays. Just some of the fun includes: family morning game drives; bush orientation; bug CSI; dung tracking; spoor casting; scavenger hunts; pool games; rock painting; beading; pizza making in the boma; cookie baking and cupcake decorating in the kitchen; and stargazing. Parents are welcome to join in, or sneak a few hours for themselves.
Access By air: We recommend guests fly with Airlink into Skukuza Airport (SZK). Complimentary transfers in open safari vehicles between this airport and our lodges are conducted by partners of Lion Sands Game Reserve.
By road: The driving time from Johannesburg to Lion Sands Game Reserve is approximately 4.5 to 5 hours. Should guests choose to drive, we recommend they stay over a night at any of the mountain or country lodges along the Panorama Route to ensure they arrive at us fresh the next morning and ready for a spectacular safari experience.
